(We'll top the group if we beat the Rossies by at least 13 points and Mayo win by 4 points less than we do, or something. But it'll be closer than that.)"
2nd or 3rd is the same as the semi final and final are neutral venues

Best of luck to the under 20s tonight, it would be a huge boost to the county to win tonight. Our record against Roscommon at all levels is terrible especially in the last decade or so , they need a win too I think so makes for a proper knock out championship match tonight. Hopefully weather stays dry and we have a big crowd in ballinamore the Lads will need it.

Leitrim can't top the group no matter how the results go tonight.

If Sligo beat Mayo or it finishes a draw and Leitrim win, then Galway have the head to head on Leitrim

If Mayo and Leitrim win this evening, this puts 3 teams tied on 5 points then it becomes a mini league between the 3 teams and only factors in points won in the games in the head to head games between the 3 teams, then it comes down to score difference between the 3 teams

As Galway, Mayo and Leitrim have already all played each other, we know the outcome of this mini league

Galway beat Leitrim
Mayo beat Galway
Leitrim beat Mayo

So all teams earned 2 points in head to head games, next it would come down to score difference in the head to head games only

Galway beat Leitrim by 9, lost to Mayo by 4 (+5)
Mayo beat Galway by 4, lost to Leitrim by 5 (-1)
Leitrim beat Mayo by 5, lost to Galway by 9 (-4)

If Sligo were to win tonight, then a draw would be enough for Leitrim, but if Mayo win or draw, then only a win for Leitrim would see them into Semi final

This new mini league system is a joke, it over complicates everything and makes it impossible for most supporters to follow. Best of luck this evening

You are being critical of one of the few positive things to be done by the Connacht council because you are afraid that people won't understand if the competition is close. Please give people a little more credit.

Best of luck to Leitrim this evening and hopefully we do the task.

If only the senior championship had these permutations and system. Then it might be worth saving.

Coach Moran must be in the zone tonight and carry us through to victory. Onwards for Leitrim.

Great to see how competitive Connacht is. An awful shame such a gap opens up at senior level and that is across all provinces. Radical measures and aid could be put put in place to raise the profile of smaller counties to narrow that gap, the GAA should look at that as being as crucial as their crusade to elevate Dublin GAA. We now have an expert group looking at rule changes to make the game a better spectacle, the best spectacle would be if senior was as competitive as u20.

Indeed smaller counties such as yourselves and us would benefit from this suggestion very much.

There's a great spread of winners and finalists in the u20 championship. Sligo, Roscommon, Offaly all in finals in recent years, not that long ago since Tipp and Cavan made finals. Now realistically senior will never get to the same level playing field as u20 but the gap could definitely be reduced. Not that long ago London, Longford, Leitrim, Westmeath could all bring some of the top teams close if not even turn them over. It is now hammerings the Div 1 teams are dishing out on the lower tier teams. A serious gap has opened up in the past 10 years.

Isn't it better that teams get more games than straight knockout? Leitrim have a chance to get to a semi final which perhaps might have passed them by with a tough knockout draw.

Thanks. I'm just after reading the mini-league thing in today's Observer, so I came over here to say I'm wrong. You'd think though that Connacht GAA would have placed that info on their website. In fact, on their page with details of the Round 4 fixtures, they've the picture of the league table after Round 3...

How is it a joke the lads on all 5 teams have gained valuable experience in playing each other once. In years gone by Sligo and Leitrim would play one game and be knocked out. That would mean they would be training for 5 months for possibly one game. New format is a brilliant idea and Leitrim will see the benefit of it down the line.

I think the gap is going to close in a few years time in Connacht. I don't think our performance at u20 this season will be a once off. Possibly though we aren't getting better and the usual big 4 in Connacht are falling behind the rest of the country and dropping down to our level.

I'm looking forward to see how our minors get on and if they can perform similarly to the u20's.

I think a few people are misinterpreting what I said

I am definite in favour of having group stage and getting more games for the young players to develop

The mini league I am referring to is the tie break situation when 3 or more teams are tied on points, they create a mini league using the 3 teams involved head to head games and ignore the other games to determine who goes through. The old system of the overall score difference across all games was much clearer

Clearer, but not necessarily fairer.

Consider the example that somebody posted in another thread about it:
- In Round 1, team A beats team D by a point.
- In Round 2, team B also beats team D by a point.
- All other games in the group are equally close until the final round, when D are already out. They just go through the motions against team C in fulfilling the fixture, and are hammered by 20 points.

Teams A, B and C finish level on points. In the games between them:
- Team A has beaten B and drawn with C
- Team B has also beaten C

So, which is fairer -
- Team A finishes top of the three by virtue of the best record in the games between the three (i.e. an extension of the head-to-head rule), or
- Team C finishes top of the three simply because they put a big score against an already-eliminated team, and despite the fact that they have the worst record in the games between the three?

Very early in the game here Roscommon look to have done their homework well on us. Pressing our lockout and not letting us out easily. Wasn't sure why the other teams we faced to date didn't try this already. Need a few long kickouts to shake it up.
