I think at this stage if cluxton transfer to Galway he be a sub management won't change unfortunately ,, it will be there downfall Galway's without doubt worse team prob in top 2 division winning own kickouts and even when he does go short it's along the ground snd players under pressure straight away other top teams win kickouts and they are attacking our half back line slow and poor kickers of ball never go forward with kick Daly takes about 6 solos go 10 yards sweeney at wing forward runs into tackles or over Carry ball I'm not blaming them it's management fault , they kept picking them , Paul conroy kicks more ball away than any player , then Joyce comes out and says we have lots stuff work on he there 5? Years snd worse they are getting,,

Stephen Cluxton
Colm Reape
Niall Morgan
Rory Beggan
Conor Carroll
Colm Reape
Shane Ryan
And secondly, which of the above counties would he be starting for."
To be fair, no Galway goalkeeper would start ahead of any of them. Even Carroll, who was ahead of Flaherty u21. But I get your point.

Replying To togoutlads:  "Conor Flaherty and Corofin's Oran Burke are simply better keepers but bafflingly, our management seem to pride themselves on being particularly obstinate on this selection. They're making this mistake time and time again and it's costing us. As Henry Ford said "the only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing." It seems our management have learned nothing here, so sadly we can expect them to repeat the mistake."
Oran Burke has played 1 championship game for corofin? Needs some more credit in the bank. But from what I've seen, he is talented. But many other proven keepers in the county.

I didn't promote Conor Flaherty anywhere in my post. I haven't commented on him at all. I will say that I say him play poorly for his club as an outfielder last year and I didn't see him play in the Sigerson. He surely needs to be playing games in goal to be our best option. Oran Burke doesn't get a game for our club. So same issue.

I will say that I think both of them, and a few other goalkeepers in the county, would be better than what we have consistently seen from our current goalkeeper. I don't think he should be running up to catch his own kickout but I think he should be able to kick it to his own players, and he is not. All he does is whack it and we can all see it.

The guy is 31 - not some outstanding young prospect learning the ropes and "developing".

If Conor has fisted in the goal ye would be singing a different story no doubt. He will do that the next time hopefully.

Need to start thinking outside the box now definitely in 2025. Morgan, Rafferty, Shane Ryan, all playing outfield for the club. A man beside me in Clones that if Beggan doesn't come back, Darren Hughes could be in goal in the summer, then you also have the Marty Clarke talk, position has definitely evolved

Replying To FatLadySinging:  "Do you (and others) really expect our excellent goalkeeper Conor Gleeson to kick the ball out and then to run as fast as he possibly can to catch it himself around the 60 yard line? The nonsense on here about changing the goalkeeper is mindblowing. The job of midfielders and outfield players is to catch the ball. If they are not able to do that and if short kick-out options are not available, it is not the goalkeeper's fault if they are found wanting. There is constant talk of bringing in the goalkeeper on the ditch, Flaherty, whose reputation seems to be growing into all time great status, the less he plays. If I were him I'd do like the hurler and stay sitting on the ditch. He will surely go down in Galway football folklore. Gleeson is developing into a class goalkeeper and Galway are fortunate to have him. So lay off."
Excellent goalkeeper ? and the sarcastic remark about catching his own kickouts says it all

Paul Conroy cant play midfield forever but played in goals in the past. Conroy would be able to ping passes out the pitch but I expect Paul will play outfield for as long as he can.

Conor Flaherty was actually one of Claregalways top scorers last year.He does play in goals for Sigerson and has done for 4 years and has made 2 finals in a row and semi this year.

Conor Flaherty was ahead of Conor Carroll at under 20 and won an All Ireland final at that age group with Galway.

It's 2019 U20, Oran Burke was in goal. I believe Conor Carroll was the sub. Open to correction

A lot of talk here again about goalkeepers, the one problem doesn't matter who's in goal we don't have a kick out plan we have zero movement from any of our backs and when or if they get it they don't want it, someone posted on this that club teams in Galway have better kick out strategies, so for pj he seems to go long and play the percentages and not to go coinciding soft goals just like Roscommon did on Sunday,

Granted not all of the injuries happened when involved with county. However we do seem to have a lot.

When Conroy had the shirt pulled off him, I didn't see much of a six pack. Not trying to be cruel or anything. Fantastic footballer and in great shape compared to 99.9% of population however I wonder if the shirrt was ripped off anyone from any of the other top 8 teams what we would have seen.

Maybe I'm putting 2+2 and getting 5 but you would wonder about the S&C in the squad.

Outside of the negatives the last day, I must say I enjoyed the exhibition of high fielding. Although the exponents were mainly Kerry players, Cien Darcy also fielded one magnificent ball. Hopefully, he continues to improve too, playing club football in Dublin.

I feel the art of fielding should be encouraged and practised from a very young age, and underage coaches should prioritise this gracious art.

Sorry, meant to say that Flaherty was ahead of Carroll underage. But Carroll is a proven keeper at this level now and is ahead of Flaherty now imo.

Ah come on. Whether he had punched in a late goal is irrelevant when acknowledging the massive problems we have with our kickout. A goalkeeper punching in a high ball for a late winner is a one in a hundred moment (probably even less). Kickouts are a goalie's bread and butter.
It's a collective responsibility, from goalkeeper to outfield players and management team. It's a massive area of weakness, which is clearly targeted by opposition.
The fact that it's been an issue for a number of years and we're still no better at, is a failure. It puts us under massive pressure. Kickouts are a set-piece and can be practiced and planned ad infinitum. You don't expect to win all of them, but most good teams are retaining a very high percentage of their kickouts.
