So the Observer have it that 6 or 7 people have put their name forward. No indication of who any of those people might be. We'll know soon enough I guess but there's certainly no outstanding homegrown candidates from what I can see. My preference (realistic) would still be Padraic Davis but who knows what his feelings are on the matter. Square_B (Leitrim) - Posts: 1274 - 01/09/2021 13:33:04 2376998 Link 0 |
Davis seems the best choice alright as he may have some interest, could not see Walsh or Rochford having any interest after that annus horribilus. Leitrim football at its lowest ebb since we lost to London gaelsboy (Leitrim) - Posts: 624 - 01/09/2021 22:11:32 2377133 Link 0 |
6 or 7 people is a positive in its self I think. I actually didn't think anyone would be interested. I'm not knocking Davis at all but I believe it has to be a well known name in GAA to get everyone to commit. I'm not convinced Davis has the "X-Factor" I'm Champotime18 (Leitrim) - Posts: 442 - 02/09/2021 13:27:02 2377249 Link 0 |
So called X factor managers will only get that out of players for a short time. Players respond to someone who shows they really care about them and the county and not there own interest

I'd love to see Malachy O'Rourke or someone of that stature get the job and a top class strength and conditioning coach, as I said before there is only a limited number of county jobs available at any given time, so we shouldn't under sell ourselves or try to do it on the cheap. Realistically football is our only sport Except for a small bit of hurling, so if we are going to do it let's do it right and give the county a team to get behind in numbers. 3rdmidfielder (Australia) - Posts: 411 - 02/09/2021 15:45:15 2377291 Link 0 |
Anyone any notion of who any of the supposed candidates are? Dodgy_Pass (Leitrim) - Posts: 398 - 02/09/2021 18:45:51 2377345 Link 0 |
Malachy O'Rourke is up in Derry managing Watty Graham's, as much as I'd love to think he'd be in for Leitrim, you can be sure he's not up in Derry for the craic. He probably has his eye on the Derry job when it comes up and he'd be a top candidate for it for sure. This appointment has to be right, we haven't a bad team I feel but we all know Covid really killed all the momentum built up from 2019. Certainly investing in strength & conditioning has to be a priority for the next management team.

Any self respecting county player should be "bursting" himself every week no matter who the manager is,it takes years of work in the gym to get to county standard and thats where a lot of our lads fail badly.

Andy Moran would be my choice if he was interested in it. As you said S&C is huge that's Andys back round. Mike Solan is a join manager With Andy at club level. He's also a really good coach. The commute isn't huge for them prob less than an hour. I think Andy would bring the X-factor and yes being honest Andy would see this as a stepping stone to the Mayo job in a few years. The only way that would happen is if he got Leitrim competitive again so I'd be more than happy if he got us to a good level and then had the structures in place for someone else to take over in a few seasons. Malachy O Rourke is also a great Shout and he had Fermanagh and Monaghan both really competitive Champotime18 (Leitrim) - Posts: 442 - 03/09/2021 09:30:49 2377455 Link 2 |
I would agree massively with this. He comes across excellently on the radio and his attention to detail is immense. The S&C background and the input the Sloan's would have could be huge. I would even be happy if Sloan got the job and Moran was number two. O'Rourke would be great but I'm not sure if it would be possible. Hopefully the types of people who the committee are looking at are the likes of Darcy, Moran/Sloan O'Rourke and Walsh other. We should be looking at the likes of Offaly and thinking why cant we attract the same calibre of person. OnTheBank (Australia) - Posts: 170 - 05/09/2021 06:38:55 2377863 Link 0 |
I wonder if ex Roscommon Manager John Evans is available?

Wouldn't think evans is the type of person we need now. Oisin McConvile would be another person I'd like to see approached at least. After Dublin ladies loosing today would Mick Bohan be another candidate?

