No Fans Allowed On Croke Park Pitch

Interesting to hear Seamus Hickey saying that its great for the team to get to celebrate with their families and team mates on the field without the pitch invasion.

It was the tradition for years that fans went onto the pitch, ie Croke Park after finals. I am throwing this question out there, How many people were injured during those years of invasion?

Protection of the players I can buy but this Health & Safety stuff I am beginning to believe is a load of bureaucratic nonsense as was exemplified by the practically empty terraces in Newbridge for the Kildare v Mayo game, especially as so many supporters were denied an opportunity to see one of the better games of this year.

why should it be about what fans want anyway, it's about what players want.

Meath were the last fans to ever invade the pitch after a final. Leinster final 2010. Nobody will ever take that honour off us!

Whatever about finals, what I don't get is when fans walk (not run, literally walk) onto the pitch after provincial matches to go for a stroll around. Like, what's that all about?! Call me weird but after a match has ended I like to leave the grounds via the designated exits. I've never once thought "I know I need to get home but by jaysus I wouldn't mind getting onto the pitch for an ould stroll around".

It's been like that since 2010 , no one football or hurling are allowed into pitch, if you want to blame someone blame a FEW idiots from Louth who took it upon themselves to attack ref, Meath players and Meath supporters after Leinster final. It has never happened since and never will again.

well funnily,i have heard aaron gillane,jj delaney,damien hayes all saying in the last 24 hrs that they think the fans should be allowed on.
jj said that the highlight of winning an all-ireland was meeting your clubmates on the pitch afterwards.
h&s is used as an excuse for everything-why are people allowed on after matches in thurles?its the same pitch.

i think if you are allowed onto the pitch,you should completely waive your right to claim in the event of an accident.but so what if there is an accident,cant the insurance companies sort that one out?

Some Gaa fans can be very selfish at times players should be able to enjoy the a win without fans man handling them. when you are out on your feet the last thing you want is someone slapping you on the back i know all fans mean well but they are better of in the stand.

Look at what happened Louth vs Meath and the controversial goal another reason supporters should stay in the stand

Couldn't agree more, it's the players day and they can't enjoy it properly when there are 20,000 fans on the pitch. As things stand, they can enjoy properly, probably the greatest day of their lives, it's much better that way, and for those looking to bring it back, it ain't going to change.

I have been given out about that vile monstrosity - the plastic wall - behind the hill for years - this was a gross attack specifically on Dublin supporters no one else, and they took it lying down. But you must be blind for the last few years no one allowed on the pitch even subs warming up!

I know it's slightly different scenario but when we won the county championship for the first time in 20 odd years I would have been totally gutted if my club mates, family and friends couldn't have joined me on the pitch to celebrate.

it is more often for 1 of 2 reasons,to get to the car park quicker (across the pitch is often the quickest),but more often than not,it is to bring kids out for a puck around,or to get autographs,etc.
it is not a bad thing overall,these pitches dont get enough wear if you ask me!!

But who says players don't want it? Players love the sea of their county colours on the pitch too as they hoist the cup aloft.
Imagine how special it would have been had Declan Hannon hoisted the cup to a pitch full of green?

I have more issue with the flares that were being thrown around the hill than with an pitch invasions.

Seriously, I was on the hill and just before the national anthem a flare hit a young girl on the side of the head then bounced off and hit the lad beside me on the arm. It burned his arm and burnt singed the poor girls hair/head - seriously not on (and it was a maroon flare so I was mortified), but there were also green flare etc. so its not bias against any one team.

But on the other side of the coin, they then wouldn't have been able to perform a lap of honour, they wouldn't have been able to spend time on the pitch with their fellow players, friends, family etc, and instead as soon as they were presented with the cup, they would have had to fight their way back into the dressing room. As things stand Limerick players were able to spend as long as they wanted on the pitch afterwards, and enjoy properly the greatest day of their lives.

I suppose it is horses for courses gilly2308, maybe the supporters could give the players 10 minutes to maybe console the players, meet family, etc and then the fans are let on?
I could see why a player might not want the back slapped off him by thousands of people they have never met.

I remember on the stadium tour in 2001 you were allowed on the pitch, I remember seeing Down fans running around it. I have a photo of me in the old dug outs too as a young fellow.
