Snuf, with your knowledge of history i would hope your comment was tongue in cheek as I have to disagree with you there. Yes there is still some of the same old stuff goin on but as a 22 year old young professional I can say that the opportunities that I have are alot graeter than my father and grandfather had. How can you state taht nothing has changed, nationalist and republicans are now sitting side by side in stormont, talking about real issues such as education and watercharges, many with teh same agenda and all working for the interests of their voters. I can walk around Belfast city centre with a GAA Jersey on now, I can go to a bar with a Northren Irelnad match on one screen and a republic match on the other screen, with both sets of fans supporting their team and a bit of banter between them, yes the are still some bigots who try to ruin it all, but there is so much improvement. I can call 999 for teh police now without someone tell me, "call this man, he'll get it sorted quicker"......

I could go on and on, but i wont, but snuff wise up, alot has changed.

Dont get me wrong tho, its far from perfect yet, but its alot more balanced than 35 years ago

patrique County: Antrim Posts: 356 Nationalists hate the Republic of Ireland (Free State) more than Unionists. patrique - you speak for yourself there and not the Nationalist people. If you hate the ROI so much why are you on this IRISH GAELIC sport website. Go join the orange order if you hate irishness so much. And yes thats what it sounds like to me YOU ARE INSULTING IRISH PEOPLE AND THAT INCLUDES ME. Dont generalise again!!

North Side Gael, Paranoia throws me. "Does writing in the year book mean you have more right of an opinion". NO. It means you should recognise a wind up and satire, but obviously living in a bunker or whatever, that is not the case. As for the Stoop Down Low party I have absolutely no idea who you mean. Personally I have voted DUP, PUP, Alliance, Labour, Worker's Party and for Eamon McCann whenever he stands. At present I could be SWP, if that is the stoop down low people, so be it. Maybe it is a Belfast thing, confined to GAA supporters, but the term "Free State Ba####ds" is the most common expression going. Albeit said as a bit of a wind up, but still with a barb. I suspect they feel sold out, just as Unionists feel sold out by the English. Plus at GAA, boxing or anything else you will get robbed blind if you are from the North competing in an all Ireland competition. The songs at Windsor are not great, all these green and white scarves and flags and middle classes now means a totally different atmosphere. But they still hate England.

Just worked out who the Stoopers are, the SDLP. No I have never voted for them or Sinn Fein. I am extreme left, the 5 main parties are conservative, so most of my voting is practical and tactical.

Now I hope Kerry win on Sunday, for personal and economic reasons, but will not be heart broken if Tyrone spring a surprise.

And St Patrick was French, hence the Patrique.

As for Doc - tear you on ahead to windsor park, I'm sure your anti David Jeffrey manager remarks will be as welcome there as they are on this site regarding our esteemed manager of the decade.

Who says St Patrick was French? He was either Welsh or Cumbrian, or a Romano-Celt if you like.

If he was Cumbrian then he has much in common with Kerry, as names like Hayes and Hassett seem well grounded in the Lake District, which looks like a gathering of first cousins to our own Lakes of Killarney. I mention this because history is a complicated patchwork that defies easy interpretation. By the same token, one of the greatest gifts the English gave Ireland was the county system, as it continues to sublimate the impulse to squabble amongst ourselves.

Patrique, St Patrick was not French, he was born in a place called Calpornius which is actually believed to be Carlisle. We know this from his writings 'the confessio' and 'the epistola'

However there is a "two Patricks" theory in which a deacon named Paladius came from Gaul to Ireland and was sent by Pope Celestine, however due to St Patricks own writings this does not seem to be the St Patrick we celebrate on March 17th.

Whatever happened to the Holy Grail of "Parity of Esteem"? Does this mean you agree with me or else? Tyrone people setting an agenda for Andytown? Can't see it happening. We prefer to treat people as equals, we are not interested in oppressing anyone. We fought against it long enough, so it would be sad if we now wanted to oppress people.

All I did was advise why the flag had to be removed. Fact. And I reported on an attitude prevalent in West Belfast towards "Southerners". I did not say it was my attitude.

Many Northerners on this thread attacked poor Jayo/Cluxton (who sounds like a genuine laid back person whose company you would enjoy) and many another from the "South". Not me, because I am fairly laid back, but "Bean Soup" accuses me. I have no inferiority hang ups, no cause to vent spleen at "Southerners". Most of those posts alas came from Tyrone. Maybe becoming just a little bit "triumphalist" perhaps? Well just a few on here at any rate, I would hate to generalise.

You also mentioned nationalists. I confess I do not have a lot of time for nationalists. Margaret Thatcher? Hitler? No thanks.

I prefer to be Irish, no better no worse than anyone else. It does not make me super human or anything else, simply means I was born on an island called Ireland. Just like most of the members of the Orange Order.

I also do not have a lot of time for people who discovered they were Irish within the last ten years.

Must go now, Thursday is one of my Irish traditional music nights. Must admit I am a bit of a newcomer to this, only been playing since 1966.

Wait till Sunday night in Antrim Town. Probably be a load of Kerry polkas mind you.

To be honest, from a musical viewpoint, I hope Kerry win. You can get away with a polka. If Tyrone win, well I can play "Hills of Pomeroy" as an air, but no wants that. It has to be the dreaded "Pretty Little Girl from Omagh".

Now no one is going to dispute that this is categorically the worst song ever.
