Football Max Passes Limit

Replying To centerfield:  "This passing the ball around the place timewasting has gone beyond a joke. Teams get 3-4 pts up towards the end and starts playing keep ball for 5-6 min.

Max pass limit should be put into place in rules.

e.g after 8 passes you must shoot. if team doesn't shoot possession given to opposition keeper.

Will force teams to attack not mind their lead"
All that will do is encourage a more defensive game, fill up more space in the backline forcing the opposition to pass more to get back possession, a good way to kill the sport.

??? Did you watch any of the games at the weekend? Donegal's defense was nowhere to be seen! :D

It's a brilliant tactic and onus should be on defending team to win the ball back. It looks bad on TV but that's down to the overly cautious nature of teams.

If a team builds a lead they are entitled to try hold the ball. It's 15 on 15, the team chasing in theory should be in a position to cover every player. The team who are losing and on the receiving end shouldn't be rewarded for carrying on sitting in their defensive shape.

It's amazing that people keep going on about this. "Something needs to be done so let's make the blanket defence easier to implement".

Playing keep ball and drawing your opponent out is the only way that has been proven successful against a well organised blanket defence.

Agreed we need less rules rather than more. Frees for jersey pulls and pulling someone's arm followed by that fella acrobatically leaping on the ground and rolling around stopping the game for a minute shouldn't be ruled against. These shouldnt be fouls. It's supposed to be a contact sport. Dangerous contact like elbows or shoulders to the head or chest should be red cards straight away. Probably the best way to counter a team playing keep ball is go old fashioned man on man.

Lets be honest about it, hand passing is right at the bottom of the ladder when it comes to skills of Gaelic football.

There was a passage of play yesterday in the second half where Dublin were very close to the Kerry goal and within 30 seconds they had passed the ball out to the middle of the field, I honesty thought I had lost it and they were playing the other way.

How people can say this is good football is beyond me, they clearly never played the game at any level, and I always found it was players who were never very good at the game who shouted loudest in their praises of of hand passing, it was always helpful in camouflaging their lack of kick passing ability.

Of course you need a certain amount of hand passing but ultimately I believe Dublin's obsession with this basement "skill" will lead to their downfall.

"
Dublin were winding down the clock pure and simple. Their skill levels are very high. They are also extremely will organised and in great physical condition. Mentally Dublin are very, very tough. They never panic. Limiting the number of hand passes will only encourage teams to drop back and wait for the kick. The game is much more open in recent times. Leave it alone. Let it evolve and stop this constant meddling with the rules."

I daresay its because Dublin use it to such devastating affect that people want it stopped. Teams have been retaining possession for long periods long before Dublin. Memories are very short around here. It wasn't long ago that Donegal were being castigated for their defensive tactics and now Kerry are using the very same tactics but it's grand like.

Ludicrous nonsense again about new rules. Allow the game to develop and teams will find a way. The standard of refereeing is low at present due to complications of more and more rules. The one rule I'd bring in is that we can't change the rules for at least three seasons!

You seem to be the non resident Dublin backer here. Nobody is saying it is grand any team are using these tactics, hence the suggestion to try and get rid of them, which many are saying is not needed. If the majority of people are happy with the current state of Gaelic football then we deserve the spectacle we are getting, but I think the game is in very poor shape and will be for years to come. To paraphrase Tommy Lyons that was a game of a***boxing yesterday and in any potential championship rematch Dublin will comfortably defeat Kerry, and it will be as poor a game of pseudo rugby league as it was yesterday.

or allow forward passes only. This could be refined to beyond the 21 yd line or whatever. I more or less gave up on watching football when lads would punt a ball 20 -30 yards back toward their own goal. Now its even crept into hurling, which as we all know is a proper game :)

I don't think you could say Donegal have played "defensively" since Rory Gallagher left.
