Clare much better than Galway in the first half of the Minor All Ireland. Galway keep giving the ball away. Clare were far sharper. The two great goals are what's keeping us in it so far. Nilands frees too. Galway Abu. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 2282 - 04/06/2023 13:35:19 2483899 Link 0 |
Only 1pt down at half time....they take off our Centre Back and now 7pts down!!! katser (Galway) - Posts: 2481 - 04/06/2023 13:57:17 2483902 Link 1 |
Unfortunately the ref done the classic thing in a minor game of not wanting to send off a young lad but Hegarty had to go. Two cyclical fouls and he bottled the second decision. Our lads not playing well enough anyway. galway19 (Galway) - Posts: 806 - 04/06/2023 14:01:53 2483904 Link 1 |
With young lads it's hard to get away from the hype, but Clare were fantastic. ahsure. (Galway) - Posts: 1633 - 04/06/2023 14:20:29 2483909 Link 3 |
Congratulations Clare. Gutted for this great young Galway team. Hard luck Galway and thanks for the great season. Next year hopefully. Sigh. Trump2020 (Galway) - Posts: 2282 - 04/06/2023 14:22:23 2483910 Link 1 |

I've been very impressed by Clare all year, they were the better team and looked more of a team..Galway depended on rabbitte and niland..it's a pity for Galway but even some posters were saying it was going to be handy..selectors also should be staying away from press and putting more pressure on young fellas.. Congratulations to Clare, nothing fancy or silly short passing just pure direct old fashioned gutsy hurling. They ran straight through the heart of our defence once the management decided at half time to take off our no 6! katser (Galway) - Posts: 2481 - 04/06/2023 14:33:59 2483914 Link 3 |
A very well deserved win for Clare. They performed far better on the day. The Galway lads looked nervy from the start. Struggled with the first touch, tried passes which weren't on, fumbled the ball and hit some bad wides. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2223 - 04/06/2023 15:34:24 2483926 Link 1 |
Not wanting to send of a young lad? The ref in last week's minor semi-final between Kilkenny and Clare sent of a Kilkenny 'young lad' after about 6 minutes of the game starting. The general consensus was that it was a harsh decision. His shoulder made contact with the Clare player's head, not intentional, just bad timing. What irritated me was. I've seen several similar challenges, and worse, in senior games this year, but not once was a red card given.

Hard luck to the young lads but the Clare backs were excellent and they deserved the win. PancakeWard (Galway) - Posts: 86 - 04/06/2023 15:51:29 2483934 Link 1 |
Yes I felt today we wanted it more and that's the reason we won. Galway were a bit rudderless in the first half. It looked like they they didn't think Clare would be as good as they are. I am very proud of our lads. First minor in 26 years. 2 years after losing to Cork by 40 points in Munster when our hurling future looked bleak. Goes to show, if you get the right lads in charge you can turn things around quite quickly. Looking forward to hearing from Skehill tomorrow. It's a mighty turnaround from that beating by Cork. Some of these lads might be the eventual replacements for Tony Kelly, Conlon, Shane O'Donnell, etc.

You were right. A five point margin is only pretty close. Overall, I feel that the minor grade is no longer any way of a good indicator of what lads might rise to after, particularly since CP reduced the age to 17. Galway has won tons of them, yet what have those minors gone on to do at senior level? Perhaps, and words like mine would be of poor consolation this evening to a 16-17 kid who just lost an AI final, this defeat will make better men of these young Galway lads, going forward. At times, we learn more from defeat than victory. Did the great Gerry Mac of the 1987/88 double for example, ever even play underage? This Galway team was too highly vaunted. It reminded me of the Cork senior team of 1982 and 'Baby Jesus-Tony O'Sullivan'. They'd swept through Munster and all they had to do was pick up the cup when they got to CP for the final. Kilkenny hadn't read that same script however, in particular Frank Cummins hadn't. But Baby Tony did go onto win 3 AI medals afterwards (1984/86/1990). I know that the game and times are different, but if any of those Galway minors who fell down today, pick themselves back up like O'Sullivan and go onto win 3 AI senior medals, then I think the whole county of Galway would be proud: even the Pope, the Katser, and the Baire! foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 2118 - 04/06/2023 20:33:30 2484024 Link 3 |
Minor Final.......I think we saw from both finals today that the form from Leinster u17 and u20 was not close to the standard from Munster and we saw 2 surprisingly one sided games. They're only young lads and hopefully they (and the management) can learn a lot from today. conordee (Galway) - Posts: 450 - 04/06/2023 21:16:57 2484041 Link 1 |
No we didn't. That Galway minor team is a really good team. They didnt play well today and got beaten but these things happen especially at minor level.

This is probably an example of the attitude the crept into the squad and resulted in todays performance by Galway.

Don't forget Galway beat Cork in the semis. Clare were better than Galway today but I wouldn't over analyze it.

I agree with the sentiment of your post. However, Gerry Mac was in fact a star at underage. He was on the 1983 minor team that won Galway's first ever all-Ireland in the grade and I think he won man-of-the-match in the final. That team also included Joe Cooney, Anthony Cunningham, Pat Malone and John Commins and much the same team won the under-21 title in 1986. So at least that particular group of players definitely delivered on their potential.
