Replying To Tom1916:  "Phelim Brady's Darkley Co Armagh

Oh list to the lay of a poor Irish harper,
And scorn not the strings in his old withered hands,
But remember those fingers, they once could move sharper,
To raise up the strains of his dear native land.

It was long before the shamrock, the dear isle's loved emblem,
Was crushed in its beauty by the Saxon lion's paw,
I was called by the colleens around me assembling
Their bold Phelim Brady, the Bard of Armagh.

How I love to muse on the days of my boyhood,
Though four score and three years have flitted since then.
Still it gives sweet reflection, as every first joy should,
For free-hearted boys make the best of old men.

At the fair or the wake I could twirl my shillelagh,
Or trip through a jig with my brogues bound with straw.
Faith, all the pretty girls in the village and the valley
Loved bold Phelim Brady, the Bard of Armagh.

Now tho' I have wander'd this wide world over,
Still Ireland's my home and a parent to me.
Then O, let the turf that my bosom shall cover
Be cut from the ground that is trod by the free.

And when in his cold arms Death shall embrace me,
Och! lull me asleep with sweet 'Erin-go-Bragh',
By the side of my Kathleen, my first love, then place me,
Then forget Phelim Brady, the Bard of Armagh."
Liam Clancy's rendition of that song is hard to beat. I've never seen all the verses before, so thanks for posting that.

Plenty of opportunity for controversy with that one. The most obscure must be Redmond O'Hanlon though in Armagh, or maybe Bishop MacHale in Dunmore."
A candidate for obscurity and perhaps most unpatriotic would be Tulsk Lord Edwards

This got me wondering about the proportion of clubs in a typical league that are not named for a patriot or a saint. So I took a look at the Dublin football championship. Only four out of 16 are not.

Skerries
Castkeknock
Clontarf
Raheny

Is it the same elsewhere.

Majority of meath is just a placename. We've a few saints but very few patriots.
In senior we've Nobber, Summerhill, Skryne, Dunshaughlin, Ratoath, Donaghmore/Ashbourne, Moynalvey, Seneschalstown, Curraha and Simonstown Gaels

Then Wolfe Tones, St. Colmcilles, Gaeil Colmcille, Na Fianna, Navan O'Mahonys and St. Peter's Dunboyne.

In the remaining 43 clubs you've Saints Mary, Brigid, Patrick, Michael, Paul, Ultan and Vincent, plus Drumbaragh Emmets. Not sure how you'd classify "Clann na nGael"....

To the best of my knowledge all others are just a placename.

In Wexford there are clubs called Sarsfields, Liam Mellows and Rapparees that I can think of. There was a club named after Daniel O Connell I think, but they folded.

From what I have been able to ascertain...

On Robert Emmet - 15 GAA clubs use 'Emmets' in their name.
On Patrick Sarsfields - 13 GAA clubs use Sarsfields in their name.

Any others are 10 or below in terms of usage stats.
These are stats for GAA clubs in Ireland only (not overseas clubs).

Note: There are additional 3 clubs who use 'Emmetts' in their name as opposed to Emmets, which are not counted in above stat. I don't know why there are 'Emmetts' as well as 'Emmets' and whether they are meant to be the same (Anyone from Lisnaskea, Brocagh or Eskra might be able to shed light there).

Longstone GAA club in County Down were named after Robert Emmett. They played under the name Longstone Emmetts in their early days. Kilcoo are named after Eoghan Ruaidh O'Neill. There are other clubs named after him, one in Tyrone I think.

People give the DUP a hard time but they have shown themselves to be great patriots in helping to reinvigorate a sleeping Irish nationalism in the North. They have really adhered to the Bobby Sands mantra that everyone, Republican or otherwise, has there own particular part to play.

Sometime far in the future you could have GAA teams from the Falls and the Shankill Road playing a match; the Arlene Foster Crocodiles v Nigel Dodds' Deputies.

On the Eoghan Ruaidh O'Neill point, there are 2 other clubs, both in Tyrone - Owen Roe O'Neill's in Leckpatrick and Brackaville Owen Roes. There are up to 10 clubs with O'Neill in the name, named after a few different people.
