John Galvin was one of the two or three best midfielders in Ireland for a decade and undoubtedly the best midfielder in 2010 and he never even got one All Star. It is true they have long been a joke.

What does anyone think of Loughnane's comments. He has a crude way of putting it but for me he's not far off the mark. Personally i don't agree with Padraig Walsh or Cathal Barrett being selected. I thought Paul Morris roasted Cathal Barrett in AI Semi Final, if i was Sheedy i would have taken him off to be honest. Was he that could in Munster, i really cant remember? Also i don't think Padraig Walsh had a good year. Was very poor in Leinster and All Ireland finals. Can't get an All Star after that. Incidentally the all star team was identical to the Sunday game team of the year bostonredsox (Wexford) - Posts: 4368 - 01/11/2019 09:13:15 2246934 Link 0 |
Fennelly baffled me, I think bubbles deserved it but I would have even picked Mullen, john Donnelly and rory o'connor before fennelly aswel

According to the GAA website, Tipperary 'are represented in every line of the field". Did they mean to swap Bubbles in the half forward line for someone else and just forgot to make the change ? GalwayMan (Galway) - Posts: 91 - 01/11/2019 12:45:17 2246980 Link 0 |
Walsh doesn't deserve an All Star, as for an out and out No3 it's Liam Ryan or Huw Lawler for me but sure they mix and match everyone to fit someone else in. bricktop (Down) - Posts: 2503 - 01/11/2019 14:50:42 2247006 Link 0 |
Loughnane may have a point but as is often the case he is simply being negative without offering better alternatives - at least not in the excerpt quoted on HS (I don't buy his newspaper so I haven't read the full article). Which of the Tipp backs would he exclude and who would he put in their place? Besides, if the Tipp backline was so weak, then their forwards must have been brilliant to enable them win the All-Ireland. Should Loughnane then not question why Tipp have only one forward on the team while Kilkenny have two, but maybe consistent logic might not be his strong point.

In fairness, if I'm a journalist or pundit and there's a deadline looming for 500 words for my editor, giving out about the All Stars is a handy way of filling out a page of waffle that's impossible to objectively prove wrong. It's the easiest, laziest commentary possible to say "I think X is better than Y". CastleBravo (Meath) - Posts: 1639 - 01/11/2019 19:27:33 2247051 Link 0 |
Paudie just played very game bar one at centre back! Huw Lawlor was never an all star this year. Could well be in the future but not a chance this year. tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 01/11/2019 20:51:13 2247105 Link 0 |
No....tipp apparently haven't had a half forward line in years so in tipp we don't count that as a line on the field!!

Mullen all day long! He was probably in the top 3 forwards in the country this year. Fennelly was just about Kks 3rd best

O'Dwyer was utterly destroyed in the Munster and should have been off for a 'tackle' that was far worse than Ritchie Hogan's.

I didn't read the whole article but I take his point. Wexford probably should have at least two in the back 7 incl goal keeper. Tipp were all over the place in Limerick and for a lot of the semi final. You have Reid and Fennelly who got theirs on some good games where as when Bubbles and Mcgrath have quiet games they seem to get judged differently. All 4 were quiet in certain games. Having said that the only change I'd have in the forwards is Mullen for Fennelly. Fennelly hasnt left the full forward position all year and hasnt played on the wing in a few years either. tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 01/11/2019 22:36:24 2247141 Link 0 |
What tackle? Almost every player on this years team was destroyed at some point. Even the two limerick all stars - which I don't disagree with as all stars by the way.

The perception was when Clare won the all Ireland in 2013 that it was a young mans game. Was that a once off? tiobraid (Tipperary) - Posts: 4119 - 02/11/2019 23:56:45 2247321 Link 0 |
Do you think any Limerick player should have got an All-Star this year..?
