Replying To Marooned: "Yes, 1990 was Galway's last championship defeat in the Hyde. Galway have a very good record there in fairness. Strangely enough, Galway also have a good record in Castlebar. When they've lost in Connacht in recent times it's usually been in Salthill." I remember that game vaguely from 1990 Galway won the minor. Tomas Mannion was in the forwards. When I think back, I was 11 but the one thing that's sticks in my head about being brought to Galway games that time was just how good Val Daly was. He stood out a mile and was nearly unmarkable in a lot of games.

Replying To endgame: "We both have dodgy Galway goalkeepers.! Should make for plenty of excitement. Will ye have Cillian McDaid back for The Hyde clash. Galway are better than Mayo despite the League Final so Roscommon will need to improve on last Sunday to get to the Connacht Final." Hard one to call. The defenses are similar and probably equally effective. Ross I reckon have the edge around the middle in terms of fielding ability and hunger for breaks. We may have a slight edge up front if we have a full deck available. This game may not come to life until well into the second half. Hoping for a bit of sunshine for it.

Replying To Yondu: "Not a fair comment to call your young keeper dodgy. Gleeson dodgy is a bit overplayed at this stage also.
Roscommon produced a solid hard working performance last Sunday if repeated against Galway your team will be hard to beat in the Hyde. Joyce and his management i feel will have their home work done and will have pushed on after hard training in Portugal to dge this encounter." Ara come on everyone knows Gleeson is dodgy at this stage in fairness and even he knows it! lol

Replying To Albara: "In Shane Walsh, Galway have the best player in lreland. Roscommon have the brilliant Enda Smith, D Murtagh et al and possess a better team collective so they will probably win it. Galway has a bigger panel, so in the longer run they might go further in the All lreland series." Shane Walsh is most skillful player in Ireland but hard to look past Clifford as the best imo. Not sure how you think Roscommon have a better team. Roscommon have loads of really good players but they are yet to produce it on the biggest stage. What will define Roscommon's year will be how they get on in group stages and if they can win a big game in Croke Park. For all the talent they do have they haven't won a championship game in croker unless i'm forgetting one. Personally I think both teams are have similar strengths and weaknesses.
On a different note, the importance of winning the provencial title has been seriously diluted. The real carrot for winning Connacht in recent years was avoiding Kerry and Dublin in quarters. Every third year you'd also get avoid them in a semi and would only have to play them in a final if you were lucky enough to ge there. The fact that 3 teams emerge from the group means it might not be any harm playing against one early on to see where you stand. For example, If you play a Dublin in the group you might avoid in the knockout stages aswell as i'm sure the GAA will want to avoid repeat pairings until the semi-final stage at least. Last year it suited Galway not having to try to take down both Dublin and Kerry and let one take down the other.
The fact that Mayo have a six week break and if the draw is kind to them they could have an ideal run to the final. Where as Ros or Galway could have a much more difficult route. The flaws in the system will truly become apparent as the season progresses.

While there is nothing to be sniffed at beating Mayo or Galway in Connacht, the real test of progression for Roscommon will be to start beating and performing well against top 10 teams in Croker. A good chunk of that team have played a good few games there between Div 2 league finals, super 8s and last 8 and 16 games. They just need to get bring it to the next level now.

Nothing beats playing football this time of year and with a two week break between a Connacht Semi and Final it's ideal. 2 games in 28 days if you will.

Replying To WanPintWin: "I agree with that in general. However, the two marks Clifford took in last year's All-Ireland weren't close in to goal. They were a bit further out. One came from a mis-hit or blocked kick which fell well short. It was caught at chest height. For the other one Sean was with Clifford but didn't even contest it, which I've no doubt he was disappointed with. At the same time, you can't take away his attacking game as it's a huge weapon. There's nobody else who can carry the ball out so effectively, and do it over and over throughout a game. He balanced the two very well against Kerry in the last league match, where he had a brilliant game. I also remember him doing similar against Mayo in the 2020 Connacht final where he was again exceptional. He marked O'Shea that day too and ran the legs off him. I wouldn't be sold on Mulkerrin being the full time option at full-back either. Apart from pace, he also struggled physically with O'Shea in the 2nd half of the 2021 Connacht final, after Kelly went off injured. There's no full-back who won't be exposed from time to time. Foley had a lot of protection last year for Kerry, but has looked very poor in some games in this year's league." It was leafy we will see different Kerry I am sure fokey didn't become bad player over night final game vs Galway in league he was not bad .

