I know he is probably way to young but i thought Gilmore, our minor keeper last year looked exceptional. We did really well off restarts (even in the games we lost) and I think a lot of the credit goes to him. Very short run up (1 or 2 steps) which means he can react quickly to find a player. Also has good distance.

Any news on what's happening in the club management scene. It seemed like a lot of senior clubs were in the hunt for new managers. New season gotta be coming soon. Brandyh (Galway) - Posts: 25 - 03/01/2023 17:56:33 2450999 Link 0 |
He is definitely one for future.Bit young at only 17.

Thats the thing about this new minor grade, they are even further away from senior. It can be very misleading.

Why would Flaherty walk away unless he wanted to try the hurling although no guarantee he'd be in the senior hurling squad?

A lot of those guys were good in the club championship so will be interesting to see how they go. Could to see Ian Burke and McHugh back in Maroon also. Pity the Moycullen lads are missing the chance here, there will definitely be at least five of them pushing for the 26 later in the year.

Doesn't look like there are very many brand new faces this year but obviously quite a few lads back involved that weren't involved last year. Stronger team that I thought we would have out considering the unavailability of the Moycullen lads, one or two from Dunmore, Shane Walsh with Kilmacud and a few others who aren't available at the moment. Not sure, you'd have to ask him. Young lad in college in Limerick, balancing both codes, means lots of mileage. Possibly felt hard done by not getting back into the team last year ahead of our biggest liability.

Shame if he has walked away. The dog on the street knows number 1 is our biggest weak spot. ahsure. (Galway) - Posts: 1633 - 05/01/2023 15:12:33 2451261 Link 0 |
Is Niall Daly part of panel this year? He was a player that I think could push on this year after a promising debut season. Also, you'd wonder how a lad from Clonbur (who didn't get near winning Junior this year) could catch the eye ahead of lads from clubs that were at the business end of the intermediate championship this year. gaillimhboy (Galway) - Posts: 360 - 05/01/2023 15:13:24 2451262 Link 0 |
Because its a team game. If Damian Comer, Sean Kelly or Shane Walsh was playing with Clonbur they may not have won Junior. I've never seen this lad play , but the management should be applauded for extending the net.

Well they cant play any of the Dunmore lads yet and even if you were picking players who were playing towards the end of the intermediate championship, they aren't many to choose from. Maybe Tomas Gleeson, Shane McGrath or a David Prendergast but there was hardly anyone lighting up Intermediate. Probably enough cover in midfield if they are trying out Barrett and Maher there, not sure if Daly is on the panel. No harm in trying someone from junior level if management think they are good enough. He was hardly going to get Clonbur promoted by himself from wing back.

I have no issue with extending the net wide, I'm all for it. I wish the player in question the best of luck. It's just there seems to be lads on the panel that are there because they play ok in senior championship while there are lads excelling at intermediate level and not getting a shot. Surely the net should be extended to these players. gaillimhboy (Galway) - Posts: 360 - 05/01/2023 18:18:02 2451284 Link 1 |
Paul Mannion from Kilconly was definitely worth a look from intermediate. Thought he was very good almost every time I saw him. Marooned (Galway) - Posts: 2304 - 05/01/2023 18:30:04 2451286 Link 0 |
Will be interesting to see how Barrett goes in a. county jersey. galwayman2 (Galway) - Posts: 1291 - 05/01/2023 20:18:58 2451298 Link 0 |
Fair point. But this is the old discussion. We need the net to be as wide as possible but you also need to take into account the standard and the quality of opposition when assessing performance. Playing ok or well at top senior level may be comparable to playing well or excelling at intermediate.... we dont know for sure. Brings back the debate as to the benefits of the Kerry model whereby everyone gets the chance to play senior. To be honest I always thought, until recently, that Kerry's success was despite , rather than because, of this model. But I'm not so sure anymore. anotheralias (Galway) - Posts: 960 - 06/01/2023 10:02:02 2451306 Link 0 |
It should be interesting to see how this team plays but I would have serious reservations about Matt Tierney who is a talented footballer but for the most part played very poorly last year and lacks pace for the top teams like Kerry and Dublin. Anyone else agree? tommy k (Galway) - Posts: 3470 - 06/01/2023 10:10:45 2451307 Link 0 |
Paul Mannion was streets ahead of Niall Daly in influcing games for Kilkonly this year.. Matthew Reddington deserves a shout too.. these lads are as good if not better then the likes of Johnny Henany or Tierney.. Howardhunt1 (Galway) - Posts: 79 - 06/01/2023 11:25:09 2451319 Link 0 |
