Sorest AI Final Loss

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I know any final loss hurts and Kerry have the most losses in finals but for posters who have had their hopes dashed on final day, which would you class as the sorest ?
Mayo have had a few fairly sickening ones in the last decade for sure but is there one that stands out as more haunting than the others?
Kilkenny in the hurling too were on the verge of the first five in a row only for Tipp to blitz them in 2010. Indeed they came back and won the following year which must have been a bit galling. As I say, they all hurt but some more than others.

Still haunted by the 1978 final. Dublin looked comfortable enough until that goal. Nobody has ever found out why the ref blew for a free against Paddy Cullen. But what quick thinking Sheehy demonstrated and the execution was brilliant. I watched it in horror from the Hoganstand while still a teenager and I've never forgotten it. The wheels just came off the wagon aND Kerry went on to destroy Dublin. It was a decisive moment and Kerry went on to dominate football for the next decade.

Every final loss is hard but for me 82 was devastating although when I look back its great for Matt Connor to have won an all ireland and it was a great Offaly team also. 2011 was sore too because for me Kerry were the better team but got no luck. I saw Kerry lose 8 finals live 76 82 02 05 08 11 15 and 19.The so rest were 82 and 11 for me. When you are beaten by the better team it's hard but easier accept but when you think you were better and lose its very hard.

1994 all Ireland hurling final.
5 points up with 5 mins to go, lost by 6pts..in a long list of miserable Croke park experiences that stands out for all the wrong reasons.

Pure speculation out of me but I think if we'd won that we'd have won another one or two over the next few years instead of waiting until 2018.

The reason for the free was a stupid one. A few minutes earlier Power and Cullen clashed and then Paddy tripped Power with a little kick. The Kerry crowd went mad as ref took nó action. So a few mins later when Power and Cullen came together again the ref gave Kerry a free to make up for earlier. It was never a free and it was a terrible decision and Sheehy quick thinking was class. But of course it should never have been awardedso I understand your pain.

In fairness to us we don't seem to lose that many finals compared to Kerry or Mayo. When we did it was mostly to Kerry. But thankfully we've gotten over them a few times in recent years.
The '94 final was a bummer for me personally, we had chances and didn't take them.

The most painful losses watching my own county were the 2000 football final and the 1986 hurling final. We would have beaten Kerry in the 2000 drawn game if Derek Savage had passed to a wide-open Padraic Joyce in the last minute instead of shooting wide from a much more difficult position. Kerry were definitely the better team in the replay and the chance was gone. In 1986, we had such high hopes for the hurlers after they had destroyed Kilkenny in the semi-final but they seemed to freeze against Cork in the final and never really got going. Thankfully they bounced back to win it in 87 and 88. Overall though, the most sickening final defeat by any team has to be Limerick's collapse against Offaly in 1994 - I am sure some of their players still have nightmares about it.

I know this might sound crazy to alot of you but for me as a supporter I often found semi final losses harder to bear. When you lose a final its over and in a day or two it's all about next year. When you lose a semi there s a constant reminder all the way to the final. Strange I know but I get over final defeats quicker.

The 2017 final. Thought Mayo played excellent right throughout but just fell short against the greatest team. While I don't like to pick any one incident the Vaughan sending off was key.

Special mention to the two own goals final. The game ended in a draw but we lost the replay by a point. You'll never see two own goals in a final ever again.

Mayo in 1996 is surely the open and shut winner here. They're still bleating on about how they were robbed a quarter of a century later. Despite the fact they threw away 6 point leads both days... they weren't robbed they were bottlers

Still don't know how Limerick lost the 1994 all ireland hurling final and tbf offaly also did it to Kilkenny in 200 was it the brian whelehan final...

I actually don't know how Mayo fans dealt with that. It was there for the taking. The Vaughan sending off was crucial.
You know there were times and one could almost believe Mayo were indeed cursed.

Sick thing too about that final is that Limerick looked comfortable, possibly too comfortable for the first 65 minutes of that game.
Its one thing Johnny Dooley's 20 yard free going in, it was a super shot. But what was Joe Quaid doing pucking the ball back out so quickly and the defending for Pat O' Connors goal was shambolic. It was a an awful way to lose a game, they we're getting the 10 count at that stage. The points just sailed over for fun after that. I shed tears that day .

Meath 1996 easily. We were ahead for most of the two games but managed to kick it away.

The 2014 final still annoys me, we didn't play our game at all but others may say Kerry didn't let us, from my viewpoint though we just didn't turn up that day for whatever reason, McGuinness was the master at getting fellas mentally ready or so the story went but we sure as hell weren't ready that day, getting beat in last years Ulster final too was an awful flop, we played rubbish on the day but that's life, if you play your best and get beat then it's never as bad, just a sickener when you know you didn't put in your best performance.

You name it we found a way to loose it...again and again.
But look there's no point dwelling too much on these things....it's done and dusted. Get up, move on and look forward.

1986 Final v Kerry. Against all expectations, we were well ahead coming into the last quarter. It would have been far easier to bear if we'd have been bate out the gate from the start.

Yep. I knew at half time it just wasn't going to happen for us that day. Then what happened poor old Papa just put the tin hat on it.
