I see Declan Bonner saying that Donegal won't be able to field a team for Sunday's McKenna Cup semi-final against Monaghan. DryEye84 (Cavan) - Posts: 10 - 09/01/2020 16:19:59 2258458 Link 1 |
Yeah, they should definitely dip into the U20s to honour the fixture. OGarmaile (Tyrone) - Posts: 248 - 09/01/2020 16:44:05 2258462 Link 0 |
I hope Bonnar sticks to his guns and does not field a team , the scheduling for GAA players is a disgrace and until clubs and counties say stop HQ will just continue to abuse them . ulsterrules (Donegal) - Posts: 259 - 09/01/2020 16:52:20 2258466 Link 4 |
Very disappointed with Bonnar. This is pulling a stunt. Unfortunately for him, very few people care now because it's only the McKenna Cup and less will care in a weeks time. He should have been aware of this issue when he picked his panel at the start of the year. Shouting at the top of your voice doesn't make you right. The U20s are playing Roscommon on Saturday in the Leo Murphy cup, And then some of them boys are playing sigerson with lyit on Sunday. Tyrion (Donegal) - Posts: 159 - 09/01/2020 19:02:44 2258498 Link 0 |
Do you honestly think (at the start of the year) Declan Bonner was overly concerned about The McKenna cup. His priority is division one league and championship. The McKenna is about trying to give younger lads experience in intercounty football, And unfortunately he has a panel depleted with flu, U 20s playing a cup game on Saturday and others then playing sigerson on Sunday. So much for player welfare or burnout in January of all times ffs. Tyrion (Donegal) - Posts: 159 - 09/01/2020 19:11:37 2258501 Link 2 |
Well done Declan. Putting his panel first of treating his players like dogs. Maybe HQ will listen. But more likely that they will fine Donegal for not working these amateur players to the bone. ulsterrules (Donegal) - Posts: 259 - 09/01/2020 19:25:56 2258507 Link 1 |
It's the HEG fault for the timing of Sigerson. They moved into an earlier start this year, but that doesn't improve things, . Kieran Molloy has a All Ireland final in a few weeks and involved in Sigerson. He played a Sigerson final the same day after playing for Corofin 2 years ago. Well done to the donegal management team. It's about time people stood up to these people. The ulster council have always treated county's and clubs with contempt . No doubt the county will get a fine which I hope they refuse to pay too. Treat amateur players with some respect. rorysboys (Donegal) - Posts: 2392 - 09/01/2020 20:01:40 2258518 Link 1 |
Bonner could've protected his squad and just lined out 15 club lads, guys who dream of playing for Donegal but aren't at that level. A taste of the setup would surely motivate these lads. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5010 - 09/01/2020 20:16:02 2258523 Link 1 |
Donegal will play the fixture. The_Fridge (Tyrone) - Posts: 2088 - 09/01/2020 20:33:56 2258525 Link 0 |
Monaghan could do the decent thing and stand down their own u20 and sigerson players for the fixture. MadgeKing (Cavan) - Posts: 493 - 09/01/2020 20:46:26 2258527 Link 1 |
Well Done Declan. It's easy for posters here to say that he should line out club players but the reality is that club players have been lying about all Christmas and to expect them to pull on the Donegal jersey against what is a decent team is unfair on them. We also have players injured and on the sicknote at the minute. It's a nothing competition that will be forgot about in a few weeks. Well done Declan. Put the players first. Bonner just playing game sand looking for attention. He had over 40 players in training for the last few months , 13 of them playing for Collages at weekend and another few with under 20 team also at weekend , but still over 20 players available for him . culmore (None) - Posts: 1398 - 09/01/2020 21:55:21 2258544 Link 6 |
The u20s have a game at the weekend as well. I guess he could have drafted in club players but probably more hassle than its worth. The fixtures calendar is a disgrace, I think a lot of managers will back the stance taken by Bonner.

What utter nonsense.....this is Bonner throwing toys out of the pram as he isn't getting his way.....Sigerson should be the priority for these young lads not the Mc Kenna cup and why are university lads having to e en be used in a pre season competition ffs.....plenty of players in Donegal who could have been used, offered a chance and leave the Sigerson lads alone in January

So where should the colleges be played???? Sigerson is the top university competition many of these players are on scholarships to play gaelic games for their college....on the other hand the Mc Kenna is a pre season competition, bit of perspective needed here....the colleges have already squeezed their competition as much as they can so it's up to inter county managers to show some common sense and put their players first

Forget about the u20s. Couldn't he name a completely experimental team of decent club players, who have never played county football, and win, lose, or draw it makes absolutely no odds whatsoever, he may even spot some decent talent to promote to the county panel. In this way, he would still be getting his dig in to the GAA, by showing complete disregard for the competition/fixture schedule. I commend Bonner and his stance. The move will bring plenty of attention to the ludicrous fixture planning. Plus Declan has recent history with the Ulster Council and the GAA over rigid nonsense fixture scheduling with the county under 21's from a couple of years ago. Take the fixture planning away from the GAA to an independent body and problem solved. But unfortunately the GAA are too proud and stubborn to do such a thing. panamasam (Australia) - Posts: 2779 - 10/01/2020 00:03:37 2258585 Link 0 |
He has done the right thing. It's a Mickey Mouse competition anyway. tirawleybaron (Mayo) - Posts: 1105 - 10/01/2020 06:51:54 2258590 Link 0 |
