If Cavan Beat Dublin. What Shock Equates?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Cavan 16/1 to beat Dublin.

What shock in Gaelic games, or any sport for that matter, would equate to Cavan beating the Dubs?

Kerry hurlers beating Waterford in 1993? Mullinaghta beating Kilmacud Crokes in 2018? Interesting given the Mickey Graham's involvement.

I think it would single handledy be the biggest shock in GAA history. Dublin as defending 5 in a row champions hold all the aces. No other shock comes near what it could potentially be.

The funny thing is, if it were to happen, when people review it they'll say the signs were there!

Dublin's league form wasn't good this year. People are pointing to Cavan's relegation but are flat out ignoring Dublin's relatively poor campaign.

Jim Gavin has gone and despite the Leinster results, Dublin have definitely regressed. McCaffrey is better than McDaid. Brogan is better than P Small. Connolly is better than Bugler. Philly is better than Byrne.

Meath had early goal chances against Dublin and didn't take them. They got hit with a sucker punch and the confidence completely left them. If Cavan get similar chances and, crucially, take them, then we're taking this 2020 Dublin team into unknown territory.

Look. . .a LOT has to go right for Cavan and a LOT has to go wrong for Dublin, but if it were Donegal heading up to Croke Park tomorrow, you'd be laughed all the way back to Letterkenny if you asked for 16/1 odds.

I think the match-ups are as close to perfect as they would be for any team facing Dublin. Faulkner on Con, Clarke on Fenton, Galligan on Mccarthy, Madden on Cooper. Brady on Kilkenny. McLoughlin on Scully. McKiernan on J Small. These are far closer matchups IMO than anyone in Leinster has put to Dublin. And if some of them are won by Cavan then who knows.

I am 100% certain we've the better manager too BTW.

We were longer than 16/1 to win Ulster. We went and won it. The rest of the country doesn't believe in us and that's perfectly understandable. But it also doesn't matter one iota. . .We Believe!

In fairness actually think Cavan match up to Dublin very very well in a good few areas however they don't have enough, Dublin have so many weapons that you put out one fire and another two pop up the other end of the pitch.

But I do think Cavan have the type of players to deal with a lot of Dublin's biggest threats and more to the point - hurt those threats the other way. But it'll be a 3 point salvo from someone like Mick Fitzsimons somehow that'll win the day, always is with the Dubs when you think you have them cornered.

Dublin still won the 2 League games after lockdown. They looked better against Galway then Meath. The early stages of of the league they weren't great, but that's 9 months ago

I think Cavan will perform better then Meath, better keeper and midfield but, Dublin scoring an average of 20 pts a game. I don't think Cavan have the firepower to match that.
But give it their all is a all you can ask

Definitely would be the biggest shock.

Antrim had a really good hurling team in the late 80's and early 90's so not a massive surprise they beat Offaly, who liked being underdogs back then, not heavy favourites.

Kerry were going through their worst phase in modern times, so not a massive surprise they lost to another Munster team besides Cork in that spell.

Kerry were bound to put in a one off brilliant performance in the Munster Hurling Championship after so many decades without a win and Waterford were relatively weak in the 90's.

How Cavan can get even to within 9 points of this Dublin team is totally unthinkable

As shocking a result as when Mr. Burgess and Pat Mustard were off on their rounds.

For what it's worth here are the teams from the U-21 semi in 2014 that we narrowly and controversially lost.

The matchups were pretty even that day and some of our players have no reason to fear their direct opponents.

Dublin: Lorcan Molloy (St Anne's); Ross McGowan (Kilmacud Crokes), David Byrne (Nh Olaf), Robbie McDaid (Ballyboden St Enda's); Eric Lowndes (St Peregrine's), Johnny Small (Ballymun Kickhams), Jack McCaffrey (Clontarf); Paddy O'Higgins (Raheny), Stephen Cunningham (St Sylvester's); Niall Scully (Templeogue Synge St), Shane Carthy (Nh Mearnóg), Paul Mannion (Kilmacud Crokes); Conor McHugh (Na Fianna), Michael Deegan (Donaghmore Ashbourne), Cormac Costello (Whitehall Colmcille).

CAVAN: J Farrelly; B Fortune, K Clarke, P Faulkner; G Smith, C Moynagh, C Brady; L Buchanan, M Argue; P Graham, E Flanagan, A Watson; D McVetty, K Bouchier, J Dillon.

Just for some perspective and I'm not saying we'll win as some posters seem intent on reading Cavan posts as.
