Yes KK are very good at emerging from rucks and tussles for the ball on the ground. Definitely agree with that!

Still remember Eoin Quigleys point like it was yesterday!

Replying To tommy k:  "Very good post and another bugbear of mine (along with thrown passes that are allowed) is how light the sliotar is that points can now be scored from 100 to 120 metres out on a fairly regular basis. When I was watching hurling in the 70's / 80's / 90's / 00's the sliotar could barely be pucked past 70 metres and there would be tussles for the ball, ground hurling etc. which made for more exciting games. Now it has become too robotic and systematic with the lightness of the sliotar contributing to that to a large degree."
The weight, or otherwise, of the sliothar hasn't altered much.

The ball wasn't pucked far past 70m back in the day because the balls were different but mainly due to the physical profile of players.
If you put a player from the '90's into a team playing today, using the same training/diet regimen as back then, he wouldn't last too long, he'd be physically worn down before too long.

I'd suggest a better solution would be to make the ball (slightly) bigger, rather than heavier - making it heavier would potentially make it dangerous for goalkeepers. A slightly bigger ball would be more at the mercy of the wind, and certainly in the initial stages there would probably be an amount of dropped catches leading to more 'tussles for the ball'

But after a while the players would adapt of course, in reality the typical modern player has few peers in the game's history. The game itself in terms of skill has never been better, though you couldn't necessarily say the same on the entertainment front.

Ground hurling is gone, never to return, retaining possession is king. You can rest assured that people lamenting the loss of ground hurling from the game don't want to see their defenders aimlessly pulling on a ball and hitting it straight to an opponent, anywhere from 80 yards out now and that's almost a guaranteed score conceded.

Strange how the team that can't hurl, according to you my pesky piscín, came closest to beating ye in last year's championship and the one ye are most worried about this year!

Fair points but in an earlier post I pointed out that I wished hurlers of all teams would pull on the ball rather than trying to rise the ball WHEN IN A BIG CROWD OF OTHER HURLERS. Now I know this is not always realistic but I've gone numerous matches without seeing ANYONE pull on the ball. Just an observation.

What is this thing called DECORUM, he refers to ???. Is it a form of Halitosis? I have travelled to games all over this Land and I never heard that word once.

Suppose it's the sort of word you would here in a limerick, rather than in Limerick. Or anywhere else!

If you have to ask what it is, Limerickman, you haven't got it!

Very good Baire, and I agree it was a somewhat rustic attempt at wit. There is a Landmark just outside Newcastle West, called the Crooked Tree and many decades ago, during the Land Ward War, a Lady of Quality, from down around the City, said 'Civilisation finishes at the Crooked Tree'. Many of us are still very proud to have been born at the RIGHT side of the Crooked Tree.

I met the poet Michael Hartnett at a festival once. He grew up in Newcastle West, wrote in both Irish and English, a gentle and humorous soul. Anyway, I'm going to take a break from this nonsense for now.

Should be a good one. I'd love to be in Ennis for it. Sigh.

Michael has a lovely sculpture to him in the Square in NCW, if you are ever going to Kerry it is just a few yards off the route and maybe be worth a call. Michael died a few years back.
Anyway Good bye for now and as they say, a little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.
