It has potential to be the best stadium in country. Just sort out the parking, which every time I've been there has been non-existent. You drive up onto a pavement in an estate somewhere, abandon and hope. Clones, for all the abuse it gets, is actually ran well and parking isn't an issue essmac (Tyrone) - Posts: 1141 - 13/10/2020 13:22:42 2297253 Link 0 |
I'm not too worried about all that. More so our unionist politicians who have set out to prevent this from day one. If they can find an angle they will run with it!

Handy for north Armagh gaels as theres a decent train service, 15 minute walk from Finaghy. Park and ride service would be helpful.

Its a bit like Croker your always better parking away from the ground a bit. There are 3 shopping complex areas near the stadium and plenty of streets as well. With a motorway leading into the area its a lot smoother than a day trip to Clones.

There's been a bit of a renaissance in Belfast in recent times in football and hurling. There's been a lot of good work done at youth level which is starting to pay off. Belfast sides are now competing at the business end of senior Championahips and that can only be good for the entire province. The city and Ulster deserve a decent stadium and that's no disrespect to Clones whose atmosphere is fantastic. Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9785 - 13/10/2020 14:09:01 2297277 Link 2 |
Horrendous idea. I can't believe this nonsense of a plan is actually going ahead. Wally (Tyrone) - Posts: 922 - 13/10/2020 14:15:39 2297279 Link 0 |
I'm sure Pauric would be pleased. I think his anniversary has just passed 10 years maybe? Ulsterman (Antrim) - Posts: 9785 - 13/10/2020 14:16:17 2297281 Link 0 |
This is great for Belfast and Antrim GAA, and I think it's an exciting move overall. Ulster Final day in West Belfast will be an exciting day out I think, but the old soul in me will pine for Clones on matchday. There was always a bit of magic about Clones on Ulster Final day so we will be losing something no doubt, but hopefully we will create new memories and feelings in the years to come. I know, next they'll be hosting all irelands in the far East of the country, imagine!

And they're off. I always found Tyrone 'Gaels' the most vehement against Belfast. I think there's an arrogance and superiority GAA mindset with them that thinks they are the centre of the Ulster GAA.

My theory is a stadium like the rebuilt Casement will be run like a business; becoming a mini croke park. The plans appear to have significant facilities which I'm sure they'll use as part of their business plan. In the same way Leinster GAA used to use Croke Park for the vast majority of their championship games certainly from the semi final stage onwards Ulster are likely to do the same. sam1884 (UK) - Posts: 999 - 13/10/2020 15:02:01 2297293 Link 2 |
I would counter that and say that there appears to be an arrogance and air of superiority to almost all of your posts. You do realise that not everyone has to agree to this plan just because it's based in Belfast. Please provide some evidence that basing the provincial stadium in the centre of the province is not a good idea. Why is it that you are allowed to passionately argue for this stadium to be based in Belfast but others cannot do the same for their own location. Clearly you have a vested interest in this regardless of the practicalities of it. Wally (Tyrone) - Posts: 922 - 13/10/2020 15:11:14 2297294 Link 1 |
I believe that first and foremost culturally, politically and symbolically the new stadium must be in Belfast. Unionism has Windsor and Ravenhill. The Irish Nationalist community must be equally represented in the city. There are 2 motorways leading into Belfast, access in and out of big games should be easier maybe apart from Donegal folk. Facilities wise the new Casement will be able to cater better for the fans, players and media needs (when Covid hopefully passes). Undoubtedly eventually concerts and other events will be held in the new ground which will bring income into Ulster too. Having said all this there ARE GAA people within the province who are inherently and vehemently anti Belfast. They come out with dismissive and arrogant bulls**t about the city and Antrim 'not being Gaelic Games places'. Finally I get well pi**ed off listening to the anti Belfast crowd GAA crowd within Ulster who have flocked into Belfast for decades for their well paid public sector and teaching jobs YET who aren't prepared to give Belfast anything back.

Question is, where's Derry Gary? Yourjoking (USA) - Posts: 725 - 13/10/2020 16:25:47 2297308 Link 0 |
Please explain to me, an Ulster man who likes rugby, how 'Unionism has Ravenhill'. It is as much my team and your team as it is a Unionist's from Ballymena. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5193 - 13/10/2020 16:43:43 2297310 Link 13 |
I agree. I support Ulster and the crowd is more mixed these days no doubt. However there is also still very much a middle class Unionist atmosphere and narrative around rugby within Ulster including some of the support. Don't be under any illusions about that.

At least some thing is happening about Casement Park. Hell will be frozen over before Walsh Park is done. Canuck (Waterford) - Posts: 2866 - 13/10/2020 17:51:30 2297331 Link 0 |
