Replying To Fairplayalways: "This Dublin team wouldnt be jumping around against the Meath team of the 80s or Offaly team of early 70's...a row in the tunnel would mean Brian Fenton might have a great first half but would be subbed "injured" in second...its a sign of the fight gone out of football that there is almost "surprise" that there was a tunnel incident this evening, and more amazing it took the All Ireland final for there to be one, the beating Dublin gave Meath, scoring a third goal with almost last play of the game and the home and hosed, the player bundling the ball into the net should not be remembering anything else of the game...teams are too soft, the clip of the 1975 Munster football final where a Cork and Kerry player decked each other, ref pulls them up and makes them shake hands and get on with it....Dublin will continue to destroy and humiliate teams until some team decides to stand up to them..its easy be a nice sporting and "lovely team" when you are winning...people saying Brian Cody always gracious in defeat, most of the time, I seen him a few times in defeat when he wasnt so nice..nothing wrong with it, if you have no bottle you will always finish second..great Dublin team and all that but no one will lay a hand on any of their star players..." Those were the old days and every country was capable of those antics but nowadays if a county goes back to that sort of stuff they will find them selves falling behind even further than they are at the moment. Live in the past or try to move on and keep up." I find the diving, feigning injury, sledging and cynical fouling that has replaced those occasional bouts of fisticuffs to be a bit unedifying tbh. I know in this day and age we abhor violence with every fibre of our being (ahem) but those old schemozzles were predominately borne from passion and a temporary loss of control. There's a snakeish slyness and premeditativeness about modern day player on player interaction. I'll bet Diarmuid Marsden would have rathered suffer a black eye or swollen lip in the 03 final than be wrongly sent off by a conniving opponent and a gullible referee. Very frustrating,, and for all his faults,, one thing I will say for brolly is he was the only pundit (AFAIK anyway) who called it out. To be fair Ó Rourke always calls it out. He always says they not very manly. The sad thing is its usually the so called hard menthat do the diving. Galway had a little spell under Walsh where we gave it to them ( kerin Sean Andy and Kyne) and that's when Cillian and his ginnit brother started with elbows.. We know where it will end with them.. But rather than condemn it on the SG they hinted that it was a good thing as it 'woke Mayo up'. As others have said if it had been Dublin, Tyrone, Monaghan etc it would have been roundly condemned. I think what the Mayo player did to poor Shane Walsh was much worse the that famous international rules hit on Graham Geraghty because Shane was unaware the Mayo guy was sneaking up behind him as the ball was the other end of the field. I was thinking that too, for all the abuse and "targeting" O'Shea has got down through the years he has stayed admirably calm 99% of the time. AO'S gets an awful lot of stick on field and I think refs conclude that because of his size he is well able for it. He does seem to have a good temperament in fairness.
