Liam "Chunky" O'Brien RIP

(Oldest Posts First)

Sad to hear of the passing of former James Stephens and Kilkenny hurler Chunky O'Brien at 71.

Formed a famous midfield partnership for Kilkenny with Frank Cummins in the mid-70s and won 4 All - Irelands and 4 All - Stars. Was noted for his reading of the game, intelligent use of the ball and his ball-hop solo runs. Won 2 All Ireland club titles with James Stephens in the 70s too.

Condolences to all Chunky's family and friends at this time. RIP.

One of the truly greats. A mid field maestro. It was a pleasure to have seen him play. R.I.P.

A class player who would have adorned any team in any era. One of the best midfielders I've seen. RIP.

RIP Liam O'Brien! A great hurler in a great midfield partnership with Frank Cummins during in the 1970's.

He used to call into my uncle's pub when he was in Dublin in the 80s and 90s. Nice man and had great yarns about his playing days.

I got to know Liam from his trips to Offaly with the Smithwicks lorry and Birr in particular. A nice man and a great hurling chat every week was had, I was a bit young when he actually hurled, I was 9 when he retired, but I did see him on All Ireland Gold a few times and what a player he was, I dont care what anyone says they just dont play the game like that any more and hurling is all the poorer for it. RIP to his family and may he RIP, I am lucky enough to say I knew and had manys the chat with Liam. Gone, but not forgotten.
