Replying To Mads: "Good to hear they were gracious in defeat. After the hiding they got there definitely can be no complaints. Regardless though they do have certainly the best underage in the country and if we are streets ahead at senior they have created a chasm at underage. For now though I think our lads deserve absolutely nothing but admiration. I hate to think so far ahead and I said at the outset I would be thrilled with a back to back and if that's to be it then so it is. However based on that whipping dished out in the AI final you would have to be a bit disappointed if another wasn't tagged on. I think Cork will need another year and I do agree with the bookies about Waterford being our nearest competitors. The are big and fast but they need a bit more consistency. They did it have one of those big big days against us. Galway are big and have hurlers. If they can gel under a manager I definitely wouldn't write them off either. Already PC is a serious doubt for the year which is massive. To my mind those injuries nearly take the year to recover from and is the player ever fully right afterwards. So like you say now is the time for Pat Ryan to step up and nail a starting spot. Those young lads will have to be used. There's no way the same 15/16 players can be expected to get up to those standards for the round robin. It would be brilliant also for Mike Casey to be back. He has been dogged with injuries throughout. Also Barry Murphy. He came on in the AI final. Perhaps be could be used more especially with PC out and he is more of a corner forward." Here's a stat for you - Pat Ryan has made 16 championship appearances - but has yet to start a game

There's a small injection of fresh blood needed on the bench in my opinion. Id hate to see Limerick having guys retire in 3 or 4 years and then have very inexperienced guys have to step up. The underage have been only so so the past few years. No marque corner forwards coming through really. I'm nit picking but still..

Our underage has been the closest to Cork for the last few years and the defeat this year in the minor was the 2nd loss to Cork in about 10 years at minor and they are the measuring standard at the moment. Is Adam English, Alan O'Connor not potentially marquee corner forwards. Players also develope at different times in their lives like Gillane only realised his potential as a 21 year old and Flanagan couldn't make an U21 team in 2017 before staring at senior level the following year plus a young player coming into an environment with Kinnerk around is only going to get better.

O Neill is close to HF line next man in after Reidy and who knows could push harder next year. English could be some player withing next 12-24 months again in the forwards. The age profile there in the starting 15 is still v good and those 3 lads are just finishing or doing leaving cert. There are also a few others from the u20a team that could easily he brought into an extended panel next year. With likes of Mike casey dempsey breen back fully fit next spring will make competition for places huge. We don't need 7 or 8 platers every year. 2 or 3 into the panel is what's needed and that's there for next couple of years. The next 5 years can be planned for too and that's what the academy together with S&C link in is for. The coaching in the senior set up is what brings these guys on loads because of the mindset that's established and the standards that are set. All is well.

Better than empty bs about volumes, etc . etc, etc, ,designed to sound like the alpha and the omega on Limerick players.

I don't think there is any negativity or criticism on the previous point and it certainly isn't BS imo so not sure why you are trying to push it in that direction other than to get a rise out of someone. We have some great potential talent coming through and that has been pointed out but it is not in the same volume as it was previously when the likes of Cian Lynch, Diarmuid Byrnes, Peter Casey, Aaron Gillane, Kyle Hayes etc. etc. were coming through We may never again produce that volume of underage talent again all at once and no one is saying there is anything wrong with that as it may be a freak occurrence but it is at least fair to mention it and acknowledge it so the powers that be do everything in their power to keep standards high across the board.

There's enough talent in the 15 to win at least another all Ireland. But to keep them sharp, to push the squad properly the best pressure is pressure for places from within. Also to prevent burnout and to adapt to new tactics teams may use to counteract getting one or two guys seriously pressing the 15 (and the extended squad )every year is essential. Teams where the pressure to keep your place is high don't get sidetracked. Think all blacks, kk in their prime. If we didn't win another one for 30 years this team would still be the most successful Limerick team of all time. But it Shouldn't stop us being greedy and wanting to put the foot down while we are in the ascendency. Win as much as we can for as long as we can.
Days like this years final and the Munster final in 19 are glorious. Beating serious teams comfortably with 20 mins to spare. Players should be itching to experience these again….but to get the most out of them they need to be fighting tooth and nail to perform every day or the place will go to someone hungrier

I thought Kilmallock and Ballybrown was a real enjoyable game last night. Ballybrown were extremely unlucky with kilmallock only taking the lead in injury time. Thought Coughlan and Aidan O Connor were very good for a very youthful Ballybrown.

