Had to be Limerick yesterday and especially in the first half. Result was never in doubt and some scoreline. A record number of scores I am told and a record number of All Stars on the way to Shannonside. There is nobody around capable of stopping that three in a row next summer. They deserve to be hot favorites but it's a long way off and injuries happen and so do upsets. Will they be as hungry next summer?

Limerick next for splitting in 2. Ashrules (Dublin) - Posts: 518 - 23/08/2021 17:37:05 2374191 Link 0 |
Right now, yes. Limk is super hot favorite to win 3-in-a-row. foreveryoung (USA) - Posts: 1934 - 23/08/2021 17:49:18 2374194 Link 0 |
Another one of these Greatest ever nonsense topics. For the record, Kilkenny thrashed Waterford in the 2008 All-Ireland final, 3-30 to 1-13. They were leading 2-15 to 0-5 at half-time. It was the third, of there four in a row sequence. Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 2481 - 23/08/2021 18:19:04 2374198 Link 1 |
It would have to be up there for sure. I have been watching All-Irelands longer than I can bare to remember but this was off the charts. Kilkenny put a big beaten on us in 2008 but it was more sad to watch than any thing else and not taking from that great cats team. However despite the score I was on the edge of my seat to the end to see what kind of a play or score we could still see from Limerick. Just awesome. It was comparable to Kilkenny's performance against Waterford in '08, especially the first half. Was it better? How do you judge it? Kilkenny were ahead by more at half time and full time than Limerick were yesterday, and only hit two wides that day. But, the most recent performance always stands out in the memory. ballydalane (Kilkenny) - Posts: 1246 - 23/08/2021 18:55:16 2374206 Link 1 |
I was expecting someone to resurrect the 'Gods or what' thread after Limerick's display. Hope ould Jim was watching! M Lyster (Antrim) - Posts: 464 - 23/08/2021 19:01:13 2374209 Link 2 |
As much as it pains me to say it, the kilkenny performance in 2008 will likely never be beaten. They also beat a very strong and experienced Waterford team too for good measure. That Waterford team on paper contained some of the best players of all time and certainly of that era. Rightly or wrongly I thought Waterford would win that game but yesterday I was being generous to cork when I said linerick would win by 8+ tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 23/08/2021 19:33:25 2374225 Link 3 |
Greatest Ever All Ireland Final Display; legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 7888 - 23/08/2021 19:57:49 2374227 Link 0 |
Keeping in mind that a game lasts two halves, yesterday's performance wasn't even close to the greatest ever imo. Brilliant display don't get me wrong but thought they were nowhere near as good in the 2nd half.

It was third of four in a row.

Yes, that Waterford team had Ken McGrath, John Mullane, Tony Browne, Kevin Moran, Eoin Kelly, Dan Shanahan, Brick Walsh, Stephen Molumphy, the Prendergast brothers etc. An accomplished experienced team albeit a lot of them a few years past their peak. That young Cork team just weren't ready for the final yesterday.

And also part of a run that won plenty of titles around that 4 in a row as well

Waterford did not score from play until 10 minutes into the second half in 08.. Newyorkkat (Kilkenny) - Posts: 130 - 24/08/2021 02:50:11 2374284 Link 1 |
My own sentiment exactly. "The greatest ever" of anything tends to suffer from enormous recency bias. Lets face it, way back when there were outstanding defensive displays but they never got the plaudits because they didn't score 3-30 to win an All-Ireland. There is only one thing that matters on All-Ireland Final day - who wins. StoreysTash (Wexford) - Posts: 1737 - 24/08/2021 10:13:24 2374307 Link 1 |
I don't mind if 2008 was perceived as better. The main thing is our lads reached their peak and won the Liam MacCarthy Cup. I'm a huge admirer of Kilkenny hurling and their outstanding achievements. The absolute kingpins of hurling to date. For Limerick we just need to enjoy now. These are days we never thought we'd see. slayer (Limerick) - Posts: 6480 - 24/08/2021 10:27:32 2374314 Link 1 |

I don't think Kilkenny in the 2008 final were better than Limerick in 2021, or worse. The Kilkenny team of 2008 gave an outstanding display of hurling in the final, especially the first half. They were head and shoulders above the rest at the time. Limerick likewise in 2021.

2018 was not either. Limerick beat Cork, Tipp and Kilkenny and then dethroned the All Ireland Champions.
