Seemed like a strange transfer. I would have thought with Schlingerman going back to soccer and David Clarke not getting any younger there might have been an opening in Mayo. Judas is a harsh label. Interesting topic though... roundball (Tipperary) - Posts: 2514 - 04/01/2020 12:59:32 2257267 Link 0 |
Agree with the Judas thing it's a bit harsh a label. It is possible for someone to have connections/love for 2 counties Breezy (Limerick) - Posts: 1236 - 04/01/2020 13:05:52 2257268 Link 0 |
Declan Darcy maybe. Playing with his father's home county of Leitrim for years and then moving back to his native county of Dublin which caused a shock here in Leitrim. Can't blame him I suppose but he won more with Leitrim than with Dublin which is unusual. the_ayatollah (Leitrim) - Posts: 6 - 04/01/2020 14:01:49 2257281 Link 0 |
Seánie Johnston's transfer from Cavan to Kildare. They weren't a rival of ours, but the manner of the transfer and shenanigans around it really angered a lot of Cavan people, and there's still bitterness over it. The fact he even togged out and played 30 seconds of a hurling match for his new Kildare club to rubber-stamp the transfer stuck in manys a craw. And he then kicked a few points against us when they beat us in the championship that summer to really rub it in. But like another Biblical figure who was on the road to Damascus, he saw the light and and returned to the Cavan fold for a few more years! It angered a lot of people here too, the strokes that was pulled to get him to play was shameful stuff. Then he done absolutely nothing. They would have been far better off putting that effort into cultivating home grown talent.

Good stuff. I'm fairly sure the thread is about transfers though, Not about what counties lads are born in. Meathmaverick (Meath) - Posts: 106 - 06/01/2020 08:42:16 2257665 Link 0 |
He was some hurler though. Shortest hurling playing career ever?

Played his whole club career with Aughawillan and won won several county titles with them and won a Connaght under 21 and Connaght senior championship with Leitrim too. Never disliked him for going to Dublin when it was his County of birth and he gave everything to Leitim and Aughawillan for practically his whole career which was a massive commitment

Was he ever working down there at all or was he still working in Cavan?

I think Sean Boylans mother was from Leitrim, as opposed to him being born there. Colm O'Rourke was definitely poached from us though :)

Boylans mother is from cloone in Leitrim. COlm O'Rourke is from Aughavs and moved to Meath with his family when he was eight, hardly poached from us

I'm well aware of that. I was making a small joke, hence the smiley face. Have a great day!

If we're to start recruiting on that basis then we'd happily roll the green and red carpet all the way down from Donegal to get Michael Murphy, even at 30+. Not a chance of it happening though... your loyalty has more to do with where you were brought up, your friends, neighbours etc, and rightly so. No I think mute is the right word, people should refrain from speech/talking when on about Ballagadereen playing with Mayo.
