The play of Dublin when a game is in the mix is at times so incisive. How they dismantled Mayo in the 2019 semifinals just after halftime was very impressive.

Look I'm glad I can appreciate these players, if you can't well I'm disappointed on your behalf.

Perhaps I would admire Dublin more if I came from Antrim, if I didn't know how they got to where they are or "achieved" what they did, or if I was just a casual follower of football.

But parking all that to one side, there is no question that Dublin do have some great players and even with all their well documented advantages, do I believe there is a way to beat them. Absolutely 100%.

Surely you must agree that a conversation with a Kerry man for example would be a very different conversation regarding football than you might have with a man from Carlow. Or a conversation with a German regarding the World cup wouldn't be the same as having a conversation with someone from Wales.

Context man, that's all, so no need to get upset and narky about it. It doesn't mean that there aren't some very good players who play or have played for Antrim or Carlow, there are and I know them all, but counties of that size simply don't have the numbers and Antrim have lost a number of players this year for personal reasons.

I do think the criticism at times is so over the top and just annoys me the drivel that gets spouted about how the games gone and the like.

I've really enjoyed the last few championships, I'm hoping some teams figure out how to counter Dublin's keep ball. It would be better if the competition was more open again and I'd be happy for keep ball to go the way of the ultra mass defence and die out as a legitimate winning tactic.

I'd rather it happen naturally than having more tinkering to the rules."]So a lad from Tipp or Limerick telling us what a great time he had at Croker for the day is your idea of 'analytical' thinking?

Never said that at all but he's likely to be far more qualified to talk about success than someone from Antrim who's won f all, but sure maybe yourself and your mate here might help Antrim or are you another two who talk the talk but can't walk the walk.

Normally Antrim people are nice people. It's not my fault Antrim have won f all.

I do admire Dublin, I admire the way they have codded armchair pundits like yourself and your mate here, the GAA and previous governments. Hats off to them.

I agree we've had some great matches in recent years. If teams could finally crack the Dublin setup we'd have a very good championship in prospect. Rather than imitation it would be great to see some top teams create their own identity with tactics and gameplans new to the scene that might surprise the best in the land instead of playing into their hands. Dublin will be beaten, they're not machines nor Gods. They've been on the brink a time or 2. There wouldn't have needed to be a lot go differently to see them have 3 AI from the past 6.

Id have my over/under for the number of All Ireland they win in the next 10 at 6 or 6.5. It'd still be very dominant but you'd hope That maybe it could be more open that than though. It'd make for a more interesting competition.

To beat them a team will need to be brave. They'll need to press aggressively, they'll need to press both behind and in front of the ball. If teams do press aggressively maybe it leaves gaps for long direct ball playing then. I'd be positive on the potential for the game to develop in a more attractive way going forwards.

This is partly my problem with tinkering of rules to get back to a vision of what football "should be". You do that too much you never get to see what it could become.

My whole take on this is that fair enough, Dublin are able to wind down the clock by keeping possession, making smart decisions on the pitch and waiting until the opposition allow them space in and around their preferred scoring zone. They have the players, and at the end of games they do use it to prevent the opposition scoring.

Dublin also use it to take all the steam out of the opposition's efforts to get some momentum going at critical moments in a game, and this is where I think it is leaning into the cynical side. Like a possession based blanket designed to frustrate opponents.

I don't think a pass number is practical and anyone who has played tag rugby or watched Rugby League will know that sometimes, it gets you to half way and you end up having to just kick the ball out the other end to avoid turning it over close to your own line. Teams might even develop a system where they pass a ball to an opponent and then crowd that player in order to win the ball back and start a new set of 8 passes.

I think we might be headed into some form of managed timekeeping. A shot clock of some kind that will stop and start when possession changes or when a free kick is awarded. Maybe this would even achieve the GAA's main aims - negate the blanket, encourage longer kickouts and fielding, while removing any inclination a team may have toward ball retention.

Good old traditional Catch and Kick...back to the 70s with you all!!

How long should a shot clock be - it should be somewhat liberal - 90 seconds ?
