Concerned no as they aren't my club but as i Galway born man i like too see Galway sides doing well in the All-Ireland series and Moycullen will know themselves there is room for improvement from what they displayed both the 1st half Sunday and the 60 minutes against Strokestown. @throughthemidfieldhewasstormin need to question what state of mind and body Westport was in for that quarter final. Pushed by the pin of their collar by Strokestown. Tourlestrane on the other hand were never going to keep that high energy game going for 60 mins. Ulster champions will be a step up next and will go into as underdogs which i think the Moycullen lads won't mind. Yondu (UK) - Posts: 845 - 05/12/2022 17:58:13 2449596 Link 2 |
They were similar enough in the Galway championship. They weren't overly impressive in a couple of the group games they were expected to win comfortably, but then turned in their biggest performances against the stronger teams. They're a team on their first run outside the county. They don't have the experience yet of knowing how to deal with being strong favourites in games of this magnitude. They were excellent against Mountbellew and Westport, games that were expected to be very tight. For that reason, I think they're in a good space for the meeting with the Ulster champions. If it's Kilcoo, you'd imagine Moycullen will be underdogs. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2223 - 05/12/2022 18:12:45 2449597 Link 2 |
I thought you were from Roscommon!

Yes they are a good team but are in no way as incisive and potent with quick, accurate kick passes into the forwards as for example Corofin were 3 - 4 years ago. They seem very slow and ponderous in the build-up but maybe I am looking at it with Corofin tinted glasses on!

I think corofin of old and current moycullen have slightly different styles Corofin early ball and slick interplay. Moycullen strong quick running in groups. Both teams were/are very effective against teams that try to go toe to toe with them. But can struggle against decent teams who set up defensively e.g kilcoo in normal time of last corifin AI Moycullen on a few occasions this year.

They play a different style to Corofin for sure. They don't seem to look for the early ball inside to the full forward line with a runner steaming through off the shoulder. They play more of a running possession game. galwayman2 (Galway) - Posts: 1291 - 07/12/2022 09:48:33 2449717 Link 0 |
Yes but that constant running, passing game without any kick passes can be very tiring in tough / tight games. Corofin in the club game and Kerry / Dublin in intercounty can mix it up with the kick passes which makes it much easier to physically last much longer without running out of steam.

They're playing to their strengths. The likes of the Kellys, Cooke and Gallagher are brilliant ball carriers, strong, direct and can score. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2223 - 07/12/2022 11:31:56 2449736 Link 0 |
That would be one way of describing it I suppose. I've seen them a good few times over the past few years and in fairness they can be a hard watch at times with a lot of handpassing. They actually score a good percentage of goals without kicking the ball at all. However it obviously works for them and more power to them

From a Galway point of view I was slightly disappointed with Cookes display last Sunday. I thought that he played on the periphery of the action a lot without really getting involved. I know he kicked a few good points near the end but he never injected any urgency into his game. I know that Tourlestrane are hard to play against with the way they set up but at least it was a good dry run for Moycullen if Kilcoo are to be their next opponents as that is the way they set up also. seventyniner (Galway) - Posts: 41 - 07/12/2022 21:19:41 2449801 Link 1 |
Agreed re Gallagher. Thought he was excellent again the last day.

Agree. He is a real battering ram and very good at carrying the ball through the lines and laying it off. Can kick a score too. Hope Moycullens extended run doesnt mean he doesnt see much league time. Would love to see him in maroon a bit more, doing the unseen donkey work for Comer, Shaney and Rob.

Gallagher got a good bit of game time in the FBD and up to about half way in the league. He just stopped being used much after that. I couldn't figure it out as he usually played quite well. Just seemed to fall out of favour. If there is one criticism of the management last year it's that they seemed to lose faith in all their subs bar O'Laoi.

Owen Gallagher clearly better in possession, a better fielder and a lot more comfortable in front of the posts then O'Laoi. Must be something in the stats that isn't obvious to us as from the obvious attributes Gallagher is a better footballer. Paul Kelly another footballer who plays a similar role to O'Laoi who is a better footballer. TheBishop (Galway) - Posts: 287 - 09/12/2022 10:20:47 2449919 Link 2 |
Eoghan Kelly probably a good bet to get a run as well but Moycullen players might get the first few league games off. Depending on their progress.

Lets not forget Moycullen drew with Litir Mor and came close to being bet to a very poor Strokestown team. The going has yet to get tough for them, Ulster champions will be a massive test for them and will really tell us where they are at. While Ulster champions will be a test which i think Moycullen will take that challenge head on i should point out very poor teams don't win our county championship nowadays and the Strokestown team is filled with lads that represented Roscommon at Minor, U20/21 and senior winning provincial honours.

Does anyone here think Corofin have another run left in them next year or are they DONE as far as County and All Ireland honors go? Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 2282 - 09/12/2022 19:39:17 2449999 Link 0 |
