Right, here's how it happened.
The Stephen Nolan Show on BBC Radio Ulster contacted Mickey Harte in the Citywest Hotel for a "day after" interview. During the interview, a caller came on air and said that it was great that a "British team had brought back Sam Maguire to the United Kingdom". In typical gentlemanly form, Mickey burst the bubble of this wind-up merchant by thanking him for his well wishes for the Tyrone tem and he also observed that it was great to see people "setting aside their differences" to rejoice in a sporting success. It was mastely on Mickey's part.
Then Gregory Campbell, the North's Miniser of Culture, Leisure and Sport, was called and asked for his reaction. He actually pretended to be unaware of the All-Ireland Final at first and said that he certainly had not watched it as he had spent Sunday afternoon at a memorial service for an RUC man who had been killed in the conflict. When pressed for a reaction, Campbell then said that , well, as the previous caller had observed "this was an international sporting event" and as such the UK winners could be congratulated for defeating the team from the Republic of Ireland.
Unlike the gracious response of Mickey Harte, in other words, Campbell contrived to be typically self-righteous and deeply offensive.
A subsequent caller from Armagh voiced his (and also my) total disgust with the Minister for Sport's calculated insult to those who support the biggest sporting occasion on this island and he spoke of how the Tyrone team had brought huge joy to Ulster gaels and their fans throughout Ireland.
At which point, I switched off the radio. I can only take so much controversy on the day afer the final.

Poor old Gregory. In the words of the Big Man, "Father forgive them for they know not what they do" in other words "ignorance is bliss". Poor old Gregory, lets all say a few Hail Marys for him.

Anyone who was in Sally O's for the live highland radio show with Joe Brolly and other guests would have heard how Joe described him - I'm with Joe Brolly on this one and his father as well for that matter.

Listen hear patrique i dont think your even connected with the GAA in Antrim a supporter yes but connected no! Comments like that wouldnt go down well with anyone up here, so either your simply a wind up merchant or your a nobody.

Gregorys comments where made to belittle tyrones success and they where given more recognition by direct rule ministers in the past. Its the DUP and the failure to recognise nationalist/Irish culture in the north which will lead the stormont executive to fail eventually.

They fail to recognise the Irish language yet again another slap in the face of the GAA and Irish Nationalist people, he is far from politically correct, and the more he makes these sort of comments the further he drives young people towards the past, a seen no one wants to see return.

Patrique away back to where ever you came from Garnaville is it?

Lads, lifes too short to be getting worked up over a statement like that

Hes playing to his own base, and its only giving a stupid satement publicity

Who cares what he said.....and if someone wants to support Tyrone but still call them a British team fair enough......its the All-Ireland title and sooner or later that will sink in!!

North side gael, I totally agree with you. I think it is best to ignore this person and it is obvious he has nothing to do with the GAA and is only on here to cause trouble.

shaneanthony from Sligo said it best. At least yerman Campbell is forced into even mentioning Tyrone's All Ireland win. It must stick in his throat that Northern nationalists have something to celebrate for years to come.

Laugh at him, that's the best medicine for him.

Patrique, was it you who called the Nolan Show with that wind-up remark?

Like others, I find Mr Campbell's caluclated comments to be grossly offensive. However, his intention was to cause offence and to wound the feelings of those who rejoice in Tyrone's victory. It is interesting to note that the great and the good from the Ulster Council and Croke Park were falling over themselves to have their photograph taken with him at the opening of St Brides pitch. I wonder will the same people offer leadership and actually speak out on behalf of their membership - probably not. To be frank, it is the narrow minded bigotry displayed by Gregory which has created the situation which others felt it was justifiable to burn and bomb our clubs and murder innocent, decent people for no other reason than they are members of the GAA. As for Patrique, never mind him. Over the years he has always illustrated a very firm red white and blue line. His next campaign will be to have the Sam Maguire Cup renamed as it is called after a terrorist!!

Agree with most of that fear an charnain. But please don't forget that plenty of atrocities were also visited on ordinary decent people from the other side of the community also for no other reason than their religion.

Parity of Esteem? Whatever happened to that? Are you now in favour of ethnic cleansing instead?

I would fight against that, same way as I fought against the discrimination in the past.

Where are we going to end up if we cannot listen to others?

Besides, his constituents have a choice between Gregory and Joe Brolley's dad.

From what I read on here, most posters would vote for Gregory, as Joe appears to be even mopre unpopular, for speaking his mind.

!984 wouldn't be in it.

And none of this is a wind up.

I think the more airtime ye all give comments like that serves the purpose for them to be made in the first place.

Reminds me of a joke about Ian Paisley going into a coma for 15 years. When he makes up, his aide is there and tells him that he's missed the last 15 years. He asks what's been happening in the world. His aide said "Well, Linfield beat Cliftonville earlier on today."

Big Ian was all chuffed and asked what the score was.
"They beat them by two goals and three points," his aide replied
