Replying To togoutlads:  "So it looks like we could lose our great future hope for Galway midfield to Aussie rules - this crack is infuriating! James McLaughlin from Moycullen is heading down there on trials with a few other rising stars from around the country as the multi-million professional AFL franchises vulture swoop in again. It's the lads' prerogative and good luck to them if that's their call but so annoying for Club and County coaches who've put massive work, time, burned diesel and more to bring these players on and the AFL lifts them with not so much as a set of jerseys or a bag of footballs as a thank you to those clubs and coaches for 15+ years of prep and guidance. AFL scouts are a blight on our game and should be ran out of the place imo. They're laughing at us but putting our primed athletes on a silver platter for them, and this I know for a fact from guys involved in the scene in Melbourne."
Best of luck to him but I'd be slightly surprised if he gets a contract. He doesn't have the mobility they usually want from their Irish players. They usually target lads who can run all day up and down the field. Which isn't really his game. As good an athlete as he is he's not usually their type of athlete. But I could be mistaken.

Given Conroy is probably gone in the next year or two max it would definitely be a loss to Galway though.

Jim Stynes was their type of athlete for a good few seasons, but then his health failed him.

Steady on there Tiger - he has barely started a game for Moycullen never mind Galway over the last few seasons. He has had a bad run with injuries

He played almost 11 seasons without missing a single game, which was an AFL record. He was well able to cover the ground for a man of his height. He had a brilliant career by the time he hung up the boots.

Been to plenty moycullen games yes he's young but def not IC standard. Sam o Neil is miles ahead of him. I'd b very surprised if he makes it, he always has some niggle or injury that's down to recovery powers or lack off and afl will know this. He'd be far better off throwing the lot in with his club

Imagine been a nailed on starter for your intercounty team, but you realise deep down inside you as you look around the dressing room that these lads will never be able to stop the pain even after 72 years so you head off to Carlton.

Cillian McDaid was injured for 3 years after he came back, James McLoughlin is doing it the other way around. Hard to see how his body is going to cope with professional AFL after the couple of years he's had. Matt Duffy from Longford I've seen once and he's just been signed, completely different player to James McLoughlin. All that said, I wish him all the best and hope he's a success. I would have imagined Peter Cooke would have been well suited to it.

I'm told that McLaughlin is still only 20 he was just 17 when he won his senior medal in 2020 he missed much 2021 due to injury and all 2022 following major thigh /hip surgery ,so I can see how he's not yet a senior inter-county player, whether he becomes one will have to wait until he has been tried. Comparing him to Sam O'Neill is something I can't comment on as I have never herd of the latter in Galway football let alone seen him.His injury seems to date back to the 2020 county final. I would not hazard a guess as to how he would handle the Aussie Rules game or competition as it is very different to football but some can master many codes ie rugby ,soccer and more.

Jack of all trades master of one. He'd be better off mastering football first. Suppose if you want to be a nailed on starter for moycullen you can't actually have been born there. Best of luck to him

You are perfectly right, may be it's why footballs his only game so far excepting a little while after the hurling cul camps. As for not been born in Moycullen correct again, there must 4 or 5 maybe other country passports that players are entitled to by birth, much the same as for the hurlers but that's not an issue because they aren't seen as likely to take away anyones sense of entitlement soon by winning a county championship therefore no no need to apply any fanaticism to them .Maybe one day that might change too if they keep improving.

Did you get out to watch any games last year or see any this year? Sam was outstanding for Galway U20's last year and has been very good for the Jimmy's this year. It is disappointing to to read people haven't heard of him, people need to get out and watch games. This is were the upcoming players are.

McLaughlin was excellent as a minor for Galway but he's played very little football since. Out due to Covid for the U20's when they won the AI in 2020. Otherwise he would have been on that team. Not played much ball since. I think he'd be better off trying to stay fit and playing a good run of games again for club and then county rather than farting around with the AFL but good luck to him if he wants to go down that road. I'd have doubts about his chances of making a success of it but you'd wish any young lad the best.

Fully agree with you re Sam O Neill. Anyone who has had any real interest in Galway football would seen and/or heard of him. He is a serious prospect and I expect and hope that he will be a major player for Galway for the next 10 years.
