Notwithstanding our weaknesses particularity our management i still fancy galway cos mayo are a very average outfit who still lack a half decent forward line. handpassking (Galway) - Posts: 438 - 22/04/2024 21:02:55 2539979 Link 0 |
I very seldom post here but I did at the beginning of the League this year when I felt that our senior team was heading in the wrong direction. (I mentioned then the keeper disaster, no pure midfielders and players being played out of position) Brandyh (Galway) - Posts: 25 - 22/04/2024 21:12:56 2539981 Link 1 |
By all known indicators the Connacht final against Mayo in two weeks will play out like all the big games we've had against them recently . Galway4ever (Galway) - Posts: 219 - 22/04/2024 21:34:10 2539988 Link 1 |
I see McStay on Twitter appealing to all Mayo supporters to come out on Connacht final day. I've been critical of the team & management over the last while but they need all the support they can get now. As supporters let's all do our bit and make sure we're in Pearse Stadium on Sunday week to roar them on. Likely to be a tight game and it might make the difference, we definitely owe them one at this stage. johnjoe21 (Galway) - Posts: 131 - 22/04/2024 23:24:44 2539998 Link 1 |

I never once questioned Padraic Joyce as a player he in my opinion was one of best players ever to play for galway smart player but as a manager poor ,,

A very average outfit who have outscored us in our last 3 meetings, and plenty more prior to that in the last 5 years. This talk about Mayo lacking a forward line, yet they were far more accurate than us when we played them earlier this year. We on the other hand have had a terrible conversion rate in many games, including last weekend. Of course we can beat them, but it will require a massive improvement from what we've seen so far this year. They found it much easier to work better scoring chances against Roscommon on Sunday, while the Rossies were forcing shots from tricky positions. It's stating the obvious and I've mentioned it plenty times, but Comer is absolutely key to our chances. He showed it again at the weekend and changed the game. Without him, we'd almost certainly have lost. I hope we're able to get a full fit 70+ minutes from him in the Connacht final. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2253 - 23/04/2024 10:27:15 2540063 Link 0 |
Anyone who spends their money on going to matches is entitled to their opinion. Very few people would question the fact that PJ was one of our best ever players, or that his heart is fully invested in that maroon Jersey that he wore with pride. However, when you see the impact Jim Mc Guinness has had on the Donegal setup, you realize the difference a top class "proven manager" can make. Galway tend to select officials on sentiment and not by a successful track record and I've no doubt we will continue to do so. Optimism and enthusiasm are no substitute for knowledge and experience. I think they can. O'Shea was well handled by Hernon last year and McGrath has a good record on O'Donoghue. It's the likes of Paddy Durcan and McBrien(last year) that have been doing the damage.

you suggest moving john daly who has never played wing back at county level and struggles against quick players out of centre back (where he won an all star) right... that makes sense drop conroy and play who in midfield, maher and darcy? or do you have another great plan for there as well jimmy cavan.galway (Galway) - Posts: 222 - 23/04/2024 12:21:12 2540102 Link 0 |
If I hear one more excuse out of PJ! He needs to own it, take a proper gaffer's responsibility, not blame his players in his immature fashion, he needs to be locked in and see the changes in game. McStay could eat him alive in in-match switches and tactics if he doesn't own this one. So, no more excuses PJ - talk is cheap, time to deliver.

Perhaps you're being facetious but IMHO conroy may have been below par against Sligo but I think it's very harsh to say poor this year - he missed a few games in the league. Truth being told he rises to the challenge against Mayo as shown in pearse stadium last year when he was one of a few that could leave Salt-Hill with his head held high. My belief is we will give Mayo a right test the sunday week, we hammered sligo last year and were not any better for it, granted that is not the performance we would have wanted last weekend but it could serve as a reminder to these lads that no game is won on paper.

I actually think it's easier play as a wing back if u struggle for pace as most wing forwards go back into there own half but most centre forwards play along the half forward line and that's when Daly struggle big time ,,,again only my opinion

Ara Mayo will outnumber Galway supporters 2 to 1 as they always do in Salthill. They have a much better record v Galway in Salthill than in Castlebar so they will be bulling to win this one. As John O'Mahony once famously said "there's only one ******* answer to that!"

See the Under 20 team is out. Thompson, Costello, Murphy will be key in the forwards. Heneghan has some serious potential and would be better centre forward. Lonergan lucky enough to start as he was poor in last couple of matches, though I am being unfair he is probably a bit too young yet and will get better with time. He probably wouldnt start if everyone was fit. Great to have Kilcommons back in after injury. Team fell apart when he went off against Mayo. I expect him to be on at half time. McGlinchey is a good player but only lasts 20-25 mins in a match. Thought Greaney would start centre back. What happened Bermingham from Headford. is he injured? Hard to beat a team twice. If we play with fear in attack, defaulting to constant recycling and playing it safe, not taking on the man, not playing creatively but stifled into 'just don't make a mistake' football, then I've zero doubt that Mayo will win. Those predictable patterns are turnover heaven for them, they'll smother us and frustrate us out of the game. What McStay and the Mayo back lines categorically don't want is Galway bringing chaos, high tempo mayhem with lots of support runners, lines run at speed at all kinds of angles. They won't handle it and we have to bring chaos. Mayo did it for years, in the matches where they really clicked they'd bring a couple of 10-15 min spells of absolute mayhem, that looked almost unstructured and fluid but was well rehearsed, they had an internal name for it - the name escapes me - it was mayhem or something to that affect - and that's what their defence and midfield would not like to see from us. I'm not sure if we've the fitness to do it but predictability and playing it safe plays into McStay and Rochford's hands - trust me, they'll handle that all day long, they won't handle full throttle creative football half as well. togoutlads (Galway) - Posts: 1022 - 23/04/2024 18:27:04 2540233 Link 1 |
We need to be brave against Mayo and take on our man. Constant recycle will kill us. Mayonman (Galway) - Posts: 1915 - 23/04/2024 23:40:42 2540304 Link 0 |
More like Mayo support outnumbering Galway 3 to 1. Galway will have about 6,000.
