"You Have Seen....." is what you meant, I'm sure. Aibrean (Kerry) - Posts: 263 - 09/09/2021 12:37:32 2379038 Link 0 |
I've seen clips of Skehan and some of the goals he let in would leave him a long way off being the greatest in my opinion. I said it a few years ago that Eoin Murphy was the best I've ever seen but I do think his form has dropped the last couple of seasons - despite many claiming he will be this years all star. However, for me I'd have him at number 1. tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 09/09/2021 12:46:43 2379042 Link 0 |
1-Fitzhenry. 2-Cusack. 3-Murphy. 4- Cummins. 5- Fitzgerald. Quaid, Nash, Mcgarry all honourable mentions. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 12053 - 09/09/2021 13:29:20 2379060 Link 0 |
COULD OF is another shocking one. It's "could've".

Ollie was certainly the most spectacular and the most flamboyant. He was absolutely outstanding in the 1967 win over Tipperary despite picking up a nasty wrist injury the day before on the train to Dublin. I believe he was equally brilliant in the drawn 1959 final against Waterford. However, he didn't always shine on the big day. It's hard to believe that in three finals - 1963, 1964 and 1971 - he conceded a total of 16 goals! Of course he was blameless for most of those goals but he certainly could have done better with some of them, especially in the '71 final against Tipperary. Some would maintain that Noel Skehan was a better goalie but he didn't have a great start, conceding five against Cork in 1972, at least one of which was down to a bad mistake on his part. On balance I would say Ollie was better than Skehan but for consistent brilliance I would rate Eoin Murphy higher than either of them.

A goalkeeper has no one to cover if he or she, makes an error in a match. All keepers can have an off day, but you can be remembered for the mistakes, rather than the good saves. Thing is, move on and focus on the next game. The role of a number one, has changed over the years, today's keepers are free takers, and their kick outs,/ puck outs are an element of team tactics on match day. It's not just GAA people in fairness, bad grammar and spelling are (is?) everywhere, what embarrasses me as a gaa man is listening to players/managers say "I suppose" and "dya know" multiple times per sentence.

Brian Mullins of Birr playing Senior club hurling for 25 years, not just longevity but a magnificent keeper, rarely makes mistakes, fabulous shot stopper, Murphy, Fitzhenry, Cusack three brilliant keepers but Mullins definitely a contender. Obviously completely under the radar for most hurling supporters but Paul Dermody for Kildare up to 5/6 years ago was a class act. One of the best shot stoppers you'll see and very quick off the line. SallinsMan (Kildare) - Posts: 77 - 10/09/2021 09:22:42 2379238 Link 1 |
You are easily embarrassed. Giving a radio or television interview is I would imagine not as easy as you might think.

goals back then were goal mouth scrambles alot and you would be ate in the square during such a scramle..the ball often poked in one handed..they may have looked bad on reflection but a differnt type of hurling when hurls were broke and the ball was about a pound in weight nearly...not like the ping pong used now...

He has been a bit dodgy at times on frees in the past, but Niall Morgan was perfect today. HokeyPokey (Tyrone) - Posts: 1744 - 11/09/2021 21:11:58 2379773 Link 1 |
He was. Contributed hugely to Tyrone winning, both defensively and in attack! And not a hint of the jitters he had shown in other big games. His mixing of kick outs was excellent too. Some of the long balls that turned into possession up the field for Tyrone in second half were possibly the winning of the game. Best goalkeeping performance in a year since Cluxton at his best. Would be my MOTM I think. BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 2584 - 11/09/2021 21:18:42 2379776 Link 2 |
He was top class, some performance from him.
