If Colm Galvin is fit, he has to play. He is one of our best players. I think he could play in half backs as his delivery and hurling brain is top class but to be fair to SOH he has been solid so far. Dave Mac could play at 5 and Galvin to midfield if needs be. It will depend on fitness and form. Clareman (Clare) - Posts: 1056 - 30/06/2020 16:26:32 2282396 Link 0 |
Not a bad team but as you say we have no real luck always missing a key player even if only to improve the bench Conlon Duggan Jamie Shanahan all massive losses in 2018 missed Cunningham Reidy Kilkenny won so much but rarely without top men clooney (Clare) - Posts: 984 - 30/06/2020 17:12:31 2282404 Link 0 |
It would be great if next year we get a full panel to pick from for the championship. As has been said it has been quiet a while since we have had everyone available. We dont exactly have a huge pool of top quality players to choose from to start with. I honestly think we will struggle this year, the limerick game looks a step too far. Then ideally I would like to get dublin or laois in the qualifiers as i cant see us chalegning anyone else this season. hurlingexpert (Clare) - Posts: 1941 - 07/07/2020 15:49:53 2283352 Link 0 |

Not feeling very positive at all for the limerick match. We are down a lot of players. No conlon, duggan or colm galvin available. Seems that ian galvin, jamie shanahan, mikey o'malley, rory hayes, conor mcgrath are not involved either. All of them wouldn't have been involved but ian galvin and shanahan would have a lot to offer. hurlingexpert (Clare) - Posts: 1941 - 30/09/2020 08:49:07 2294830 Link 0 |
Conor McGrath?!? No Jamsie O Connor either. bloodyban (Limerick) - Posts: 1710 - 05/10/2020 17:54:46 2295886 Link 0 |

I'd say you have the personnel pretty spot on, maybe Malone to 10 and McCarthy to 7. He had a good league at 7 and Limerick half forward line are very strong in the air. I would also suggest Ryan maybe to 5 but we are robbing peter to pay Paul. Reidy to 11 and Cunningham to 15 maybe as well perhaps. Podge also gone now, I don't think he would have started though. Ian Galvin not involved either. It could get ugly but I hope we get some fire back. The spirit in the park last year against Cork when the chips were down is what is needed. Limerick are my favourites for the All Ireland. Very strong 24/5 man squad. Tipp probably have a slicker 15 but don't have the depth even if Bonar is back and some u21s come through. You would have to wonder what is amiss in Clare Hurling both Galvins now Podge gone for this year heard the training is fairly brutal thought so may be a factor still a decent line up available to us. clooney (Clare) - Posts: 984 - 07/10/2020 14:23:20 2296262 Link 0 |
Im not sure why ian galvin is not involved. But colm isnt there because of his injury. Podge probably stepped away as he realised he wont get a game. But apparently he is joining the football panel. So that's good news for clare gaa. I actually heard recently that rory hayes is still involved. hurlingexpert (Clare) - Posts: 1941 - 07/10/2020 16:49:10 2296277 Link 0 |
No point I suppose in crying over spilt milk but we were in a really good place in 2018 were flying in Munster Final but allowed ourselves to be bullied in 2nd Half but had a great All Ireland Campaign puck of a ball it unravelled badly in 2019 bar spirited win in Ennis V Cork. clooney (Clare) - Posts: 984 - 08/10/2020 13:00:44 2296399 Link 0 |
2017 and 18 Munster finals are the lowest of the low for me. 17 we were woeful, picked the wrong side, played poor, yet on 69th minute we were 1 point behind. in 2018, totally agree, no cuteness before half time to take a yellow and stop the goal, 4 point lead when we should have been 7 or 8 up. Then in second half no leadership when things got tough. Bugler, Donnellan and Dillon were sidelined in 17 and I think their absence cost us at least 1 Munster title. You cant beat experience. They had more to give, same with Colin Ryan. It was there for Clare and they couldn't take it both years. Only ourselves to blame. Pat Kelly Dillon Domhnall O Donovan Gudgie Shanahan Ian Galvin Podge Collins Peter Duggan Nicky O Connell Colin Ryan Conor McGrath Darach Honan and Conor Ryan were very unfortunate with injury and a medical condition. All of those lads I listed are under 31 or under, in fact most are sub 30 and not injured but not involved for various reasons. Nicky and Colin are the same age as Paudie and Brendan Maher and they still going strong and both have had bad injures. There is something wrong in Clare alright. Perhaps Lohan is clearing the decks and just going to go with new blood which is fair enough and we have some exciting talent coming through, but that level of turnover is chronic. Reminds me of Limerick post their brilliant 3 in a row teams and Galway in late 90s/00s before they got it right and challenged consistently with the same group, Clareman (Clare) - Posts: 1056 - 08/10/2020 14:04:40 2296416 Link 0 |
Sorry I think Patrick Kelly is 34 so my error.