Managed to get to this game Saturday night..enjoyable with some fine hurling from both sides.ballybrown will feel this is one they left behind but killmallock kept plugging away and eventually got the win which everyone probably expected, however they will knowe they got out of jail with this win.id like to ask any other neutral who attended, did it look like killmallock received a lot of very soft frees to keep them in this match?

I enjoyed the game. Good first touch from both sides. Yes, a gulf in difference! Cian Lynch, in second gear it seemed throughout. Still very good, and always wanted to give someone else a chance, rather than taking his own point. Ahane kept fighting, and but for Murray in the 'well goal, could have reduced the gap by 6-9 points.
As club hurling goes, it was a good game.

Gutted to hear about the Barry Murphy injury. A right blow just as his chance appeared to be coming. Hopefully both he and PC don't have any set backs with recovery. Corner forward is a specialist position. Don't think someone can be converted except perhaps Barry Nash who can play anywhere

Hopefully that will happen next year with a full league campaign as well.

Best wishes to Barry Murphy on his rehabilitation from injury another Limerick player gone to a cruciate knee ligament injury, I still feel this injury is becoming far too common within the GAA and not much is being done about it.

I'm clearing down a laptop and came across the following post from late 2017. I got some things wrong and a few things right. It's just a blast from the past.
Five Things for John Kiely to ponder in this phase of the season:
1) How will the NaP players integrate back into the panel after the All-Ireland club final? Competition for places is very hot particularly in the middle of the field for players like Ronan Lynch and William O'Donoghue. I assume that Boylan and Grimes can both move across into the senior panel as I further assume that they will be suspended for the final? 2) How many of the veterans can hold on and where? Clearly Nicky will be on goals but who will be full back? I still fancy Ritchie to retain the iconic No 3 jersey but Hickey (who failed in that position in the past but that was a different player then whose only instinct was to attack the ball) now plays the position for his club and will fight hard for a place plus you also have Fanning who did very well at U21 last year plus English (who I think will start at corner back). 3) Where is the best position for Cian Lynch, Gearoid Hegarty, Colin Ryan & Kyle Hayes? I think Hayes will play at No 7. Cian could be anywhere but is doing very well at midfield. Gearoid Hegarty to my mind is a midfielder or half back. My preference for him is as an anchor midfielder which is the same position that his father played. I think that Kiely will pick a half back line of Byrnes, Hannon and Hayes. I thought Colin Ryan was excellent in midfield last year for the U21's. 4) Who are the breakthrough players in the panel who will surprise us all? And more importantly, will be guys who broke through last year maintain their momentum? I'm thinking of Peter Casey, Aaron Gillane and Kyle Hayes in particular. They shone very bright particularly in the U21 championship. Limerick need these guys to take the next step to senior All Star level which I think is in them. 5) Who will get the scores? This is the Achilles heel for Limerick since we lost the deadly duo of Cregan and McKenna. We haven't had enough forwards who can consistently get 4 points a game (with the honorable exceptions of Gary Kirby and AOS). I think Gillane has the skill to be such a player. I believe that Dowling has it in him and that Downes can still rescue his career from a nightmare of injuries. Peter Casey has size limitations but has the attributes to overcome it. Whither Barry Nash, Tom Morrissey and David Dempsey who have all flashed potential but not consistency?

You weren't far off the mark at all. I have a post from a few years ago..about 2017 aswell where I said that Ger Hegarty junior would end up a far better player than Walter Walsh. Id watched him playing for years on diabolical St Patricks teams and I was hopefull once he made the starting 15 that his athletic prowess and will power would see him kick on. In my opinion he's a live contender to replace Hannon at centre back over the next 3 or 4 years. He's got abit more vision and experience than Kyle Hayes who might not like being stuck in centre back. It might stifle Hayes. Hegarty would adapt.
