Former Mayo manager John Maughan thinks Galway "will not push on" this year, was "surprised" by them last year, are "not in the top 4 - 5 teams" in the country and felt the last 2 AI wins were "handy" wins for Kerry and Tyrone (despite Mayo being hot favourites in 2021!) See link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcg2R2awiYM What a shock from John! As his fellow Mayo man John O'Mahony stated in 1998 "there's only one "blanking" answer to that!" tommy k (Galway) - Posts: 3470 - 28/01/2023 09:17:56 2454658 Link 0 |
Ah come on Pope (sorry about your recent demise btw!) I think you know what I mean re Burke and McHugh - they are new players for Joyce's team as they haven't been on the panel (for one reason or another) for a few years now. I think its unfair to drop McHugh completely after a couple of meaningless FBD games where he was "quiet". 5 of the 6 Galway forwards were "quiet" in the AI Final last year when it really mattered but I don't see any of them being dropped!

Wouldn't read into what that lad has to say but you can, to an extent see where he is coming from. We haven't really proved anything yet in all honesty. This is a big year for Joyce's team Donaldtrump (Galway) - Posts: 252 - 28/01/2023 10:52:08 2454675 Link 1 |
Hard see anything but a mayo win hard believe there not a better goalie in a county size of Galway his kickitout are cat bad he can't solo ball he can't catch high ball I've no doubt he. Nice fella but he definitely not a goal keeper,, people say he good shot stopper , he went wrong way for all Armagh pen last year ,, Kickitout (Galway) - Posts: 967 - 28/01/2023 12:17:24 2454695 Link 2 |
I'm disappointed no Dunmore outfield player listed on panel. The shafts had a great year, and produce footballers. It's do or die for Conneely at this level. When the physicality/intensity rachets up, he struggles. This evening will tell a lot. Anyone know when the new jerseys are available. I liked the idea of the Galway hooker print, or a boat on Lough Corrib - men fly fishing. Really (Galway) - Posts: 622 - 28/01/2023 13:48:48 2454720 Link 0 |
Wouldn't agree with Maughan. 11 of yer starting 15 in the final are starting tonight. Big test for McStay and Co. I've the draw backed by many of my fellow Mayo men reckon Galway by 5. Let's see.

You always come on here playing the poor mouth... Mayo at home with 10000 people behind them are slays favourites Belclare (Galway) - Posts: 904 - 28/01/2023 20:59:12 2454815 Link 3 |
Mayo failing to beat handily a team 'not in the top 4 or 5 in the country' will be disappointing to Maughan. Ailteoir (Galway) - Posts: 887 - 28/01/2023 21:19:01 2454823 Link 3 |
Draw a fair result. 8 points very poor return. Only Shane really to come back and the loss of Silke and Molloy is going to make it very difficult for Galway to survive in div 1. 2 of the new lads did very well but a goalmouth calamity or kick out calamity is always on the cards. Hopefully we have a full hand for championship giveitlong (Galway) - Posts: 1258 - 28/01/2023 21:38:08 2454833 Link 1 |
Not the worst result but Galway threw it away there with bad turnovers from Cooke and then Sweeney leading to Mayo's last 2 points. Had Sweeney done anything except kick the ball straight to O'Donoghue there it was game over. Even boot it off the pitch. Probably a bit of inexperience there. Cathal Sweeney is not learning his lesson Belclare (Galway) - Posts: 904 - 29/01/2023 08:33:19 2454842 Link 1 |
If you replay that tape I think you will find it was Tomo that gave away that possession against Monaghan. Sweeney is a young player starting his inter county career he will learn from it. Was at the game last night and overall a decent performance from Galway as a first outing in the league. Lots to work on like a lot of other teams.

It was Tomo who gave the ball away against Monaghan, not Sweeney. A poor mistake last night for sure. The game was won barring kicking the ball back to them. Even booting the ball down the line would have done it. At the same time, we were lucky enough to get a draw based on the game as a whole. Don't agree. Basically played a mayo team who threw absolutely everything at it in front of 13000 fans going mad, brought their aging stars in to try and salvage it late and got at least their fair share of soft calls from the ref. And they were lucky to scrape a draw with last kick against a Galway side who only got the moycullen lads in a week ago, were starting two rookies at cornerback (who did very well) didn't have their superstar forward, and lost their star inside forward after 20 minutes. My take away from all that is I'd rather be us than them today. kazoochka (Galway) - Posts: 344 - 29/01/2023 10:25:49 2454871 Link 1 |
Glad I backed the draw ;)

Pretty sure Paul Conroy is older than any of those "aging stars" from Mayo.

Have to agree with the conclusion. That 'Hall of Fame' sideline team that Mayo have assembled presents such a contrast to the standard of squad that they're 'talking all-irelands' with currently. Looking at Mayo last night, that old Babs term 'donkeys for derbies' did spring into my mind once or twice, I must admit.
