Hi everyone
Yesterday saw the launch of a fundraising drive for a monument to a true GAA icon, centre-half back on the Gaelic Football Team of the Millennium, Cavan's John Joe O'Reilly. The plan is to unveil it in time for the 75th anniversary of the famous Polo Grounds final victory next year. 2022 is also the 70th annniversary of John Joe's premature passing at the age of 34, weeks after surgery for a kidney issue, leaving behind 4 kids aged 9 and under.
A born leader, John Joe transcended county boundaries and was revered nationally during his short life, rising to the role of Commandant in the Irish Army by the age of 27. His Polo Grounds team-mate John Wilson (future Tanaiste) always maintained that had John Joe lived he would undoubtedly have risen to become Chief of Staff for our Defence Forces.
I know in Cavan we are often accused of forever looking back rather than forward but this is something that should have been done long ago. He is someone of whom not just Cavan natives but all Irish people can be proud. All support would be greatly appreciated! And before the jokes start, yes, we probably could be fundraising in an easier county.. :)

Wexford a great example of a successful GAA Sculpture, Nicky Rackard's in Wexford Town is superb. All things considered, we haven't many GAA monuments in Ireland, John Joe's will be the first in Ulster I believe. Have I missed any below folks?

There is a lovely 'headstone' like, complete with Celtic cross, monument to the Wexford 1910 hurling team in the chapel yard in Castle Bridge, the the then spiritual heartland of Wexford Hurling.

There is a massive monument in Two Mile Borris in Tipp commemorating the Tubberadora team of the late 1890s.

A plaque was unveiled at Cornafean's grounds in November of 1999 I believe following John Joe's selection on the Team of the Millennium.

Thanks for that guys. John Joe was honoured in song, and on stage in the past. He was one of Cavan's greats, pity he passed away at a young age.

And the same area that the Blues and Whites who represented Wexford in the countys 1st appearance in an all Ireland football final, in 1890, were from.

If you google Mooncoingaa you will see a photo of the unveiling of a magnificent statue to Richard "Drug" Walsh,the only KK man to captain 3 AI winning teams,in the photo with the GAA preisdent is the sculptor Seamus Connolly who is sculpting the statue of John Joe,I was down there Saturday and it is a really magnificent statue,I have no doubt that the statue of John Joe will do him proud.
