Replying To TanCanRan: "It's hardly that big an achievement lads when we were a whole county against a segment of Kerry in the final." They had 2 squads same as other years . Other squad lost to Offaly in Pearse Park Longford

Replying To galway19: "Mountbellew a bit slow to start today but they were always comfortable. Ciaran Mulhern won't be far away from Galway squad next year. He looks the part at senior level. Barry McHugh is still easily the best free taker in Galway." Is 'points for' more significant than 'points difference' in sorting any 3or4way ties in these senior and intermediate championships? I see it's included in the galwaygaa tables anyway, and points difference is not.

Replying To smallfrank: "He was a selector in 19 when we were very strong and let an All Ireland slip but more importantly we brought through Johnny McGrath, Cian Hernon, Tomo Culhane and Daniel O'Flaherty to play senior" He was involved as selector with Donall O Fartharta for those 2 or 3 years from 2017 to 2019 where they they made it to couple of minor finals.

Replying To Joed1987: "Wat a strange post First you congratulate the team and then you are almost suprised because mb have 6 players on the team. 6 players who were part of the team who got to div 1 feile final last year and some of those players were part of the minor panel this year. Why does it always have to be the same team that have the county players each year? That's wat is holding the senior team back from wining all irelands. Always lookin at the same players from the same clubs. Never lookin outside the box. Big clubs don't always guarantee good players. It's just that they get seen much quicker because they are from a certain aera or parish" Times have changed and naming clubs and commenting on how many from clubs shows that someone hasn't a clue. Lots of savage work being done in clubs and schools every corner of the county. The one good thing about the academy system is and I can say this with confidence, every young lad is getting a chance

I still think Liam Costello is county standard. He has pace, power, work rate and can finish. He seems to deliver every day now for Milltown as well so not much more he can do.

Always lookin at the same players from the same clubs. Never lookin outside the box. Big clubs don't always guarantee good players. It's just that they get seen much quicker because they are from a certain aera or parish" Firstly, I'm not at all surprised that there's a strong MB group involved, in fact I'm delighted to see the diversity, and it's something that's badly needed. My original point was in reference to the list that appeared in the Tuam Hearld article, which hadn't included any players from Oranmore, S/K or Moycullen etc. Looking at the full squad now, we can see those clubs are indeed represented as suspected.
That said, I do agree with you it often feels like the same clubs are producing the county players year in, year out. If we take the U20s as an example Dunmore won the North Board U19 last year and only lost the County final by 4 points, yet just 1 player made the U20 squad. Meanwhile, 6 players from Corofin were included, despite the fact that they weren't able to match Dunmore at U19 level.
So the question is where does the issue lie? Is it that coaches aren't attending enough games outside the A grade? Or is there too much focus on the bigger, established clubs? Schools football also plays a role here, depending on location and grade, which can unfairly influence who gets spotted.
At the end of the day, if we want to develop stronger county teams, the net needs to be cast wider. Talent exists in every parish, it's just about giving those players the same chance to be seen.

Hard to believe that this is a problem in this day and age. Not rocket science to ring a representative of every club, and find out who their top players are at every level, and trial them out, or make sure to see them in some game. If you're a Galway manager at any level in either code, and you're not scoping the county for the top talent available to you, then you shouldn't be a Galway manager at any level in either code.
