Doesn't look like there's a thread on this yet.
It's a real shame that he has had to pack it in at such a young age, but it's a no-brainer when you read what he's been dealing with.
He was the epitome of a naturally gifted hurler. In an excellent Limerick team where he wasn't a regular starter (due to the physical issues he had to deal with I'm sure), he still looked a cut above skill-wise when he came on. He could do things that the others simply couldn't. He was a star on the Limerick team from a very young age.
I'm delighted he got his intercounty All-Ireland, which he has alongside his club title.
While it could have been so much more without this issue, he still left his mark on hurling.

was terribly dissapointed when i heard the news....i really feel for him. to me what made him stand out from others was he's vision and brain unbelievable talent. i umpired a match a few yrs ago i think it was with the na piarsigh u21s and they got a 21 yard free into the goals i was at, he went for a goal and nearly drove the net into the city end terrace .... you always felt when dowling came on something special was going to happen because he had that hurling brain to make things happen. a fierce loss to limerick but am delighted he got his allireland medal in 2018. best of luck going forward and i wouldnt be surprised to see him on the sunday game panel and he has that infectious personality about him . would be a great addition.

A huge loss to Limerick, he gave that x factor. A very unpredictable player, such super skill and ability to change a match. His performance off the bench against Cork in the All-Ireland Semi final completely changed the match and Limerick's year.

A wonderful hurler, it's sad to see such a talent retire so early but he has had a wonderful career. Munsters and an All-Ireland with Limerick and Munster and All-Ireland honours with Na Phiarsaigh.

Given his skill, success and attitude for both my club and county he might just be my favourite hurler of all time

Good luck to him, got his celtic cross before he left. A career cut too short.

Obviously not a hurling fan MesAmis but here goes anyway

Club
2 x DR Harty Cup Medals
1 x senior Club all Ireland
4 x senior Munster Club Medals
5 x Limerick senior club championship medals

County
1 X All Ireland
2 x Munster Championships
1 x National League

All Star - 2014

All this achieved by 27. He should have had another 5 or 6 seasons in him to add to that tally.

Limericks greatest-ever scorer.
Passionate, honest, skillful, extremely self-confident player who thrived on the big matches and always wore his heart on his sleeve, a guy who could light up a hurling match and inspire those around him and the supporters who loved him as well as the general hurling fan. A true Limerick man and legend of the game. I hope to see him involved in the media in the future and wish him all the best in his retirement and hopefully he can get back playing with his club again.
