So many good performances today with Tierney top of the bill. To be fair I thought Gleeson did very well today, be great to see him continue that and build his confidence. With Tierney and Cooke(they should work on his ability in the air as he is well able) in the half forward line and Gleesons ability to hit it long it creates real options as teams can't push up too much meaning we can go long or short.
We missed a good bit in the first half but there was a horrible wind. Felt a bit sorry for Eoin Finnerty, nothing went right for him, I hope they keep faith with him or at least give him another chance as we need depth and he has quality. That being said Sweeney who came on for him really came of age and showed he is a serious option for us this year. Great win overall ,

A Performance like today would give you plenty of encouragement to look forward.
Match day 21 could have a strong ,settled look about it by April , if the injury Gods stayed on our side.

Joyces Definites...
1. McDaid
2. S. Kelly
3. Conroy
4. Walsh
5. Daly
6. Comer
7. D. McHugh
8. Tierney
9. Heaney.
10. R. Finnerty
11. Gleeson ( can't see a change )

Probables
12. Glynn.
13. Burke.
14. Cooke.
16. Power.
17. Paul Kelly
18. Sweeney.

19. Patrick Kelly ?
20. Eoin Kelly. ?
21. McGrath . ?

Possibles.
B. Mannion
O'Flaherty ( Salthill )
O.'Flaherty ( Claregalway )
J. Maher
Conneeley.
E. Finnerty.
E. Gallagher ( always seems like a good footballer to me but Management don't seem to rate him for some reason )

Makings of a strong 21 there despite some reservations at Keeper and possibly Midfield ...couple of the Possibles might replace a couple of Probables but either way it's an encouraging list.

The format of the Championship this year might mean you need a lot of luck with injuries.

Bit of a random one here but would anyone know if you can buy the current Galway ladies football jersey anywhere? The one in the O Neil's website looks a bit different to the one they seem to be wearing this season.
Thanks

Replying To Galwayspur:  "I think the only criticism of him could be he doesn't do it often enough, for such a big man. When did we last see him do that.

He was super today, more next week please.

Can someone explain how we have a keeper that can kick a ball 50plus yards against a strong wind and we spend most of our time trying to get short ones away which we are crap at, it's very annoying."
To be fair in the first half when we had the wind Tyrone just retreated deep and gave us the short kick out. If he went long they had the numerical advantage out the field so would likely have won the majority of them.

With Damien ad Shane to be added, and I believe Molloy and McLoughlan are getting close to a run too, we could be hummin for championship."
Ah now I'm all for the optimism but Kieran Molloy had ACL surgery late last year - he is a long way off being close to any sort of game time.
Great win today though 100%

Gleeson is improving - but it's a slow burner. Watching him, I always get the the impression that the transition from the "beautiful game" to Gaa is now a psychological issue rather than ability. Sure he can adjust.. and the process could be helped by engaging with a sports psychologist. Sweeney is a very game lad - delighted to see him getting on the end of scores.

I would love to have seen a Tuam, Dunmore or Ballinasloe outfield player there today..esp. it the spiritual home. But I suppose we can't have everything..we'll just have to put up with the Corofin cheerleaders..

Why? Unless you have a player in mind who you think could've added to the panel why do you want random players there to make up the North galway numbers. West galway and city players not good enough for you? The team that was picked and the subs that were used won the game. A great team effort. If the team had this attitude we would win nothing

That is the ladies footbsll jersey on the website, with Galway on the back and not PAPA Johns. The camogie team have a different jersey and sponsor Westerwood global. I don't see that on the website.

Thought he had op in September. End of March would be 6 months.

Even so it would be a big ask to be back by April. Then getting match fit etc.

They say its a 6 month injury these days but I presume that's for professionals with full time rehab/ physio/rest etc

Long term health has to be priority

I don't think it's this seasons one though?
I dont think the one they are wearing now has that design running through it?
I could be wrong of course :-)

Ballinasloe are effectively junior B standard in Gaelic football these days. Sad as they had a fine team that won the AI junior ten years ago.
But they are gone to the dogs since

First Half, 8 kick outs, 8 short and we won possession from all 8. (Tyrone withdrew everyone against the wind)

Second Half, 16 kick outs, won 8. Of that 16, 14 long won 7 and 2 short won 1 and 1 out over the line.

Anyone thinking we had some sort of new and improved strategy yesterday is barking up the wrong tree.

Wind had an effect though on the long kick outs so i wouldnt be reading anything into the stats for the game. Morgan's mid to long kick outs in the first half were much worse than Gleesons.

Very glad to say I was wrong as some of the players that had been playing poorly up to now like Tierney and Conroy played very well. Cooke could have been better I thought overall apart from his nice point in the first half and Heaney definitely upped his performance yesterday but also can play better. Overall I was happy that they didn't just sit back in the second half when playing against the wind and showed some fight / spirit as well as injecting a badly needed bit of pace / intent in attack. A lot done but more to do!

agreed. wind held the kick outs up in the air so it was much more difficult to win for us in the second half. Not sure of the stats in the first half but i felt we dominated their kick out from about 15 minutes in (once we decided to push up on it)

Replying To The_analyser:  "Good win today lads, having seen both in action and the fact we had a more comfortable win over Tyrone I'm not overly surprised Galway at home won. Looking at your remaining games I won't be surprised if you end up in a league final though the last game at home to Kerry could be a decider"
Us winning with several key absentees is the critical piece in my view. According to the Tyrone gentleman beside me yesterday in Tuam Stadium he was pretty sure Tyrone had their strongest team out. While all counties have absentees at various times I think it is fair to say nobody is missing the number of key players (Comer, Walsh, Silke, Molloy, Rob Finnerty) that we are currently. The gas thing is Maughan spouting Galway are not a top 5 side is laughable. I mean after Kerry and Dublin I cannot think who else could be considered beyond us. Yes Armagh Tyrone, Ros, Mayo are all up there but it strikes me there is some very ill informed opinions among some who should know better. Saying all this I still think we have a bit to do to stay in the Division but I guess we do have a bigger picture in mind. A league final place is only bonus territory really and I don't expect us to be there. Heady days for Connacht football though looking at that table this morning.

Crucial now that the players back up that performance in Donegal next week against a team that is reeling. No McBrearty now, added to the long list of players that left before the year and they have conceded some big scores already. There aren't many teams winning away from home though in Division 1 so it will be a battle.

Don't really want to go into the last game against Kerry needing 2 points to stay up as you can be sure Kerry will be a lot fitter and will have nearly all their big names back starting by then.

Probably need 2 more wins to stay up. That would be 7 points. You'd definitely have to be looking at beating Donegal next weekend as there is a tricky game up in Armagh left as well.

Don't want to rain on the optimism today but Galway did concede the last 4 points of the game quite easily I thought and if there was another minute or so left I wouldn't have been shocked if Tyrone scored a goal to equalise which would have put a whole different gloss on it. My point is that this is something Galway have been doing on a regular basis since last year in the league / championship i.e. relaxing for the last 5 - 10 minutes (or even the last quarter) thinking the job is done until the opposition score sucker goals or a number of points to make it a draw or even snatch a win. Definitely need work on playing for the full 70+ minutes and never ever think the job is done prematurely as games can change very quickly as we all know!
