Armagh Vs Tyrone

(Oldest Posts First)

Huge game.

Thoughts? Predictions? Team News?

For Tyrone, I personally felt the Donegal game was underwheling to be honest. I how pundits are trying to convince us that Tyrone are some kind of expansive team all of a sudden but my eyes and the team told me otherwise. Players got back behind the ball en masse, there wasnt much kicking long. McGeary sweeper. The forward line had 1, maybe 2 natural forwards. (Donaghy & McKenna at a push). Petey Harte at centre back didnt influance the game all, same as Mattie Donnelly.

Our full back line was probably our starters come championship and strongest looking line on the pitch. They shipped 18 points. Not going to win many games shipping 18 points. Murpgy and McBrearty ran riot.

I feel we are strong enough to beat Armagh, who had a good win against a weakened Monaghan team. I dont get the hype that is been peddled about this much vaulted Armagh forward line. Been talked about for years and they havent produced. The two O'Neill's are excellent, especaially Rian, but the like of Campbell, Grugan, Hall are decent forwards but easy marked, especially aginst good teams.

Im not saying Armagh wont win, they very well could, not i feel Tyrone will have to much for them.

Tyrone have to make use of their forward talent if they're going to do something this year. McKenna is and out and out 11 and not anything else. McShane at 14 will be a huge boost when he comes back. Put Donaghy and Canavan in the corners and they have a quality front four. Something like Sludden and Meyler as the wing forwards with the 2 Donnellys at midfield then. The team picked to play Donegal was identical to a Mickey Harte team. If I was a Tyrone supporter I'd be hoping it was just not wanting to show anything to Donegal.

Completely agree with this post.

It you didnt know either manager and you watched both games you couldnt tell the difference.

I feel McKenna is an 11. McShane been back at 14 would be great. Richie Donnelly isnt a full forward.

It will be very intresting to see what the tactics are against Armagh.

I think it is harsh for the new managers to face so much grief so early. In the old days the new duo would have McKenna cup matches, 7 league games etc to bed in their ideas. Certainly I thought the way they played with the under 21's in 2015/16 would lead one to think eventually they will be more expansive. I do think they will use a lot more long ball and it will be difficult getting the mix right with the skillfull forwards in the panel. I would imagine these two guys are long enough in the tooth to work out that we will not win any major games playing ultra defensive against the likes of Dublin, Kerry, Donegal and Mayo. Looking in the other corner Armagh's manager is still looking to get things in shape after six years in charge.

Jesus Fridge your full of negatives. The Kerry man had more positives. I seen plenty of long ball in. Agree with your opinion of Harte and Donnelly, their not doing it for a while now. Glad to see Armagh back in Div 1 but Tyrone should be beating them by at least 6 with the forwards Tyrone have.

Maybe I'm been a tad harsh.

It is a COVID hit year to be fair. However, as I said, div 1 football and all Ireland semi finals/final are a bare minimum.

On to Armagh. If we keep a few of their better players at bay we should be fine. The last thing we need is to be going into the Monaghan game needing to win to stay up.

Tyrone by 3.

Fingers crossed. However one league game in front of no crowd is a far cry from the bright lights of Croke Park in the white heat of championship. He did look very good, very calm for his debut.
Slightly worrying we had to relay on a young debutant to kick 10 points to keep us in the end.

Anyway. Team selection is going to be very interesting. Hopefully me attack minded

Excellent game of football.

Can I just say how refreshing it is to watch such positive and attractive football from our players.

I said it before and I will say it again, I wouldn't mind us floating between division 1 and 2 for a few years if it meant we could develop a better brand of football.

We have tried to beat the Kerry's, Mayos and Dublins of this world numerous times over the past decade playing a negative and defensive type of game that just hasnt worked.

I for one will back Brian and Fergal to the last if they continue to trust our players in this way and let them actually play football.

Anyway, I have a flight to catch. I have another frigin conference in Dubai!

Harte and Donnelly not doing it for a while now? It's a miracle M Donnelly playing at all, with the injury he had. Both men played well today. Donaghy struggled a bit. Canavan played well. L Brennan every bit as good at the frees as Donaghy

Donnelly and Harte excellent. Ran the game unlike last week where they seemed to be man marking Donegal players. McCurry very good.

Canavan played well. Brolly goes completely OTT because of his surname. I would like Canavan close to goals to be honest. I think other players on that Tyrone team can go the job of hand passing around the arc for 70 mins.

If Armagh had of scored that penalty we were in trouble. Luckily they tired big time and had no subs to use. We saw it out well but there is a lot of improvement needed.

We conceded 2-10 in think and they missed a penalty. It's too much to concede. The biggest worry was the simplicity of the goals we conceded. They walked one in and a very simple pass over the top for the second. Some of Armagh's points were very easy. I'm not sure Hampsey is a man marking full back. I think he is a centre back who plugs the centre but who can go forward as well.

Next week huge. Monaghan looked dangerous yesterday.

I wouldn't be too worried about your 2-10, we'd 3-7 conceded by half time!! (it should have been more). That would be something to worry about.

Harte showed last night what he can do, my original point was that when Harte and Donnelly weren't doing it they got staying but look at Sludden, he was took off or didn't start and he is an brilliant player. Anyway our forwards need to stay in more where they can do the most damage with the talent that's hanging out of them.