We may forget about the Mayo boys coming to manage Leitrim... from what I can see all they want is to aspire to manage their own county or teams in their own county and would you blame them. Mike Sloan was in for the Mayo job last time round and he's not going to sully his reputation in Mayo with Leitrim. He'll be in again for Mayo when the time comes. Andy Moran is still very unproven despite all ... I mean the lad is only managing his own club since the turn of the year... what really could he offer Leitrim with 2 Gym's on the go? Busy man no doubt but I can't see him up watching club games in Leitrim on days off that's for sure. I think the fact that the Observer gave no indication who applied & we're all speculating tells me the caliber maybe low... and anyhow do we even have the financial resources to pay for a decent management team??? I hope I'm wrong but I'm not hopeful. Square_B (Leitrim) - Posts: 1274 - 06/09/2021 06:44:13 2378079 Link 0 |
Bohan has turned down numerous Counties approaches the last two years, Whether defeat yesterday changes his mind it quite possible. My personal opinion is he has/had his eyes on the Dublin's men's teams job . Despite the defeat to Meath he has a good reputation so would be a good appointment if Leitrim could sway him.

Let's face it wehavent a hope of attracting established manager and any upcoming manager starting put wouldn't risk ruining their future with us. With that in mind we would be better trying to put together a team from within the county, mc keown and Reynolds with possibly another coach or two for the forwards. harleys (Leitrim) - Posts: 318 - 09/09/2021 11:27:43 2379010 Link 0 |
The way I see it is anything Leitrim do will be an improvement so a manager has nothing to lose. We are rock bottom. There is only one way we can go. A big name will get the interest of lads who haven't committed in recent years but if we go for a cheap appointment to save money, then we can expect absolutely nothing different. There is a core of good lads that need time, Paul Keaney, Jordan Reynolds, the Harkins, Oisin Madden, Darragh Rooney, Conor Gaffney, Ciaran Cullen, Donal Casey, Conor Reynolds, David Bruen, Keith Beirne, McGloin, Keith Keegan, Conor Dwyer, Eoin McLoughlin, Jack Gilheaney, Ryan and Riordan O Rourke, Jack Heslin, Nicholas McWeeney, Tom Prior all have the athleticism for modern day football, throw in some of the older lads like Paddy MaGuire, Donal Wrynn, Evan Sweeney, Conor Dolan, Benny and Aiden Flynn there is the makings of a good panel. Bring in some of the lads from recent u17 and u20 team into a culture of everyone maximising their potential and being dogmatic for the jersey and this job can be a great stepping stone for an ambitious manager. I don't buy into we haven't the players. There was a malaise in the last set up that reeked of no belief in the players, defeatist attitude and the players did as was expected. Leitrim needs to get a ruthless edge, both on and off the field. Lads in it for the perks and dragging their heels should be given the door at the earliest opportunity until they totally buy in. No wonder everyone likes us and don't like the Rossies. They have all their teams prepared to the last and in defiance to their population they have been a top ten team for almost a decade. That type of culture will always reap dividends. We have been dragging our heels penny pinching for close to 20 years and this is where we are at. Every person with an interest in gaelic football within the county (exiles also) should be demanding more. I don't mind finishing bottom of Division 4 and getting well beaten in the championship if I know that is the best we can do but unfortunately I am certain we have not being getting the best team out or even the best out of the team we play for a long time now. Rant over. po3nmotion (Leitrim) - Posts: 222 - 09/09/2021 14:26:16 2379076 Link 0 |
With the news filtering through that Shane Curran was interviewed for the Fermanagh job, we surely don't have much hope. I wouldn't even have Curran down as a obvious choice for Leitrim never mind Fermanagh. I also find it hard to believe that there was only 2 people interviewed for the Fermanagh job... https://amp.rte.ie/amp/1245623/ Square_B (Leitrim) - Posts: 1274 - 09/09/2021 14:34:09 2379080 Link 0 |
Interesting Square B. The backroom team that Curran has proves now that if you want to compete that the management team will take 10+ seats on the team bus. Not cheap. po3nmotion (Leitrim) - Posts: 222 - 09/09/2021 16:19:00 2379116 Link 0 |
Curran didn't get the Fermanagh job... the other man in for it, Kieran Donnelly got the nod. Still shocked that only 2 people were interviewed for the job. Wouldn't bode well for Leitrim I would think...
