All Premier League grounds packed to capacity this weekend. GAA should demand full capacity for Hurling and Football All Ireland Finals. No medical or scientific reason why this should not happen (unless the NEPHET gurus state that the now humanised Covid virus prefers GAA games rather than Premier League matches - ergo reduced attendances). dingle2 (Kerry) - Posts: 278 - 15/08/2021 21:29:25 2371709 Link 6 |
Other than hygiene protocols and social distancing restriction in some cases in the UK there are virtually no COVID restrictions there, no need to wear masks.

I dont think replicating england is anything we should be doing with regard to covid considering how boris and his mob have managed the pandemic. GAA are in no position to demand anything. we probably wont see full capacity for the all irelands but we are getting half. What do you mean by now humanised covid? What qualifications gives you the right to say NPHET are wrong? KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3511 - 16/08/2021 01:12:59 2371799 Link 5 |
You do realise the premier league is a different country with different rules? Do they have different rules in Kerry? Do they not have covid down in Kerry? skirge7 (UK) - Posts: 251 - 16/08/2021 08:12:03 2371819 Link 2 |
No medical or scientific reason?

Looking on from abroad, I'm puzzled by Ireland's approach to this. Ireland has one of the highest rates of vaccine takeup in the world and yet its lockdown is among the harshest. I guess maybe the powers that be don't want to risk overwhelming the health service, but at a certain point they have to open up to some extent. There have been huge sporting events going on all over continental Europe and it seems to have largely passed off without a resulting spike in infections. For instance, there have been several Formula One grand prix in Europe in recent months, having between 150k and 200k in attendance each time, very tightly controlled and few cases arising as a result. It should be possible to use the European Union's Green Pass system to check if patrons are vaccinated going into Croke Park. Even if the attendance is reduced, we should be able to get 50k or more in there. Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 16/08/2021 08:50:44 2371827 Link 6 |
Agree completely. Is 40,000 the allowed attendance for the finals? yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11236 - 16/08/2021 09:22:10 2371835 Link 12 |
I was wondering if 40K was the original plan for the final on August 31st would there be any scope to increase that number for two weeks later on the 14th?

I agree with most of what you say but NPHET have been wrong on many occasions and I would agree with you on the mob across the pond who are experts in spinning (we are pretty good at that ourselves).

Well people in NPHET just may have similar qualifications.

At certain points Ireland has opened up to some extent!! Its a sensible approach given people are still getting sick. Vaccines have helped but we all know people who have got covid despite taking the vaccine. It would be ridiculous to open the floodgates yet. Lets see how things are looking a week or two after all 12+ are vaccinated (or all that are willing to take it). This isn't going away and for me it would be a huge mistake to open up further. We have seen that when Irish people are given an inch they'll take a mile and should Limerick/Mayo in particular win I'm worried how much heed of restrictions both counties will take. Thats not a dig at those but I know the passion that is there

Well in fairness Cork fans will not be behind the door in passion and possible wild celebrations if they win either.

You're correct. They won't be but given what limerick have done the last two years in particular and celebrations being off the table, there's going to be tens of thousands showing up for the homecoming regardless it there is an organised one or not.

Doubt if Limerick win the celebrations would be as big as Corks if they win. That the UK has full stadiums for a good while now makes us look silly. Most of Europe has full stadiums. We are not following science. bloodyban (Limerick) - Posts: 1710 - 18/08/2021 14:48:03 2372745 Link 1 |
We faithfully mimick everything UK is doing, enough is enough, they a basket case, an outlier, steer well clear of them. That said look at Sweden, whose laughing now. arock (Dublin) - Posts: 4897 - 18/08/2021 23:24:05 2372917 Link 2 |
How do you make that out? Cases are still rising on average. People are still getting very sick and some are dying? What science are you referring to?

So 40,000 allowed into Croke Park this weekend for the hurling final but they drop down to 24,000 a week LATER for the 2nd football final....you couldn't make it up. Craggy Island. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11236 - 19/08/2021 10:14:36 2372951 Link 14 |