Jog on yourself. People wheel the 'Conor McGrath' narrative out every year. He went when he should have. He was great when he was young and got steadily slower and worse as the years went by. I shudder to think of him looking at a back at games near his end and him taking 6 or 7 steps in a vain effort to get past and then getting whistled for obviously over carrying. Hes a good club hurler now .

Absolutely agree that Clare jettison older guys far too readily. Nicky and Tots , Pat Donnellan went too early. Ryan ect ...Partly its because they still get treated as if they were 21 when they needed minding and partly because they just went and abit of ego came into it. They weren't prepared to be a squad player like Tom Condon for Limerick .Bad for Clare all round bloodyban (Limerick) - Posts: 1710 - 14/10/2020 13:15:02 2297526 Link 0 |
Thats a fair enough analysis Conor was superb for a few years but there was a lot asked of those Cratloe players for a few years so he did lose a bit of pace and to a relatively small player is a massive loss he also has a demanding career so I am sure he made right decision. The problem for Clare is that we only seem to get a good team every decade or so you always need a few good players coming on to panel. There are a few now in Mark Rodgers Shane Meehan ect clooney (Clare) - Posts: 984 - 16/10/2020 16:31:40 2298130 Link 1 |
wow..ive never seen such player fallout as whats happening in clare. Imagine winning an all ireland in 2013 not that long ago with a young enough team and how many are gone from it ,early retirements, injuries or whatever else is going on. its unfathomable. A lot from the great u21 teams never stood up and developed either. Someone like Brian Cody would have never let that happen. The talent that was in Clare for about 3 or 4 years at u21 and senior was serious and it will have to go down as one county who never lived up to their potential and i dont think its going to be recovered now which is a huge loss to hurling countrywide. preddan (Kildare) - Posts: 801 - 17/10/2020 16:14:41 2298399 Link 0 |
I do not agree with the over-the-top negativity here. Of the 2013 team, McInerney, O Connor, Galvin (recuperating after injury, apparently), Kelly, Conlon, O Donnell, and Morey (sub mainly in 2013) are all still involved. Also, Aaron Cunningham, who probably would have been on the 2013 team were it not for injury (incidentally, his injury probably allowed Shane O Donnell to make his incredible breakthrough) is also back in contention. I think Cathal McInerney may also be on the panel. I am not sure if Podge has officially retired, but it seems he would have his work cut out to get back into the team anyway. Personally, I would like to see him still involved, not least because of the character he is, but even without him I think that is a good return of players from seven years ago. Why did the team not win more? We can all have our own speculations (some might consider that they simple weren't talented enough collectively). In my opinion, it was a combination of a number of reasons. Firstly, perhaps they won the big prize too early, and also without defeating any of the big powers of the time en route. Secondly (and I feel more importantly), it may have been down to the management of the time, and the tactics that were pursued in the subsequent years. The sweeper system may not have allowed the individual players in defense to grow and develop into their positions. Was McInerney wasted at full back? Players like Paul Flanagan and Stephen O Halloran (delighted he is there now) were never given a decent chance, with the result that we always seemed very threadbare at the back. Also, I feel that particular group of lads, for all their talent, were both physically lacking in key positions and did not have enough natural leaders to turn games around when the going got tough. Are we in such a bad position now? I don't think so. The survivors from 2013 now form the spine of the team. Experience has developed their leadership skills, and they are now better in a dog fight than a few years ago. We have an abundance of options in the forwards. although it remains to be seen whether either Fitzgerald or McMahon will make the grade at centre forward. Until they prove me wrong, I think young Ryan and Aidan McCarthy have the potential to quickly develop into serious players for the cause. Ryan Taylor also seems to have a lot of potential. Corry has done well so far also, albeit not yet seriously tested. Duggan, Reidy, Brown, Golden and Malone are also serious players to have in the team / squad. Are Rogers and Meehan training with the seniors now? Also, has it been officially confirmed that Ian Galvin will not be involved this year? I think this is a great year to blood new players in the championship, and also for the new management to find its feet. I think much more worrying for Clare hurling now that the few players who are opting out of the panel during this strange year is the decreased activity from the likes of 'Hurling Expert' and 'Lohan's Red Helmet' on this forum when Brian Lohan needs their invaluable insight the most to help him pick the team.
