I think you're spot on about a good start. I'd be hoping that we're not as sluggish as we have been at the beginning of games lately and also it goes without saying that we need our full number of players on the pitch. If a team gets a red card at this stage it's curtains. All teams left are too good not to be able to capatilise. The last day in the league against Waterford both Hayes and Flanagan were sent off. They will definitely try everything to get a reaction. Let's hope lessons have been learned Mads (Limerick) - Posts: 371 - 01/08/2021 17:36:48 2366488 Link 1 |
I don't think discipline will be a problem as I expect both teams to play a very tempo game which will leave no chance for messing..I thought Waterford were excellent at times yesterday however what is giving me confidence is the huge concession of scores..I feel limerick have more and bigger threats than tipp offer,so I'm hoping limerick will scor more..I also think apart from the pacy Hutchinson the other Waterford forwards can be handled by our backs..they have to worry about Kyle and Cian and I don't think they have two near as good,I know they have Barron but I'd prefer Cian all day..looking forward to another high scoring cracker with my vote going to limerick.. Finn has had the measure of Hutchinson in their previous encounters. It'll be a huge help to Limerick if he can contain Dessie one more time.

Good post and agree. If you look at match ups between Limerick & Waterford who would you swap???

I'd swap Gillane out for Stephen Bennett, Barron for O Donovan and thats about it. Id like to find a place for Hutchinson but Flanagan is too effective. Prunty wouldn't weaken the Limerick side either but id prefer Dan Morrissey for experience. bloodyban (Limerick) - Posts: 1710 - 02/08/2021 12:08:44 2366803 Link 0 |
Does anyone think that Kiely will alter the team for the next day? I'd be surprised if D Morrissey and Gillane aren't in from the start. Feel a bit sorry for English he was fired in to the full back position without many games played in that position. Still a great defending corner back to call on if needed off the bench. Barry Nash played out of his skin the last day and I thought he was by far the best player on the fullback line even with Seán Finn present which is saying something. Dropping Gillane could have been the best thing that happened to him from a performance point of view. Graeme Mulcahy has just about recovered from that ankle injury. Think he'd be better suited coming off the bench. He would be a superb guy to come in and tag on a couple of scores down the straight. In championship this year Peter Casey has been our most consistent performer up top. Delighted for him. Mads (Limerick) - Posts: 371 - 02/08/2021 16:44:19 2366927 Link 0 |
Mulcahy is finished id say. He's given many good years but nothing has gone right for him in a while. Time stands still for no man. Id play Gillane from the start but he really does need to watch himself. Id say refs are itching to give a red to Limerick bloodyban (Limerick) - Posts: 1710 - 02/08/2021 20:39:39 2367035 Link 0 |
I think Waterford would take your hand off for that swap with Gillane and Bennett, we saw firsthand his importance to the team in the Munster final, his scores are important but he also offers so much more. The whole dynamic of the forward line changed when he came in, the ball started sticking the second he came on and this immediately helps out the other forwards. I'd love to see Gillanes stats on possessions won from balls played into his channel, there is no other forward who comes close I would say.

Well, in fairness, a ref had two chances to do it V Tipp and did not give a red. It is possible refs are sick of listening to so called Sports Experts focusing on any minor indiscretion Limerick makem while ignoring those of other counties and saying to themselves 'we wont be influenced by this one sided propaganda'. Having said that discipline must be maintained from here on in. As regards Mulcahy, he had a very crucial few plays against Cork and he is still no bad sub to have to come in. I think Dan Morrissey will have to start full back he made a big difference when he came on against Tipperary, Richie English will probably miss out but a fantastic sub to have when he will be called upon, also I hope Mike Casey is close to a return, alot of the starting line-up in the backline might depend on how John Kiely and co want to match up against Waterford's forwards, Sean Finn will probably man mark Hutchinson, but who will pick up Austin Gleeson(Kyle Hayes) and Stephen Bennett(Barry Nash) if they roam and switch positions. Also I want a big game from Declan Hannon he hasn't been bad this season but there is more in him than what he is showing. When the game opens up I want to see Hegarty moved in full forward and hit in a few high balls to him see can he make trouble for Conor Prunty, Also Aaron Gillane everyone has mentioned he will be watched by the referee, he has to concentrate on his game and not let himself get upset by his man, as I said at the start of this season it's up to him whether he wants to be 1 of the top forwards in the game or risk fading away, because there is young guys like Cathal O'Neill and Adam English coming through ready to take his place if he becomes a liability. 07 is on my mind for this game. They owe us one. We will need to be at full intensity from the v beginning to come through this. Southsham (Limerick) - Posts: 752 - 03/08/2021 12:27:29 2367209 Link 0 |
Anyone know if there's a special train service for the game?? hamstring (Limerick) - Posts: 318 - 03/08/2021 17:33:47 2367356 Link 0 |
Bloodyban, although he has not shone as much, I though in the Semi Final of '18 Donovan had a mighty game and was here there and everywhere and was driving on the team when they there six points down

It was Shane Dowling that hauled Limerick back in 2018 semi-final and also Peter Caseys contribution was enormous. Nicky Quaid save was a match saver. You are putting your head in the sand in regard to Gillane, we need 15 players on the field in order to win the remaining matches. fainleog (Limerick) - Posts: 602 - 03/08/2021 22:31:29 2367423 Link 0 |
You're putting your head in the sand if you think Gillane is the only Limerick player sailing close to a sending off. Flanagan in the last 2 matches got booked and was sent off against Waterford in the league as did Hayes, Hegarty s tackling is regularly highlighted in the media, Byrne's got a suspension after Galway league game Will O'Donoghue is probably 1 of the most physical players in the country-should we leave all of these lads on the sideline for Saturday? No let's get behind them and shout them on in Croker, we won't be winning AI sending out boy scouts.

O Donovan had a fantastic All Ireland final last year aswell and a very good Munster final this year. He is the link man. Great player. I was excluding him from a combined Waterford and Limerick team solely on the basis that Barron is on fire. Gillane is a fine hurler. His touch and free taking are actually getting better and his point taking is good. Stephen Bennett is again playing out of his skin and so dynamic. My main issue with Gillane is his lack of poise when in control of the ball and his snatching at goal chances. His shot in the Munster final was perfect for the keeper. Luckily Flanagan was on hand. Id love to see Gillane in possession count to 2...look up, see if there's a goal chance and go low. That's a minor critique of an excellent player. His discipline is suspect ..but you can age that along as he stays on the field. He has a good edge to him bloodyban (Limerick) - Posts: 1710 - 04/08/2021 09:18:01 2367444 Link 0 |
Absolutely correct, we have a ferocious physical team and its should be used to the maximum along with the skill, speed and movement. In saying that they need to be disciplined and not react like Gillane in the Munster Final. Kilkenny were criticized for being overly physical, I don't think they care 1 jot seen as they won 8/10 All Ireland between 06 and 15 Southsham (Limerick) - Posts: 752 - 04/08/2021 09:35:56 2367448 Link 1 |
Look again, I did not mention Gillane. I appreciate Dowling and indeed that of all the subs, but O'Donovan's display is never mentioned and I think he is a grossly underestimated player.

By the time you count to 2 and look up you will probably have lost posession, Gillane is an instictive and clever forward and in my opinion having followed hurling for a long time one of the best ive ever seen.

When we beat Waterford in 07 they were after coming off the back of two very difficult games against against Cork. No break between games. This will be Waterford's 4th game on the trot which is very unfair on them.
