In English soccer, 'success' doesn't seem to be measured in trophies alone these days. Just qualifying for, and competing in Champions league is now called 'success' also, so what you're stating as 'fact' there about the level of 'success' in a club isn't fact at all. It's just your opinion perhaps. It's a fact, Spurs haven't won a trophy, but it may not be a fact that they aren't as successful in the last 30 years as Wigan, because of CL qualifications, Premier League prize money etc.

Of course it's my opinion Pope I posted it! No perhaps about it!!! But in years to come when people look back at that 30 year period, premier league prize money and champions league qualification won't be listed on Wikipedia or whatever is about at that time. But there will be lists of premier league and FA Cup winners. Wigan will be on one of those lists for that period. Spurs won't be. There are still more meaningful guages of success than how much money was made,

Enough of this nonsense. Wigan are in League 1. They will star the 2023-24 League One season with minus eight points. They won their only major trophy in their history 2013, the FA,Cup.
By the way, you're wrong about Spurs winning '#### all' in the last 30 years, they've won the League Cup twice, in 1999 and 2008.

Lets call a spade a spade. A "Galway man" putting down his own county is not a Galway man. He is an anti-Galway man."
Unfortunately there are still too many naysayers in the county and unsurprisingly surface when we lose. The 1980 AI winning team who made the breakthrough by winning the 1975 league final had to endure a huge amount of negativity down through the years, being told they'd never win an AI, weren't good enough, were cursed etc. Clare had to endure the same negativity from their own supporters. I recently heard one of those Galway players saying that after losing the 1979 final against KK that Pat Henderson came to him after the game and gave him great encouragement, saying to keep going, that they had the hurlers and would soon win an All Ireland. Fair play to Henderson, a true sportsman and fair play to John Connolly and the other courageous hurlers who kept it going through those barren years.

We are talking the premium competitions CC. FA Cup and League Championship. The English League Cup is for most clubs 2nd teams.
That would be like saying Wexford have been great the last 28 years because they won a few Walsh Cups.

Them Hurlers sowed the seeds for a lot of Galways successes in all levels to this day. That Castlegar team of that era deserves special mention too.

To have any chance of winning an AI a team needs at least a good proportion of the 5 "S"s i.e. Size, Strength, Speed, Stamina and Skill. Re Galway hurlers and footballers whatever about Skill which the players undoubtedly have, I feel most of them are inadequate in the other 4. Not sure if this is just down to S&C but these need to be improved dramatically for the 2024 season no doubt.

You're right for sure. Limerick have shown they have it all in abundance. What a team.

After watching that final it looks like the formbook worked out accurately. Only a point between Kilkenny and Galway over the 2 matches in Leinster while both sides got trimmed by 9 by the very worthy champions, Kilkenny stayed in the match longer than we did and like us had chances to be further ahead but it was all one way traffic once Limerick put on the after burners. Can they be the first hurling team to do the 5 in a row? Sets it up nicely for next year.

And that accurate assessment of yours, bizarrely equated to a 5-1 KK-Galway inclusion on the SG 'Team of the Year'. What we're effectively being asked to swallow here, is that Mannion's 'flykickgate' and Buckley's resultant goal, that one singular farcical moment, cost Galway anything up to 4 all-stars and simultaneously won KK 4 all-stars. Very very silly stuff. Either Galway need more representation on that team, or TJ and Butler will have to be 'dropped'. 3-1 still isn't an accurate reflection of KK-Galway standards 2023, but 5-1 is an outrageous farce altogether.

If you don't have skill you can forget about the rest.

Lovely point. I was playing secondary school hurling around the city in the mid-80s and if you heard the other team had a Castlegar lad you'd be worried. Thank God we had two! Hon' Endas'!

It is "interesting" how much fitter Limerick seem than every other team in the country…

Yes but the popular narrative by the media (especially the Munster ones) is that Galway "collapsed" in the semifinal whereas KK "kept going bravely to the bitter end" even though both games were exactly the same even down to the final total scores on each side, the margin of victory and pattern of play in each half. Go figure! lol

A few in this thread who questioned the Galway players commitment, Henry's ability to do his job etc should be eating some crow this morning

Galway have a good team and good management with a group of tight knit and committed hurlers.

They have the misfortune of playing in the same era as the greatest team, backroom team and sponsor to ever live. It is really a perfect storm, but it won't go on forever

Until then, how about appreciate the commitment and talent of our hurlers

Even with having the 5 Ss, you still need to be coached properly, and that Limerick Team are just the best coached outfit I have ever seen. On a good day such as the second half yesterday they are just flawless, everything working as one, and they are just basically untouchable. I honestly hope that there isn't another crop of great Limerick hurlers coming down the line, as with the systems they have in place, they could easily dominate hurling for as long as they wish.

In fairness Tommy, Limerick were much more impressive in the second half yesterday than they were in the second half against us. We were very impressive against Limerick for 25 mins, but when Limerick started rolling through the gears, we had no answer. Yesterday in the second half particularly after Paddy Deegan's goal, they turned on the after-burners, and it was a sight to behold. They would have beaten us by 20 points had they played like that in the semi final, and while I'm not questioning Galway's belief, we are nowhere near Limerick and won't ever be unless the County Board get their heads of their backsides!!

I played schools myself in mid to late 1980s, and the amount of excellent hurlers from Meelick Eyrecourt came to school where I went in Offaly, these lads were making Offaly Vocational schools team with the likes of John Troy and Hubert Rigney and more future Offaly stars, yet once these Meelick Eyrecourt lads went back to their clubs that was it, the majority never got a look in at minor level which amazed us in Offaly....Liam Hogan and mabye Damien Howe were two that got decent stints...Noel Larkin did hurl with Galway seniors abit...Galway had oodles of talent elsewhere as we knew, but it was thought that the Meelick Eyrecourt lads were just outside the hurling strongholds to be considered...some massive talent never seen minor or underage with Galway despite sucess with Offalyy schools/county etc...

Well said, Kinvara and I totally agree. Galway are behind Limerick as is every team right now (it won't last forever), are a match for Kilkenny, and are probably neck and neck also with Clare. They showed that they're a good bit ahead of Tipp, and with that what other teams that are left.

But like every team they have to keep working harder on improving themselves, which is why I would not go getting rid of Henry now, as many loud vessels on here want. Lim him and his management and the players to get on with it. Switching managers midstream is rarely a good idea and only unsettles players.