That narrative was been spun before the Roscommon game mate. That's what we have now so from our perspective it's the all Ireland group stages we have to focus on from here. Would you rather we say we are doomed? I don't think so.

Fair point but sometimes being able to regroup and having a block to do training can pay dividends. Kilkenny looked average during their whole Leinster campaign. They had 4 weeks off and came back a different animal. Of course they had a few tough championship games already under their belt but the few weeks off suited them. 6 weeks is a long time and nothing can beat match sharpness but they'll be able to clear up any little niggles. The more matches ypu play the more injuries you will likely pick up aswell.

He certainly didn't become a bad player overnight. My point is any full-back can look bad if there's very little pressure on the ball further out. Foley was all at sea in the league game against Mayo, but that wasn't all his fault. If a good forward is getting quality ball in regularly, any full-back will struggle. The great Darren Fay had a poor outing in the 2001 final. Seamus Moynihan struggled in the semi-final of the same year against Meath, when they were overrun. I still think full-back is the most suited position for Kelly. - He's brilliant at carrying the ball down the middle through traffic. - He's more effective attacking from deep. - He's not a corner back. - John Daly is an excellent centre-back. - I think he'd be wasted at wing back, given his ability to go right up the middle. - I don't think midfield would be ideal, as he's not the strongest fielder.

Win Connacht and you: a) Avoid other 3 provincial champs in group e.g. Dublin, Kerry Tyrone, say b) By avoiding these in the group it increases chances of winning group and getting directly to QF c) If you get directly to QF and the big 3, above, do likewise you also avoid them in the Quarter Final
Ros potentially with 2 games in 4 weeks more than Mayo is not a huge issue.
Hence , I believe, that Kevin McStay is extremely disappointed to lose on Sunday. The silver lining on the cloud of defeat is being exaggerated far too much by certain people , in the effort to get over the disappointment.
Similarly , from a Galway perspective , I will be bitterly disappointed if we lose to Roscommon......far far more disappoined than I was after the League final defeat.

Same as that, I will be bitterly disappointed if we lose to Roscommon too. And by no means am I suggesting in any way that Roscommon are not a serious, top tier team - they are, simple as that. We have to give them that full respect. But if we're to lose to them, Galway momentum and our regained standing and confidence as a top tier county will be hammered - we can't lose to Ros in the league, Mayo in the league final, and Ros again in the Championship. We need to put the chest out a bit in Connacht and lay down a marker. We're not a soft touch now, we're not in transition, we're not unfit, we're not too young or old, we're out of excuses - we need to win and then make a habit of it and do it again and again. We desperately need this win to get some momentum back and to give the fickle 80% of Galway footballing public feeling some real belief in the team again. You just have to be beating the neighbours, the old rivals, it's fundamental and it's huge in this game of ours where the local bragging rights have always been part of the narrative and will continue to be - that's part of what makes our games so special. We need a bit of that back. Can't wait for the day out in The Hyde! Up Galway!

There is a theory that Mayo had no interest in winning last Sunday as they can now go of and concentrate on the All Ireland c'ship for the next 6 weeks with the league title already salted away. I didn't think that was a plausible idea but after further review it makes perfect sense. They won't risk any injuries with no further participation in th Connacht c'ship, will go into group stages of c'ship fresh, even in a group with Kerry or Dublin qualification for knockout is almost a certainty and could probably avoid these teams again until very late in championship, this scenario would work for many other counties in Div 1&2 and it will be interesting to see how this c'ship pans out especially with only 4 of the 16 teams getting eliminated at the group stage.

D'ont know where this theory came from. Whoever came up with it obviously was not in Castlebar last Sunday where both teams went at it 100%. Diarmuid O' Connor or Aiden O Shea and the other Mayo players did not seem too happy with the result. Should be a great game in the Hyde in two weeks time. Davy Burke will be happy that we are not given much chance again with the bookies. (2-1) Wonder how the Galway training camp is going. How is Shane Walsh getting so much time off again from his studies/exams?
Question 1. If Roscommon go on to win Connacht (1st seeds) can they be in the same group as Mayo (3rd seeds) Question 2. If Galway win Connacht (1st seeds) can they be drawn in the same group as Roscommon (3rd seeds) - Similar question! Question 3. Is Croke Park or Parnell Park Dublin's home ground? For the super 8's some years ago was Croke Park deemed to be a neutral ground. Surely Dublin can't have Croke Park as both their home and neutral ground?
May the best and most deserving team win in the Hyde. Hopefully it will be a great and sporting game.
