U17. Playing them at U20 next week. Sligo will be favourites for that one.

I think that is the minor grade.. Good win. Mayo also beat Roscommon well.

Sligo have an excellent u-20 team. Just saw plans for the development of gaa grounds at Oranmore/Maree - will be something else when completed..

Galway U20's in my opinion will take beating. The team is backboned by St Jarlaths and Claregalway colleges, they were by far the best school teams at U19 level last year. There is a view going that Sligo are very strong due to the Summerhill win this year. I think Galway have enough.

Yes it looks like all the focus is on Sligo who beat a clueless Mayo team. Sligo are trying to improve underage and fair play to them but U20 is important for Galway to do well in. It will be interesting to see how our lads get on against Sligo.

If Galway are 1st seeds in the round robin nonsense are we looking at Mayo and Tyrone being 2 of the 3rd seeds?
If so this new format will completely kill the provincial championships as early as next year with the likes of today's brilliant match between Monaghan and Tyrone becoming an actual disadvantage to win.

The losers of Roscommon/Galway and Monaghan Derry will most likely be the other 3rd seed teams. My view as a Mayo supporter was that the Mayo/Roscommon game was a disadvantage to win.

When the Rossies beat Galway this Sunday (hopefully!) Galway won't have to worry about playing Mayo or Tyrone in the group stages as you will all be seeded group 3 and in different groups.
There is an advantage of winning on Sunday as it gives you a good chance of winning Connacht and more than likely avoiding Kerry and Dublin in the group stages.
This in turn also gives you a better chance of winning the group and therefore qualifying directly for the quarter finals. This would mean one less highly competitive match at the business end of the season and a week extra to recover from injuries etc. (No preliminary quarter final)
Winning a Connacht title should also be celebrated at any time. Ask any Roscommon or Sligo/New York supporter.

For any county in any province , as I have already said there is a big incentive to win your province. The tier 3 trap door enjoyed by Div 1 teams is a bit over played as an advantage.
Lets assume that Dublin and Kerry win their provinces ( almost a given) , Derry win Ulster ( not as much a given) , and Galway win Connacht ( much more of a 50/50)
In this scenario Tier 3 would be full of sharks that you would like to avoid Tyrone, Monaghan, Mayo , Roscommon.
However Tier 1 would have even bigger sharks that you really, really, would like to avoid..Kerry, Dublin, Derry, Galway

The Jarlaths team who were annihilated by Naas last year, were miles off the required standard

Galway Championship panel announced. Some notable inclusions. Kieran Molloy, Sean Mulkerrin, James Mcloughlin. I presume it means they are expected to be available (unless there is no limit on numbers and he is just keeping them involved).

Also Niall Daly is named having not seen a minute in the League. Was he injured? Showed some promise last year.

12 of 16 to qualify, and at least 3 sardines already confirmed among the 'sharks' in the those last sixteen, with all due respect to Connacht & Munster runner-up & Tailteann champs.

Hardly a recipe for edge of the seat intrigue, this 'group stage' for Sam. Smacks more of a fundraising scheme imo.

Don't bother complaining about their transfers. Just back them to win the cup and make money off it. Latest betting is up:

Moycullen 9/4
Mountbellew 5/2
Corofin 7/2
Salthill 6/1
Annaghdown 14/1
Claregalway 16/1
Tuam 16/1
28/1 and bigger the rest

Only a disadvantage in hindsight. We flattered to decieve in the league, never tested. An inexperienced defence has a lot of improving to do and our forwards need to improve their scoring rate from play if we're to have any chance of getting to the last 4.
