Ciarán Mcdonald What Next?

(Oldest Posts First)

Surely Ciarán McDonald is an inter-county Manager in waiting, but which County will it be?

Don't know the chap at all but it seems to me an inter county job is the last place he'd want to be.
Rarely gives interviews, we didn't really see him at all at a national level until the Mayo gig.
Coaching maybe as part of a team but not as an inter county manager in my opinion.

Nowhere other than Mayo I would say and only in a coaching capacity.

He would have done better at number 11 for Mayo in the All Ireland final than the passenger they had on playing imo.
Not sure he's management material though, seen him on 2nd Captains I think it was one time, seems a nice fella and one of the best players I ever seen as well. Maybe he could do a job in Leitrim if he's interested, he'd certainly get the media attention.

Please share the reasons why you're so confident that he will become an inter-county manager?

Maybe he should start by coaching Mayo players to kick points from 30/40 m and hit penalties . If that's been part of his job for the last 2 years then he's failed .

Lots of great player related qualities alright. I think you have outlined why he's much admired throughout the Country.

Maybe the next step is to make an impact at club or underage as a manager?

I'm afraid that kind of old school thinking went out with the last century, "serving your time" is/was a great way to build up to Senior Inter County Management but none of the under performing Counties give a hoot who you coached as long as you've played to the highest level, Galway being a case in point

Maybe something to reflect on for the under performing Counties. Playing and management are two very different skillsets..

Simple logic says any County that doesn't win either Sam or Liam has underperformed in that code so it's a very wide market for ex players who have little or no management experience in Clubs let alone at County level.
