Would be interested to hear from people about the quirky fans or flags or whatever that they see on match days like I swear there is always a Barbados flag at Tipp games and a giant Tipp jersey that must be older than me. I was at the match, in the old Canal End . I remember a Galway banner behind me saying: 8 out 10 Cats prefer Rabbitte an allusion to the Whiskas cat food advert, and Joe Rabbitte of Galway.

I see some of the Irish sports media are trying to pin the blame for the TransAtlantic slave trade and Racism in the USA on the GAA. They mention John Mitchell quite a bit in this regard. Forgetting to mention the links between Apartheid era South Africa and the IRFU, and also to a lesser extent the racist chanting in the 80's at football matches. Really it is a bit rich the Irish media are desparate to appear trendy and relevant in the current unrest. John Mitchell (whose fellow Irish Conspirator) Was General Thomas Meagher a famous Union General,so both where cut from the same cloth. Mitchell was particularly odious as he served the Condeferates at highest levels and unrepentant afterwards. But when you consider some of the Union Generals like Sheridan (Irish) who was a butcher of the Native Americans likewise Grant who waged a genocidal war on them. Different era, different times, plenty of excuses for these figures, but absolutely none for todays breed of racists.

Sorry to bring the mood down a bit but over the weekend banners went up in a park in Belfast threatening anyone wearing GAA gear. The threats were made by Loyalists and the truth is that being a Gael in many parts of the North and displaying your colours remains a dangerous thing. I don't think many outside Ulster know this. The unofficial Mayo supporters club (Club 51) often bring a variety of huge flags to matches. They were founded in the aftermath of the 2013 All-Ireland final, after which James Horan had commented on the Mayo fans falling quiet as the game entered the final stretch. Yes South to be fair the PSNI and Belfast City Council did act very quickly. The banner and graffiti were removed and the police have opened a Hate Crimes file. Sadly though Unionist politicians have remained totally silent on the threats so no change there.
