I agree with you. I love Niland but he's AT LEAST 2 or 3 years away from a possible Senior spot and that's IF he does as you say and puts on some strength. He might be a nice little sub off the bench to bring in late in matches when some of the bigger stronger guys are tired.

When you look at the age profile of both teams it's no wonder Cork had a huge physical advantage: it was literally boys against men in quite a few positions.

Gunning's awareness is eyecatching but he does have a tendency to hit the floor when he carries the ball into any kind of contact and win his frees, which is fair enough in itself at this point but you won't get away with that at the adult grades. Still, plenty of time for him to work on that.

Hegarty looks the business though, unspectacular but very solid in the 6 position.

All players out of minor need S&C and it can't be rushed, even those on programmes from earlier in their teenage years can't overload or short cut, it's why Cork are still hanging their hats on the Lehanes and Harnedys of their world instead of introducing some of their U20 winning sides of recent vintage. They just havent got the power needed to impose on the game.

this is the reason we should be getting in lads at minor level who are at least 6 foot 2. and push for lads over 6 foot 5. get them to hurl and wel be onto something. A lot easier to train big lads to hurl than it is to get small lads strong...

Theres some obsession over the years on big tall lads from the Galway posters.

Id say the opposite is true. You cant turn anyone into a Joe Canning or an Eoin Kelly but you can def add bulk to most players. The best talent should be nurtured and not cherry big bigger players and end up with a team of "manufactured hurlers". Completely the wrong road to go down in my opinion.

I don't think that's the case at all. Focusing mainly on big players at underage will result in some of the better hurlers slipping through the net. There's also the fact that a lot of lads mature physically at different ages.
To be honest, I think it would be an awful approach. Just as well Limerick weren't doing it when Sean Finn and Cian Lynch were coming through at underage.

This isn't a particularly 'rated' Galway side at this stage of their development. They're dining out on 'living with' Limerick in 2020 and 2022, when other 'BIG9' hurling counties were generally being slaughtered by the Shannonsiders.

Galway's record v KK in round robin games is good. Galway's record v KK in Leinster Finals is not so good. This isn't a great KK team, and it's not a great Galway team either, unless one or both of these sides is about to kick it up a few gears for what's left of championship 2023.

I remember speaking to a ex galway player and his idea was that galway needed to be six points better than kilkenny to beat them by a point just showing our inferiority complex

Think the opposite is try to be honest.

Height is one thing.

I've always believed there's no substitute for a lad born with a hurl in his had. The hurl is an extension of the body to the purest.

Anyone can get big in a gym with the right diet

The 2020 final being a very good example of this. We had far more scoring chances in that game and had the better of general play. The two quickfire goals proved our undoing in the end.
