Great to see Mountain South will have a sporting use after all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SixtiesKid (Galway) - Posts: 360 - 19/10/2018 09:08:36 2147206 Link 3 |
It's an absolute farce and there seems to be almost no accountability. I've also noticed that there's very little journalistic appetite at a local level to dig into the issue. I understand that may be difficult for some as they may have personal relationships with the people involved, but the lack of detailed coverage of something which has put an albatross over the county's finances for years to come, has been pretty disgraceful. Lots of issues, recently resigned CEO, no floodlights at Pearse Stadium & the whole controversy over previous planning issues, the conflict with residents over Pearse Stadium & parking, only making €76,000 out of renting the Stadium to a guy who sold out 60,000 tickets at an average of €90 a ticket, approx €5.4 Million & the biggest controversy of all, the awaited report on financial irregularities that was sent to Croke Park, this report seems to have disappeared for some reason.

In fairness the report to Croke Park, I think it was on the insistence of Croke Park that the report not be raised at the last AGM because there is a binding non-disclosure agreement involved. But agreed on all of your points, looks very bad. The_DOC (Galway) - Posts: 812 - 19/10/2018 12:11:36 2147233 Link 0 |
The whole ed sheeran thing is baffling!!! They did install a cctv system which reportedly cost €30,000 meaning they only profited €106,000. When you compare that to what Páirc Uí Chaoimh received.......they are poles apart. I smell a rat tbh.

If nobody has done wrong then why is there a "binding non-disclosure agreement in place" The GAA supporter who pays his/her money to watch and support the county should be entitled to know. We have been subjected to controversy after controversy from Kenny Park to Duggan Park and now our headquarters and at the end of the day nothing happens and nobody is held accountable. Something has to change!

I'm not defending it at all, I'm in agreement...just saying as to why it was not discussed at the latest county board meeting.

I think this is Connacht Rugby's third attempt at developing a stadium so let's see will they do it this time. They are only tenants in the Sportsground. Likewise Galway United are only tenants in Terryland and they not investing in anything. Comer brothers did and they will be collecting rent if it's a success. As for the concert; go to the Salthill/Knocknacarra AGM and see the boost in the accounts for the money they got for renting out the Praire. Also look at all the infrastructure changes in a Pearse Stadium for hosting concerts. Hollo core boundary on far side off pitch had to be cut down and replaced with fencing. They won't have to spend as much again. I reckon there will be floodlights there by 2020. They don't have the money now. ref (Galway) - Posts: 259 - 19/10/2018 22:05:18 2147304 Link 1 |
Lol, Why don't they have the money now ? Two other organisations in the city have had floodlights for years. The other two developments are going ahead, one is well under way & the other is going ahead on lands purchased from the GAA at a massively reduced price in what has to be one of the major embarrassments in sport. How an organisation can end up in a multi million debt & nobody is questioned or an investigation carried out should be ringing alarm bells but then again a recent report on financial irregularities seems to have got lost as well. Time for Primetime investigation or something on those lines.

To many well meaning amateurs on county board. I don't mean to be derogitive at all as most (not all) do it in their spare time for free. Mayonman (Galway) - Posts: 1928 - 20/10/2018 21:27:36 2147407 Link 1 |
Not sure if the Mountain South purchase is all it is cracked up to be. It is very notiable in the local media of the lack of support for the idea from any local soccer pundits. Pinhead (Galway) - Posts: 6 - 21/10/2018 00:47:13 2147424 Link 0 |
There's an explanation for that absence. Both Salthill and Mervue especially, have no time for Galway United. This development would concern them greatly as it would be a significant game changer in the Soccer scene. They would be no longer the be all and end all for any youngster with aspirations of playing elite soccer in Ireland or abroad! And there's certainly nowhere the length of column inches devoted to soccer as there is to GAA in local media. FallenStar (Galway) - Posts: 435 - 21/10/2018 15:09:23 2147468 Link 1 |
One of the sickening aspects of the moutain south fiasco is that one of the key officials involved in purchasing the land, got a position in the hurling board this year. Its sickening to see so many incompetent officials being nominated by the hurling clubs in Galway for positions in the county board. If Al capone was nominated by a hurling club for a position in the county board all the other hurling clubs would back him. Its time for the hurling community to have a good hard look at themselves. devrandom (Galway) - Posts: 77 - 21/10/2018 21:00:15 2147533 Link 4 |
If Mervue and Salthill were quiet then that is a good sign. As another poster said they have no tie for Galway United. To be straight they have no time for anyone other than themselves. Their attempt at LOI soccer was a laughable vanity project spearheaded by certain individuals. One man and his dog at games all the time draining cash out of the club that should be used on the promotion of the game and facilities in their locality. Anyway this is a GAA thread and the success or otherwise of Mountain South by another code does not change the disaster it has been for the Galway County Board. To be fair mistakes happen, but it is how you react from them that is important and I am not filled with confidence! Mayonman (Galway) - Posts: 1928 - 22/10/2018 10:30:21 2147613 Link 0 |

Developing Pearse stadium was a good idea, but to go one step further and develope Mountain South was silly. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2665 - 12/12/2018 13:34:00 2154082 Link 0 |

One of the main recommendations of the audit is to have a commercial manger. Hard to believe in 2018 with a county the size of Galway that none was there up to now! galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2665 - 15/12/2018 23:02:12 2154380 Link 0 |
