Reape went for the ball and didn't win it, he could have no excuses if punishment was worse.

Don't get your point on defensive either, it's quiet rich actually considering Galway created 25 scoring opportunities to Mayo's 23. It was our shooting that let us down ultimately but we got into good scoring positions so that's a positive.

Arrah touch O Shea and it was a free by that ref, 5 missed goal chances, missed 45s, hawkeye and Mayo at their peak beat you by 3 points you would expect Galway while disappointed will see there is scope there to improve.

Talking about "mouthing". One of the great Dublin players recently "reminisced" about the 1991 Leinster 1st. round - 3rd replay v Meath.

During a break, in the huddle, Tommy Conroy trying to get that extra zenith from his team mates started mouthing... Keith Barr, who had fought a war in the game up to that point, interrupted his spill... "Tommy, shut tfu!!" Tommy duelly Stfu..

So, in the context of Galway, perhaps for some on the sideline, It's time to Stfu!

Replying To LottoPlus:  "Sweeney is no Heaney. Chalk and cheese. Heaney is a unsung hero of Galway and a brilliant workhorse. I still don't know what Sweeney's role is in the Galway team. He is a very good club player and we have seen that many good clubs players never make the transition. and they are usually from stronger clubs. What I mean about that is take the likes of Lundy, Sice, Steed (Corofin) serious club players but did not make real impact in the county. It is because if one of them have a bad day then there was enough good players to fill the gap and their club would still win. These players weakness in county (like Sweeney) is that they dont have to be in top form all the time. The county player you need is a player that is a leader in his club team (Like Heaney, Comer, Walshe, Conroy, ) If they don't turn up for their club the club looses. You can see that even with Kelly from Moycullen he plays bad Moycullen loose. Same with John Daly. Search around the club seen and there are plenty of that sort of player (ex county underage) who when they play against the bigger clubs are double marked because the bigger club can afford to leave some of his less talented teammates free. That player will play fullback, Midfield, Centre Forward mark the best opposition player and generally play anywhere the team needs him. Sweeney et al just played at wing back and in fairness not many wing forwards at club level would have been able for him but county is different."
Awful waffle. Sweeney has been one of the positives of the league for me, great to see him kick on from last years limited involvement.

Definitely wouldnt say Heaney and Sweeney are chalk and cheese. Both will run all day for the team and can both be deployed in either the half back or half forward lines.

Players with this kind of versatility and desire to work are what's needed in the modern game if you want to compete for the big honours.

Bookies not expecting much of a contest in the u20 championship tonight. Galway 1/33 while Leitrim are 9/1. I presume the side will be similar to that which started the John Kerins Cup final.

What's a dry day got to do with Michael Daly?

Mayo looked far more athletic and better conditioned than Galway on Sunday. However Galway have the more natural footballers but looked a little lethargic. Be interesting to see how the Connacht Semi Final goes when they meet again.

Mayo had a far more extensive pre season, with their full panel. The real picture will emerge later on in the season.

Ahhshure Reape didn't go for the ball!!

There's a picture of a moment in time from the incident on balls.ie that I found surprising. Surprising, because there was a lot of space between Heaney and Reape, as Heaney kicks the ball. Like maybe 3or4 yards? Which perhaps begs two questions . 1 was that a bad miss by Heaney? and 2 how could Reape possibly whack Heaney from that range under the guise of 'going for the ball'?

I don't know the answer to 1 above. I do know the answer to 2 though, which is why it was a red card all day long imo.

I'd agree with that in general. I thought neither team was great.
I'm a bit surprised at the coverage afterwards. I'm seeing a lot of Mayo were excellent and comfortable winners commentary from pundits.
Galway made a poor enough start, but actually had the better of the rest of the game and had more scoring chances overall, not to mention more goal chances.
There was only a point in it at a number of stages in the 2nd half and we should have levelled a few times but for some poor finishing and decision making.
We gave away a lot of frees in front of the posts, some which were legit, but at least 2 of which were incredibly soft.
Overall, I thought there was very little between the teams and I don't think the end result changes my opinion on either team for the year ahead. I think both are contenders in what looks like a fairly open championship.
At the same time, finals are there to be won and we've come out the wrong side again. I hope we rectify that in the best way possible later in the summer.

yes we lost, no excuse for that, Mayo are a good side but June/July is where the action is now.
Both counties need to improve and I hope Mayo win Sam if we can't close the deal.
GAA have killed off provincial championships, that had a good run in fairness.
When is the Portugal camp, anybody know?

I watched the game back. That first 20 minutes was a killer. An acre in front of O'Donoghue and McGrath and Carr, Flynn and Durcan points all came from that same wing. Durcan missed 2 others.
The problem was not McGraths. Finnerty, Tierney and Hernon taking up bad positions, not tracking and way too loose. Hernon got the curly finger but could have easily been Tierney. In fairness to the management, we changed it at half time and got more bodies to block the channel and that's when Mayo's scores dried up.
