Fair enough. The only reasons I was asking is because he and Davy were successful before though it was at the Universities Level, and maybe Canning didn't enjoy playing under O'Neill. Again I say MAYBE he didn't like playing under him. I'm 95% sure you are right and Canning will NOT play for the county ever again but stranger things have happened.

Canning knows that there's going to be nothing in Galway for about 3 years. That's why he retired almost as soon as the final whistle was blown. Galway need a Galway man at the helm. The top counties have no outsider in charge. Limk has Kiely. KK has Cody. Tipp has Bonnar. Clare has Lohan. And Cork has Kingston. Galway has won the AI hurling a handful of times. 5, is it? And it was a Galway man who managed them each time, not an outsider. Surely there is one person (ye could even pick a woman) within the county that's up to the job? Pick the right person now, and McCarthy might be back in Galway in 3 years time. Those good minors would all be 20-25 years old then, and should be in their prime, just like Limerick are now and have been over the past 3 years. foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 1932 - 10/09/2021 07:14:47 2379224 Link 0 |
Populations arent a true reflection though. Theres probaably somewhere in the region of 10-15% of all club players (non-Dubs) living in Dublin for example. At a wild guess.

Anybody who thinks Canning is finished as a hurler can watch Portumna v Ballindeeren SHC (beo streaming it live) this weekend in the Galway Club Championship. Canning will most likely win that match on his own for Portumna!! Also why haven't the hurling board sorted out our new Galway Manager (Davy) so that he can view all the hurlers we have with the Galway Club Championship starting this Weekend! katser (Galway) - Posts: 2229 - 10/09/2021 13:30:58 2379336 Link 1 |
Beo's coverage was excellent last weekend, what day/time is that portunna game?

Yes indeed, after three All Ireland winning Managers, Keating, Loughnane and O'Neill albeit club, have all failed abysmally Corribside why would you employ another outside manager. They will sensibly bring back Michael Donoghue, a man with a great past record and a long term vision for Galway Hurling.

A part from the fact that I got that one totally right about Bonnar with Tipp (so obvious), the other issue that no one seems to have been mentioning is Mick Fennelly. He's doing a great job in Offaly, but I'm sure as hell that Wexford have courted him. He'd be beyond Wexford wildest dreams as a hurling man. Remember Wexford went for Davy Fitz! foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 1932 - 10/09/2021 16:03:23 2379388 Link 0 |
The next time a Canning plays for Galway it will probably be Jack. As regards Davy, the last time he faced Micheál Donoghue in Leinster, he lost! Give me Donoghue any day, no histrionics or play acting, an ex-player with Galway's interest at heart. Davy is good but wouldn't be a good fit for Galway.

Apparently with work and family commitments he doesnt want to come back. That according to Skehill.

It's going a bit far to say he's doing a great job with them. Imo he took the job thinking they'd walk the League and Christy Ring last year. So much so he was still playing club hurling when he was Offaly manager. oneoff (UK) - Posts: 1380 - 10/09/2021 18:11:50 2379426 Link 0 |
How many Leinster, Munster, League and All Ireland championships have you won as a manager? Fitzgibbon cups? Club championships? Or Mick Fennelly? How many Munster and All Ireland championships did you win as a player? Mick Fennelly was a great player. I saw him live dozens of times. But hes only starting out as a manager. Hes 15 odd years behind Davy. He might turn out to be the next Brian Cody but even he would admit hes a long way off that yet. Why would we have been courting him as a manager?

You are new to the game? Werent around in 2019? Last time Davy faced Michael it was a draw in Salthill. We went on to win Leinster and you didnt even get out of the Round Robin.

I agree Donoghue would be a far better fit for you though. Davy is an excellent manager his record speaks for itself. Noone has won all the titles he has won as a manager before in the history of hurling. But Donoghue is a Galway man.

I'm a total novice! Yes Galway and Wexford drew in Salthill but Donoghue won twice against Davy in the Leinster championship, one of them a Leinster final. Did Davy defeat Donoghue's team? I'd argue that that particular Galway team were at their strongest betweem 2012-17. I agree that Davy brought a spark and belief into Wexford hurling and were unlucky against Tipp as were Galway in 2016.

My preference is Davy....he would Definitely bring a "different " approach to our set up and it would be interesting to see how our lads would react to his methods! But I've good time for Donoghue and would be happy with him if"Davy " doesn't get it. Davy Fitz or Mick Donoghue is Win Win for me. katser (Galway) - Posts: 2229 - 10/09/2021 20:15:19 2379464 Link 1 |
On another note Katser - do you still want that autographed Limerick jersey?!

Give it up, you've won it, enjoy the win without rubbing it in! Am I expecting too much?
