Donegal V Monaghan

Replying To Tirchonaill1:  "Great show by Monaghan, you have a great team there coming through again and should have a good run in the Ulster Championship, Tyrone v Monaghan is going to be another great game."
To be honest I don't think we will have much of a run in the UC. A couple of years until we are back at our best. We will enjoy the good days & be there for the not so good. Very proud of our continued evolution.

Exactly, I think big Hughie was very fortunate not to get a wee ten minute siesta.

If it was just a one off you'd say fair enough. But I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that in almost every match Cassidy referees there are talking points based on his decisions.

How is that now every time a penalty is awarded a black card follows.... Cassidy is a terrible referee but the GAA keep giving him games... He will soon be in line to take control of an All Ireland Final... Heaven help us...!!!!

That's exactly it Lockjaw. People are talking about Barry Cassidy and his decisions after games. The best refs are the ones you don't notice during games. Having said that referees have an exceptionally difficult job and it is being made more difficult by the constant and unnecessary meddling with the rules by the leadership of the GAA. Almost every rule change places additional work on the shoulders of the referees (eg) the advanced mark. The constant meddling with the rules has to stop.

Great game of football. Monaghan for such a small county of knack of unearthing top class forwards- Freeman, McManus and now young McCarthy (sawxhim up close two years ago in under 20 semi).

Referee coming in for very unfair criticism. The black card was brought in to cut out cynical play. First Monaghan one, he attempts to trip, withdraws but it is too late. It looks cynical and he rightly gets 10 minutes to reflect. He comes back on and within minutes he body checks a player. Don't want to be critical of the player but he must just learn but I don't think Monaghan management can complain too much about it. Maybe they can point to some inconsistency but in general I thought Cassidy got most right (from a neutral view).

Credit to both sides for such a good game. Hope Monaghan can get something from Tyrone game. They belong in Division 1.

Cassidy was a bit peculiar in some of his applications. Obaoill didn't to my mind deserve his yellow cards for what he was given them for though earlier in the game had given away some ropey enough frees and should have probably booked before he was.
I don't think the rules help on the black card. Pretty sure they are still trip, body collide (after ball played)and pull down (like rugby tackle). Would it not be better to have the rule be defined as just a cynical foul. Mcfaddens foul should be a black card as it's clearly a cynical though you could argue that the very defined black card definition does not cover what he did. Boyles first should not be a black card, it wasn't cynical but he did throw throw out a leg a little bit and refs maybe see this. His second one was not clever though and couldn't complain about it.

I can't agree Benny. The first card for Conor Boyle was a very poor decision and should never been given. The second card given to Daire O Baoill was also a very poor decision. The failure to give a card to Hugh McFadden was another poor decision. I have every sympathy for referees given the increased difficulty of their responsibilities. That increased responsibility has come about because of the dreadful meddling with the rules of the game perpetrated by the leadership of the GAA. Unfortunately however Barry Cassidy had a bad day at the office yesterday.

Thought Monaghan were robbed, they played really well and their black card was very soft. Donegal were a horror show at the back and have some serious issues to address before the championship starts. The positive for Donegal is that we didn't throw in the towel, battled on and got a draw. We are very good going forward but equally poor at the back.

Based on that showing I would fancy Minaghan to get to the Ulster final at least. Niall Kearns was very impressive.

I may not be a neutral but have to disagree, there were 5 all ulster matches in 8 days with just two cynical pieces of play in all five matches. Mc Fadden and Boyles second yesterday. I wouldn't blame Mc Fadden for what he done the way things were going for them at the time, someone had to do something, but he should have been given a black card. I don't understand how you can say Boyle attempts to trip yet pulled out of a trip at the same time, he either tried to trip or he didn't, surely if he pulled out of it he should not be punished. The Donegal player was buying a free going to ground, and I know as a Monaghan man I can't really afford to talk. This meant we were a man down for ten minutes in the first half when in fact they should have been. They were in trouble during this time and it had a bearing on the result as they scored the next two points after Boyles first black card. It also resulted in him being sent off for his deserved second black. I'm sorry but these decisions cost us and had a bearing on the result.
The Donegal player was sent off essentially for trying to play football, he deserved no more than a ticking, never mind 2 yellows.

Would agree with you about the attacking football, Ulster teams are to the forefront in this regard. Its easy to double up an target one or two marquee forwards, another job trying to do that on six. I'm open to correction here but the 8 forwards used yesterday were all free takers with their respective clubs, comfortable taking a score, and the pressure exerted in possession in div 1 will bring them on.

Tyrone are using similar tactics to us and are are trying to get a similar blend as us, so next week should be a cracker, but I hope the ref let's them at it and is not a factor, we have two chances to stay up now or even win the thing, should both ourselves and Donegal win, hopefully we take one win and at least stay up.

Yes I def hope Monaghan stay up in div 1 and if I was a Monaghan fan I'd be sick after that performance by Cassidy yesterday, I often wonder do these refs watch the game back and try and learn from their mistakes like we all do with everything, seems to me a lot of them seem to be on a power trip, the best refs can read a game and let it go, there wasn't a dirty tackle in that whole game.
Bonner needs to sort out our defence asap because we are like headless chickens back there at times, the likes of Dublin or Kerry would destroy us defending like we are now.

No sooner are we rid of Marty Duffy then his clone Barry Cassidy comes along. How many times do these same refs become the main story? Very poor.

Seán Hurson has made two dreadful calls pulling back both Seán Ò Sé and Darragh Moynihan when both were in the clear. Moynihan scored a goal. Awful stuff again.

Replying To Tirchonaill1:  "You'd know all about the black card in Tyrone seeing as it was UK Sean that defined the thing in the first place, lucky to get that draw in a very strange game, we kicked so many stupid wides in the first half though, we need to see a big improvement for the Armagh game, brilliant to have Mac Niallas back on board, such a class footballer.
That game was better than a dozen training sessions, learned a lot and better to learn it now than in the Ulster Championship."
Go away and play your tiny violin. McFadden deserved a black. Everyone seen it and pundits agreed.

As I said it was a good game. No way in hell Donegal will concede 4 goals again this year unless it's against the Dubs.

Leaves it interesting for next week. Donegal will beat Armagh. Leaving Tyrone vs Monaghan to fight for second/third

Donegal were well behind Monaghan's pace. To be fair the northern teams and Monaghan have had a head start with training to the rest.

We always considered ourselves the 7th county, never found wanting sort of speak

I never said he didn't, I was just pointing out where you said it was the definition of a black card that you would know all about it in Tyrone from UK Sean's drag down on McManus,
that was what most people would recognise as the definition of a black card offence.

Probably right about not conceding 4 goals, but we could concede 2. Also we could be less flamboyant going up the pitch if we are on the back foot in defence. I don't feel too optimistic about the game yesterday.
At a guess, I think we will improve. I think we can improve. But I also am very very wary of Cavan this year again. They are the team to beat. I know that they are away in Omagh for their first round match, but they are ulster champions and will take great confidence from this. They had a good win the other night v Longford.

You're right any team that wins an Ulster title have to be serious contenders subsequently, unless it was a fluke

You sound like a member of the DUP, whataboutery when someone questions an opinion.

Personally I thought Neil McGee is starting to show his age. I've stated on here how important McGee was to Donegal but his lack of pace is telling.
