Harney and Ronan Daly going/gone overseas."
Thanks for the update Seanfanbocht. A real loss to see Daly and especially Harney go. Harney when fit is as good a midfielder as any. Unfortunately for him and Ros he was very injury prone and we could never really rely on his availability. Good to see O'Rourke and Connolly back. Hoping Keith Doyle can make one of the midfield positions his and Eddie Nolan most likely his partner. No doubt O'Rourke will provide plenty of competition

I note Conor Devanney's retirement today. No disrespect but I thought he had retired last year but obviously wasn't official and I knew he had a lot of injuries in recent seasons. I'd like to offer him my best wishes as he was a great servant to Roscommon down through the years from underage all the way to senior.

On the other side good to see Tadhg O Rourke and Cian Connolly back in the fold. I always felt TOR got a raw deal when we lost and was the scapegoat for a lot of others failings.

Harney and Ronan Daly gone travelling as well documented and has Niall Kilroy called it a day as well? Any word on how the serious injuries to Ciaran Murtagh and Cathal Heneghan are progressing.

I see our manager is getting a lot of press in the national media whether it's a case of new man on the block or he is friends with a lot of the media personnel. Not seeing as much from the new men in Donegal, Wicklow, Longford, Limerick, Westmeath even though most have higher profiles Hope things quieten down a bit when the action starts next week in fbd.

Some recent challenges saw Ross beat Cavan narrowly and a pre-christmas challenge saw Down beat us comprehensively if reports can be believed. Looked like Down have hit the ground running under Laverty. Ross play a Longford selection tomrrow night but it's hard to see how strong longford could be given they played a strong team last night v laois and are out again on Sunday. Would have liked Ross to play stronger opposition given we are 3 weeks out from Tyrone in league opener amd maybe they have unknownst to us.

Hard to get opposition when the other Provinces are playing group games outdoors on real pitches.

It's a pity the preseason FDB tournament falls victim to politics by being played in the Dome. Most fans I know love traveling to these matches after the season break but won't travel to the Dome. Hopefully, Roscommon can hit the ground running in the league or it could be a long year.

Agreed, ridiculous venue and gives no preparation for January conditions.

Definitely need to hit the ground running, personally think we'll need 4 points from our first 4 games v Tyrone, Galway, Armagh and Monaghan to give us a shot at staying up. Definitely anything less than 3 on the board going into Mayo in round 5 and we're under severe pressure.

Cathal Heneghan got a knee injury back in July he'll do well to see any game time in the NFL.

Ciaran Murtagh is nursing a foot injury and will likely miss the early rounds of the league. By all accounts we played very experimental line ups in recent challenges and simliar line up is expected v Sligo on Friday. Will be mid way through the league before we see where we are.

Getting fitness right and intensity in our play are hugely important for the upcoming NFL divsion 1 campaign. Galway and Tyrone will be fine tuned and ready for us and expecting wins from opening two games.

Best of luck to Conor Devaney, took a year out due to injuries and busy with family life and work but has now decided to hang the boots up. Was a pleasure to see him in action, talented with huge work rate and a gent off the field.

To stay up we'll need as a minimum to get wins in 2 of our 4 home games and 1 away win, most likely at Monaghan.

Interesting article in page 42 of todays Irish Independent by Martin Breheny. His top footballers who never won an All-Ireland senior title includes 3 former Roscommon footballers. The great Dermot Early is at 1, while Tony McManus is at 14 and Harry Keegan at 16. Delighted to see Paul Barden from Longford making the top twenty at 20.
His top 20 is:

1. Dermot Early (Roscommon)
2. Lee Keegan (Mayo)
3. Mickey Kearins (Sligo)
4. "Nudie" Hughes (Monaghan)
5. Glenn Ryan (Kildare)
6. Kevin O' Brien (Wicklow)
7. Eugene McKenna (Tyrone)
8. Declan Browne (Tipperary)
9. Joe Kernan (Armagh)
10. Mattie Forde (Wexford)
11. John Galvin (Limerick)
12. Paddy Moriarty (Armagh)
13. Peter McGinnity (Fermanagh)
14. Tony McManus (Roscommon)
15. Dessie Dolan (Westmeath)
16. Harry Keegan (Roscommon)
17. Liam Mc Hale (Mayo)
18. Keith Higgins (Mayo)
19. Noel Roche (Clare)

The breakdown is a follows: 3 Roscommon, 3 Mayo, 2 Armagh, and 1 each from Sligo, Monaghan, Kildare, Wicklow, Tyrone, Tipperary, Wexford, Limerick, Fermanagh, Westmeath and Clare.

Listmeister Breheny at it again!
He left out the greatest Rossie of them all - Gerry O'Malley.

In fairness to him, it was the best players over the last 50 years. (1973 -2023). I think Gerry played most of his football in the 50's & 60's. My original post did not mention that.

Yes the great Gerry O'Malley. Delighted to have had the pleasure of meeting him once. A true Roscommon legend. His biggest day was the All Ireland Final of 1962 but he came off injured. He was I think in his mid 30s by then. Great to see Dermot Earley top the list in the Independent. 3 Roscommon players in the 20 named and all 3 played in the 1980 All Ireland Final. The one that got away. Hard to believe that Lee Keegan retires having lost in 6 All Ireland Finals. Mayo have lost 11 senior All Ireland football finals since the 1980s. One hell of a record of losing.

Very interesting. Is 11 of the 2021 u20s?
Has Ruaidhrí Fallon given up the rugby?
He was a great prospect before he went down that road.

Has for now. Boost to Brigids also who have lost the Carthy and Murray brothers to rugby.

Yes 11 of 2021 U20s and another few are meant to be part of the 40 plus panel. Panel will be getting trimmed down before the national league so the opportunity for the younger lads to put their hand up.

Tadhg O'Rourke and Cian Connolly as well. Thought they'd play some part tonight but maybe they're injured also.

Enda and Ciaráin had injuries anyway.
Maybe some of the items work too far away and can't get a full day off work.
Maybe Mr Prenty might pay loss of earnings if this Friday indoor nonsense is to continue.

A win and into another FBD final. 7 point margin a bit harsh on Sligo although we kicked 10 wides with the 3-17 scored. Awful defensive showing 1st half major improvement required before div 1 action.

All ten subs got a run out with Adam McDermott impressing the most replacing Conor Cox who produced probably his worse match in the Roscommon jersey. Keith Doyle especially 2nd half was very good and why we won pulling up in the end,

Would agree with this. Roscommon started brightly but once Sligo got level after 10 mins or so they were the better team until the sending off. Our defense was very poor at times and Sligo just sliced through at their will. Diarmuid was excellent in the first half and Ben O'Carroll done well also. It really took the sending off for Sligo to allow us back into the game. It was just a matter of going through the motions from then on. Keith Doyle had an excellent game. Conor Cox must be lacking in confidence or something as it was his worst game for us. He hasn't played well since the season before last but last night was a horror show. He couldn't even kick the ball with distance. I hope he gets back to his former self as we all know what he is capable of. Overall it was a positive enough game with good showings from Diarmuid, Keith Doyle, Lavin did well in goal and O'Carroll was lively throughout. McDermott and Kennelly impressed when introduced. Big improvement needed though for next Fridays game and further improvement again for Tyrone the following Sunday. I'm really looking forward to the league and hoping we can play some really good entertaining football while also being able to retain Division 1 status. Ros Comáin abú
