Adrian varley should also still be there, a real classy footballer Dunmore10 (Galway) - Posts: 153 - 01/03/2024 19:33:53 2529129 Link 0 |
Problem about being from a junior club is that most junior teams are playing in North or West board div 4b or 5 or 6 against other clubs second string and it's a lottery when you play them ( if lads away with first team or not), when county board realigned the Leagues they should've put every clubs first team in 1-4 ( it would have naturally evened out after 2 years) then introduce the second teams like the north & west boards had before anyway, instead they made a mess of it and it's probably effected the likes of Clifden, Clonbur, Ballinasloe and Headford to name a few, so w great players with junior clubs in Galway but the standard from Div 1 to 4b etc is massive and probably does count against players.

Surprised how weak our options are upfront even with all the injuries. Are tomó or Dessie on the panel this year? allstars23 (Galway) - Posts: 49 - 02/03/2024 02:58:14 2529164 Link 0 |
Dessie no, Tomo injured I believe. There's a dearth of quality forwards in Galway from watching club games. We have the best forwards on the panel more or less. Paul Mannion, Varley and Antaine O Laoi probably the only 2 missing but Joyce doesn't seem to want them and Varley is 30 odd now.

Along with the players mentioned above, I'm surprised that PJ has dropped an out and out forward like Owen Gallagher who is quick, can break tackles and take his scores when the chances arise while he struggles to convert halfbacks / midfielders like Sweeney, Heaney, Darcy and Daly into effective / consistent forwards. Doesn't make sense.

Yeah Gallagher is definitely a better forward than some lads that are starting at the moment (the lads that are not forwards that are being played there for some reason). Maybe he couldn't or wouldn't commit either I'm not sure galwayman2 (Galway) - Posts: 1302 - 02/03/2024 11:36:14 2529192 Link 0 |
I actually think Roscommon have the best forward depth in Connacht now. They have loads of good options even with Ciaran Murtagh and Cian McKeon gone for the year. Mayo have gone very reliant on Ryan O'Donoghue for scores. Conroy has been off the boil since his injury. Walsh and Comer at their best are probably a level above any other forwards in Connacht but we're not seeing them out on the field at the moment.

It does... He stepped away Galwaymaster9 (Galway) - Posts: 397 - 02/03/2024 12:57:47 2529205 Link 0 |
Perhaps the reason he stepped away (if that is true) was that he was not getting enough of game time.

Rossies have serious forwards on paper, probably best in Connacht I agree.

I've always thought varley was the best target man outside of damo in Galway, he's not the best finisher but wins so much ball. His days at IC are probably done with the age profile

Adrian is the same age as Shane Walsh, Damo, Liam Silke, Daithi Burke, Ian Burke etc, they were all on the same U21 winning team. He is far from been too old.

He's hardly an old man at 30 though. Many players keep going until 34 or 35.

Galway team that beat Monaghan by six points last year. Drax_the_destroyer (UK) - Posts: 324 - 02/03/2024 15:36:22 2529233 Link 0 |
Jaysus the Mayo vs Roscommon game was dire stuff particularly the second half. We have to beat Monaghan now, its a must win. Hard to believe that Roscommon team beat Monaghan by so much last week. League form is totally up and down. JahTribe (Galway) - Posts: 155 - 02/03/2024 21:08:35 2529298 Link 0 |
They looked very average tonight most of the time.

League form could get even more 'up and down' in the last two rounds of games too, if Kerry, Mayo or Derry enter a slow bicycle race, for the right not to oppose the Dubs in a league final. The Dubs look motivated to win out imo, and take the NFL title. Galway likely in a must win game tomorrow, to avoid relegation.

Mayo did us a massive favour tonight. Now PJ has to show no mercy to his in-laws tomorrow.. Really (Galway) - Posts: 623 - 02/03/2024 22:46:40 2529330 Link 0 |

dire stuff particularly from us the second half. You should beat Monaghan by a bit to spare they looked like a Div 3 team against us last week and it was easy to see why Derry, Kerry hammered them also. They have too many players out Galway have a lot better strength in depth
