A leftfield question. Your minors have been a mighty size any time I've seen them over that time. But your u20/1s less so. Why might that be?

I wouldn't agree that Galway's minors have been generally a 'mighty size'. Same size as KK usually. It's gas how some Southern hurling people find it very hard to acknowledge that Galway can be more skillful, in any hurling age group, than say 'the big 3', or other southern hurling strongholds. They can be bigger, they can be stronger, they can be faster, they can be 'more physical', but no, we rarely rarely get accused of being more skillful than traditional opposition, even at Minor level, a grade that dare I say, we've been the 'premier force' for over 30 years at this point. We've had a couple of big minor sides, like 2009 and 2011, when the likes of Daithi Burke, Niall Burke, Joe Cooney and latterly Jonny Glynn came on the scene. All won in 2017 too.

Generally I'd put skill, speed and preparation ahead of 'mighty size', if I was assessing why Galway have been so successful at u17/u18 for 30 years. Other counties match and surpass Galway's preparation at u21 level for the last decade and more. Imo, no county was consistently matching Galway's minor preparation 1992-2020. That's the only explanation really, once you rule out the notion that we've failed miserably to bring minor talent onto u21 and senior level.

Not being smart but you are blessed with so many good hurling clubs in Galway you would need some size of a panel for there to be a player from every one of them on a minor panel in any given year, considering in any given year there's always good underage agegroups in a few clubs, usually different clubs each year or couple of years, that drive eachother on to get better. In these age groups these clubs could have 3 or 4 players each on the minor team when they are that age. Maybe more.

In particular we beat the Kilkenny minor team in 2019 in the Leinster final. They were a little bigger than us but tbh most teams we play underage usually are. We then played yourselves and your lads were like white versions of yer man on the sides of the tins of sweetcorn compared to ours.
Last year we lost by a point to the same Kilkenny lads in the Leinster u20 final who were maybe a little bigger than us still, but not much in it. They had beaten your lads in a game where the 2 teams were pretty much the same size, except perhaps the best player on the pitch, Liam Collins.

You are always skilful hurlers, at any level, club hurling I've seen, right up to intercounty. But any underage games I've seen up to minor this millennium your lads were much bigger than our lads. Now granted every other county usually would be bigger than us too, but your lads looked really huge altogether.
But not to the same extent at u20/1.

Whats this.....None from the mighty Meelick-Eyrecourt....that's a disgrace or the beloved Tommy Larkins or Tynagh Abbey-Duniry....... Silk, Farrell or Mattie won't be happy about this!!!!!

As I stated in an earlier post.... galway produce minor players... the others are interested in trying to produce senior players.... A big difference.

Shows you what Pres Athenry were up against last week when you see the Kilkenny minor team playing today. None of the Kieran's main players are on the panel because they are on the u20 panel. Murphy, Doyle, Dunne, Shine etc. are all 19 playing against what was effectively an U17 team. It was just an exceptional schools team.

Nice win for Wexford minors too. Maybe it would've been better for the Kerry lads to have been in tier 2. That kind of result can't do them any good.

Yeah I was surprised at that and I was surprised to see Dublin beat Offaly by so much. Thought it would be closer. I wonder will the TEIR 2 Winner move up to TEIR 1 next year?!?
