Jaysus I thought it was April fools day when I seen the title. As a Louth supporter I am over the moon that wee landed Mickey Harte but he has his work cut out. A few of the players have come back most notable Andy Mc Donnell and the Byrne brothers Declan and Ciaran. Louth have not beaten the Dubs in the Championship since 1973. Since then they have lost the last 15 Championship matches including two years ago when they suffered their biggest ever Championship defeat losing by 26 points. They have failed to score a goal against the Dubs in their last 7 meetings. Louth seem to beaten before they take to pitch against Dublin. Louth has the same population as Mayo (more or less) despite Mayo having six times the area of Louth. Population per se isn't the reason they're not competitive. Gleebo (Mayo) - Posts: 2208 - 18/01/2021 23:15:35 2328012 Link 1 |

Gleebo you were living in the bad part of Drogheda in County Meath.

Mickys goal will be to be the 2nd best team in Leinster although that wouldn't be hard. Saynothing (Tyrone) - Posts: 2014 - 19/01/2021 20:11:59 2328133 Link 4 |
That's true, Ollie, strictly speaking my abode was just over the border in Co. Meath. Try telling that to Meath people, though! A lot of them seem to see that area from Laytown onwards to Drogheda as Louth, really. I seem to remember it got incorporated into the Louth constituency for general election purposes, too. I worked for a few years in an establishment well-known to yourself and Biggy and there was very little interest in GAA generally afaics, other than when the Colmcilles won something. Those were lively nights! Come to think of it, the 2010 Leinster final was also a messy night. Maybe the less said about that, the better! I wonder what spark of interest this will have in the local community in Louth, is he a lightening rod to spark interest, participation and a draw for commercial and sponsorship opportunities. All of those can go a long way to enabling success. TheUsername (Dublin) - Posts: 4445 - 20/01/2021 13:29:02 2328205 Link 2 |
Yeah at least its achievable for him to be second best team in the province he's managing in now, not like what he's left behind ;) See how that works. Have a lot of time for Tyrone people but like a small minority in every county, my own included, they let the rest down. Pity they wouldn't heed those words of old that if you've nothing good to say then say nothing at all. brian (Meath) - Posts: 1954 - 20/01/2021 14:12:11 2328212 Link 7 |
Wouldn't disagree with that viewpoint. Hopefully as Ollie said with a few guys coming back and getting involved Louth could start rising and winning might provide a bit more interest. Mickey alone won't do it all no more than Micko or Paidi in Kidare/ Laois and Westmeath. Needs to have a string base of players which might not be there with Louth, but good luck to them and hopefully a rising tide will raise all boats.

I agree with Mickey Harte wont win games for Louth, but he will surely give them a bit of a lift, and isnt it kind of like old times with a big name manager going into a smaller county (smallest in this case:) and taking charge, never a lover of his tactics, they were playing abit more football in the last year or two of his tenure to be fair, I wish him well with Louth and I wish Louth themselves well..county has produced some excellent footballers over the years with little or no sucess or recognition...great to see them on this venture and hope it goes well. Brian, you'd be good craic on the high stool. Murphys sing 1 about reeling them in.
