Jim Mcguinness To Galway

Replying To Lockjaw:  "The immediate over the top negative reaction to this is sad. Padharic Joyce is his own man and a brilliant footballing mind. He's hardly going to invite Jim in and allow him to tear up his tactical script is he? It's three weeks out from the Championship, how is a complete overhaul in tactics expected to work in that sort of timeframe?

It's more likely that Jim is just a fresh voice for a few sessions and he'll be looking at the psychological side of things. I've often seen parallels between Galway and Donegal. Both counties have produced great players over the years but haven't achieved as much as they should have. You only have to see the impact Jim had on Donegal's under achieving players - he made them believe. I'd imagine that this is what PJ is trying to tap into. Because undoubtedly Galway do have the players, but do they really have the belief?"
Exactly Lockjaw. Joyce is hardly going to go back to overly negative tactics of the previous regime after bringing in a different philosophy. This is nothing new bringing in a respected fresh voice for a session or two happens in club and inter county set ups regularly I imagine. I think Jim took the Donegal lads for a couple of sessions a couple of years ago too so nothing new. The reasoning as you say is a fresh voice as well as possibly tapping into the psychological aspect among the group an area Jim excels at. From a Donegal perspective I am of course a little torn to see Jim potentially giving an edge to another inter county side but happy to see him back involved. However I would say secretly Joyce is probably not best pleased this video has surfaced. Any notions of a quiet preparation are now gone and the spotlight will certainly be on the Galway footballers for the remainder of this season.

I agree.. I was replying to someone else's negativity

Fair play to all involved, Joyce, Jim and Galway. Its a simple game, give yourself the best chance of being successful and if this works for Galway, fair play.

Scary to think on a Joyce built expansive attack and McGuiness defensive system if they could balance the to. Be fascinating.

Any help from Jimmy is bound to be worth taking. His knowledge of the game is top class. How much of a role is he expected to play?

This is a good move by Pauric Joyce. Jim McG brings a lot to the table in my opinion.

Replying To galwayfan:  "I for one am fuming and it has nothing to do with negative football. Does Jim live in Galway? No. Is this essential work? No. Then throw the book at McGuinness and and Galway Gaa. This is the second time Joyce and co. have broken covid rules (caught training as a unit in during during lockdown).

More to life than football, especially as numbers are rising rapidly in Galway."
Elite sports (intercounty) is permitted. Have you been asleep lately? All intercounty county teams are currently training in preparation for league and championship - as is permitted.
Do you think every intercounty GAA managers and players are currently staying within their county?
Lord save us and bless us.

Good to see Jim back in GAA but I'd rather he was with us in Donegal, no doubt he will be a different voice and a good help to Galway, might give them that extra few % needed to bring Sam to Galway this year.
I don't agree with this negative football narrative with Jim, there is a lot more to the man.

Id imagine it would be a difficult scenario if he was to return to the Donegal setup without being in charge. Maybe too much of a side influence for the current management's liking. Hopefully not the case for Galway. But it just depends on how much of a role he's playing i suppose.

I think if Jim were to come in again it would have to be as manager. Declan has done a good job and got a good team around him anyways including Stephen Rochford. However I am sure Jim's opinion and advice is always available to the Donegal management if and when required. Some of Jim's backroom team are involved with the current set up and it is no secret the close relationship he would have with some of the squad including Michael Murphy.

Replying To gilly1910:  "Personally I don't think this is a good move, as McGuinness would be a very negative coach whereas Joyce would be the exact opposite. So for this to work, McGuinness can't have anything to do with tactics, and instead use him for the mental side of things which he would be brilliant at. Anything more will only end up in Galway reverting back to their awful tactics under Kevin Walsh."
Galway under Walsh and Donegal under McGuinness were not that comparable if you looked closely. Galway under Walsh lacked intensity, Donegal under Jim had it in spades. You're lucky to get the man in, I wouldn't be calling him negative. What is negative? Maybe you mean defensive.. Losing is a negative and the man is a winner. Embrace him!

How did Jim get around the restriction on travel outside your county? Donegal was at level 3 before the rest of the country, would be interested to hear what exemption if any, was given to allow him visit Galway.

No need for an exemption. Elite sport goes ahead as normal. League of Ireland, PRO14, Hockey league etc have all been going ahead without restrictions for the past few weeks. The exact same rules apply to the GAA inter-county teams.

All this talk about Joyce and all out attacking football is a bit of a myth.I watched them in Letterkenny against Donegal and they were just about as defensive a team as I've seen lately. They were using the fast counter attack a fair bit.Maybe this is not the first time Padraic has been consulting his old mate.

He probably used the same method as Michael Fennelly from Kilkenny and John Maughan from Mayo for training with the Offaly hurling and football teams!!!

Very smart, did you think that up all by yourself? At least ours were appointed before corona virus appeared on the scene. Going to a county with a high incidence of covid 19 for a coach is the central point that you missed.

Two counties where numbers are spiking massively & with people dying again & many who are suffering from other illness's, unable to get their treatment because of cancelled appointments due to the pressures on hospitals. This has to be seen in light of the situation currently nationwide & the need to protect people.
But as long as some people get what they want & their agenda, it's all ok.
Totally unacceptable really, regardless of what spin is put on it.

I couldn't agree more, I have never seen a more defensive team than Galway, or at least that was the way they played in that game in Letterkenny back in February. I have to say I was really impressed with them though, some terrific players and they look to have a bit of steel about them. If they can get the balance right, they are going to be a serious force in the next few years. Shane Walsh is as good as any player I have ever seen play the game.

From Galway's point of view, McGuinness could work out well for them. If they get their defence right then they have the attacking players to beat teams.
